  • Is it okay to use medical grade rubbing alcohol that's 10 months past its expiration date?

  • @HedgehogKnight

Your medical grade alcohol should still work just fine for this cleaning, even when past the expiration date by just ten months.

You only might not want to use it for medical purposes.

  • I got a 30001R ps2 back in jan 2002. In april of 2008 I was playing scarface and got the clicking noise and game would not load any farther. The clicking noise had started a few weeks earlier. I took it apart and that little white piece fasted to the laser which is a small gear that moves back and forth on the work gear to read the disc is what was wrong. It had little troughs wore in it allowing it to slip on the worm gear. I had a old parts ps2 which I robbed that piece out of and fixed it.

  • @matt78tv

    Good job.

Yeah, there will be parts that may wear out, such as that gear.

But, also, lack of lube on the rails can cause the same problem. It may also lead to an acceleration of the troughs being chewed into the teeth.

  • @Watcher3223 Can you help me about this?

So,i bought from a electronics store a blue 50003 PS2.After some times of using my slide card the tray would make a screeching noise.I opened it,then i seen when i close the tray, the optical drive(that with the lens and spindle),would not get up,and i would have to use my finger to push a little white thing to get it up,but if i open it back and close it,the same problem remains. What should i do?(the guarantee sticker was peeled off,as the PS2 was used)

  • @bacovia2004

If that "little white thing" is what I think it is, then it may be part of a larger white plastic piece that moves the drive up after the drawer is closed and down before the drawer opens.

This piece is mechanically triggered by the drawer. The white piece is supposed to have a protruding knob on top that rides in a groove underneath the drawer on the right side (PS2 facing you). I'm thinking it's possible that this knob has broken off from using the slide card for disc swapping.

  • @Watcher3223 My bad. There are two,one smaller that looks like this:(I) and the drawer. The problem is that the drawer does not move when i close the CD tray.

  • @bacovia2004

The only things I can ask would be:

    1. Is the mechanism in proper sync? With the drawer open, make sure that white post that sticks out a little from that white sliding gear that moves the drive up and down is in the groove underneath the drawer. If it's not, then the sliding gear may engage well before it's supposed to when the drawer moves.

    2. Is the belt still good? It's underneath a black plastic cover. You may need to remove the drawer to get to the cover and remove it.

  • @Watcher3223 That large one moves easily, and the little one that ensures the PS2 the tray is closed moves normally, and the belt was replaced. The problem is the drive that does not move up when i move the tray (that big one where you put the disk and reads SONY).

  • @bacovia2004

Are you able to provide video and pictures of what's going on?

  • @Watcher3223 It's no more to be worried. It works.I taken out the DVD plate.

  • Interesting music.

  • @ratchetandclankf

    Nothing wrong with classical music.

That said, the video had been taken down by YouTube due to DMCA as I had different music. I had to do a music swap to get the video back up.

  • @Watcher3223 I didn't say anything was bad about it. I said it was interesting. Big difference.

  • @ratchetandclankf

Usually the people that have asked me questions about the music choice were rather negative about it; my reply was an assumption borne from experience.

    My apologies.

  • yeah i did that but i fucked up the lense with the aircan it came out like liquid nitrogen when i pointed it down at the lense! why did it do that?

  • @The2Wiredproductions

Because the gas is in a liquid form when it is compressed and leaves the can as a liquid if it's ever released with the can upside down.

The liquid is cold because the liquid evaporates rapidly once it leaves the compressed confines of the can.

The instructions on the can will specifically warn never to spray when the can is upside down.

Unfortunately, I would definitely agree that the optics may be permanently damaged if exposed to the liquid.

  • @The2Wiredproductions I thought the can had to be just upside down not on it side like i had it well it just says what not to do. it dosnt show pictures of ways not to use it either well thanks for telling me why it did that.

  • @The2Wiredproductions

Using the can on its side can be doable so long as it's not full. The idea is to keep the liquid at the bottom while letting evaporated gas escape.

  • @Watcher3223 ok no wonder because i just bought it from the store today preparing for the project well great i am just have to go to ebay and get a new ps2.

  • @The2Wiredproductions

Sorry to hear of the loss. Good luck.

  • thanks man,,good video

  • I did it. The power ribbon is connected and the lights now work.

Also the circular scratches have stopped appearing.

I've been testing the ps2 with dvd game demos for a few weeks.

There's no more disc errors and games load automatically.

I'm waiting for a new memory ribbon and controller port. Memory cards weren't working.

Thank you for your help. Your responses were quick and the instructions were very clear and detailed.

  • @bannedtruth

    That's good to hear.

But what about the controller and memory card problem?

What happened to the old ribbon? When connecting the ribbon, is it connected in the right direction and the sockets locked down to secure the ribbon?

  • My new ps2 and ps1 memory cards are not recognised by the ps2.

Controllers work but in one ps1 game options were being scrolled through rapidly without input fom the controller.

I think i damaged the ends of the ribbon that goes in the controller port socket.

It looks fine but i was bending and pressing it frequently at first because it wouldn't lock.

  • @bannedtruth

Have you tried locking the socket after inserting the ribbon?

However, bending the ribbon can damage it as the flexing can sever the conductors.

  • When it tries to read a DVD it makes 3 click noises then this clank noise.

  • Can you make a video capturing this noise?

And, does the lens flash a bright red when you close the drive without a disc in it?

  • No I didn't touch that. I believe I have seen that white gear in other tutorials to adjust it for disc reading problems. They say to mark it with a marker then turn it to adjust the laser level.

  • @sephiro499

What does the PS2 do when you attempt to read DVD-ROM discs?

Can you provide a picture of the white gear? Sometimes, especially if the console had experienced mechanical shock, the notched leaf spring on the gear can slip underneath the gear instead of the notch being in the gear's teeth. When this happens, it throws the skew out of alignment.

  • @sephiro499

Another thing to try if nothing else works is to try tweaking the potentiometer for the DVD laser on the pickup.

If nothing else works, we've got nothing more to lose. Just remember; when adjusting the bias potentiometers, you only need to tweak it a VERY little bit.

  • @sephiro499

One more thing: with no disc in the drive, does the lens on the pickup ever flash a bright red?

  • I cleaned both. Can't remember if that thing was down ornot.

  • Check the radial skew (tilt adjust), which is the white gear.

Was this gear ever tweaked before cleaning and lubricating?

  • Well I managed to get that grease and peformed the operation. It'll read cds now but not dvds which I find strange.

I was thinking maybe I could buy a replacement laser on ebay but I an unsure what to buy.

  • Have you tried cleaning both the objective and fixed lenses?

  • And, if you moved the pickup back and forth, did you do that when the traverse was tiled down or when it was in its uppermost position?

I forgot to warn you about that; when moving the pickup back and forth when the traverse is tilted down, it is possible for the pickup's circuitry to be damaged, especially if the pickup is the KHS-400B.

The metal shielding below the drive could cut into and tear the pickup circuitry.

  • Can I use 3 in 1 oil on the metal parts because I'm disabled and it'll take me forever to get to sears to the get the grease. The grocery store has the 3 in 1 oil and i already have the alcohol and cotton swabs.

  • @sephiro499

3 in 1 may work on the sled bearing, but use it sparingly; you don't need to use much for it to work. A small dab ought to do it.

Place a small drip on the sled between the sleeve bearings on the pickup housing, then move the pickup back and forth to spread the oil.

The worm gear, however, requires grease. But, you may be able to get away without lubing the worm gear, though.

  • Is the scph-39001 the same as this model?

  • @sephiro499

Not exactly, but the differences are primarily the motherboard layout, though the 39001 may use the Sony KHS-400C pickup or the Sanyo pickup while the 30001 may use the Sony KHS-400B.

The 400B is slightly larger than the 400C. While many versions of the 30001 can use the 400C, the 39001 cannot use the 400B.

  • @sephiro499

But mechanically, disc drives on both models are similar.

There may be differences, but the cleaning and lubrication tutorial covering the 30001 can be applied to the 39001.

  • Oh and finally, the lights of the power and reset buttons don't come on.

    The power is still working.

I googled the problem but i only found problems about the power

    What have I damaged?

  • @bannedtruth

It's possible that the LEDs may not be illuminating due to a bad connection between the switch assembly and the mainboard (thinking of simple stuff first).

You can try to reseat the connection to see if that may correct the problem.

  • Ok. Could you help with another problem.

My Ps2 is version 3 and I can't find where the end of the power/reset ribbon attaches.

The ribbon is buried deep and i cant' find any entry to see where it ends It's much easier to find on later fat ps2's

  • @bannedtruth

The end of the cable attaches to a flat white socket on the right side of the board underneath the disc drive.

    watch?v=HdMgd0y3DIg

This tutorial, by "es540kickflip," may help you.

  • Thanks but I've seen that video and it doesn't help.

My console has a different layout. There's no visible white socket.

In that video it's just under the grey thing.

M ribbon is moving away towards the green board.

It' under the grey thing and a flat grey bendy board with celletope attached at the sides.

Along a black plastic board attached to the bottom of the top ps2 cover.

  • @bannedtruth

    May you please provide pictures?

  • Thank you for all this help. I've uploaded 9 images on image shack. They are in order starting from the cased ps2.

There are comments on image 7 and 8.

Youtube doesn't allow posting a website address without spaces.

So i've include the link on my youtube profile section under website.

If it doesn't appear here's the link.

    h t t p:// p r o f i l e. i m a g e s h a c k. u s / u s e r/ b a n n e d t r u t h/

Just remove the spaces. Sorry. Spaces appear after dashes.

  • @bannedtruth

On the motherboard, find a flat white socket that is empty. The socket should look similar to something like this:

    w w w . f r e e w e b s . c o m / a c e p c p s 2 x b o x u p g r a d e s / v 5 _ o r _ v 6 _ P S 2 . j p g

    (remove spaces)

The conductors on the ends of the ribbon must touch the contacts on the socket.

If the cable was completely removed, you will have to unmount the POWER and EJECT switch piece and find the socket and hook the ribbon.

  • Where is the motherboard? I can only see the power supply board.

  • For your PS2, the motherboard is underneath the power supply.

  • Is the motherboard the green boad shown in 5th images i uploaded?

If so is the socket at the back. Because it's not on the front,

I'm trying to remove the board but i can't. I've take out all the screws byt when i lift it the heatsink and power supply lifts too.

  • update. I think i've found the empty white socket. It's on a tiny circuit board between the heatsink below and the power supply above I don't think I can access it and attach the ribbon all the way to the power and reset button without completely disassembling the ps2.

  • You can try to use a pair of needlenose pliers or something similar that will allow you to grip the ribbon but is thin enough to get in there to insert the end into the socket.

Be careful when using pliers or tweezers on the ribbon; the ribbon is kind of fragile and can be torn or damaged if you're too rough.

  • @bannedtruth

As for why your posts may not appear immediately, I moderate posts on my videos; they aren't posted until I approve the comments.

  • I'm also trying to also install a new controller/memory card ribbon.

The problem is the current ribbon is very tightly attached to the socket. Other ribbons attached on the board are also really tight. I can't pull them out.

I'm trying to gently pull it out but it wont budge.

should i be pressing the socket in a particular way? It's very thin and looks fragile

  • Some ribbons, such as one that connects the controller ports to the motherboard, are locked into place using a locking lever.

You have to unlock it before pulling the cable out. You lock the lever to secure the connection so the ribbon stays in place.

For the controller, it's a flat plastic piece on the top of the socket that flips up to unlock and down to lock.

You must be careful when manipulating this piece, though; if it breaks, you may not be able to lock the connection into place.

  • Thanks, able to flip it up and down. Took the ribbon out without breaking anything.

Is it okay if the power ribbon touches the heatsink?

The white socket is just above the heatsink surface.

  • The heatsink shouldn't hurt the ribbon even when the system is warmed up, but try to figure out how the ribbon is supposed to be routed before putting it all back together.

Search for clues that can hint where the ribbon is supposed to go, such as any place where a white square sticker may have been used to secure the ribbon in place.

  • I'm having problem with a slim PS2. it's a 7004 I think. It can read PS1 and blue PS2 disks but it cannot read DVD or silver PS2 disks.

When I insert a PS2 disk into it it is stuck on "Reading Disk" and it's making a faint clicking sound. It doesn't produce "Disk Read Error"

I can get PS2 disks to work by putting in a blue disk, switching off the console, swapping with a silver then starting it back up. But that is becoming annoying now.

  • @viperxeon

Very weird that you can get a PS2 DVD-ROM to work by swapping it with a PS2 CD-ROM.

The only thing I can guess is that the pickup could be at fault (the slim PS2 laser pickups don't seem to be as robust as the fat PS2 laser pickups), but the fact that you can get it to work by swapping puts some doubt into this.

  • That's what I was thinking, I should consider opening it up and see if the pickup hasn't messed up or something.

  • Hi. My fat ps2 eventually scratches a big circular ring on DVD games. They fail to work after.

It doesn't do this to psone cd games.

Do you know the cause of the problem and how to fix it?

  • @bannedtruth

The only thing I can figure is that you may need to clean and lubricate the drive, particularly the spindle hub and the clamper cap to ensure that the grip between disc and clamper are secure enough to maintain stability at high rotation.

PSOne games may not scratch because they aren't read at speeds as fast as PS-2 games are.

  • That makes sense. I thought ps2 games spinned faster and that may be a problem, now it's confirmed. Thanks for responding so quickly.

Should I use the lubricants in part 2 of your video? And should I lubricate everywhere on the hub and cap?

Also my ps2 doesn't have a heatsink, like the big grey one in your video and ps2's in other videos.

What version does that mean it is? And is it a problem?

    It's SCPH-30003

  • @bannedtruth

Lube on the hub and cap should not be done; lube may only be needed on the slider that the pickup rides on and the kicker mechanism (and sparingly applied; too much will make a mess).

And, if your PS-2 is a older generation unit, the power supply may be on top while the heatsink would be on the bottom.

  • i just got a refurbished one that is a 30001 r lol

  • my ps2 could read all ps2 dvds that i had, but the first blue one (cd??) i used, it could not read that... so i cleaned the lens as per your instructions, now that blue cd started working fine, whereas all silver ones (dvds) that it could read before stopped reading.... any idea why all the dvd's can no longer be read ?

  • Are you sure you've put everything together properly?

Another thing, was cleaning the lens all you did?

If the lens, both the objective lens on top and the fixed lens underneath, were dirty, chances are the mechanical components, namely the kicker (or slider) mechanism requires service, too.

This is why the tutorial outlines cleaning and lubricating the drive. The dust can absorb the lubrication and can contribute to DRE malfunctions.

  • Hey. Thanks for the reply. Actually i got dvds + blue bottom CDs both working by caliberating a gear... the idea is that if dvds work fine but not the blue bottom CDs, then chances are that drive is good, it's not just calibrated. Anyway, thanks for sharing this, it helped a lot. I'm sure a time will come soon when i'll be lubricating all those comoponents... it's a used ps2 that i bought... :) ... take care man... i really appreciate it.

  • Would that gear be that white gear that adjusts tilt?

Usually, you're not supposed to alter any adjustments because they don't drift in normal use and changes in performance is more likely due to other kinds of failure; adjusting around the problem might work out or it may be nothing more than a short term fix.

In the case of the tilt adjust, it doesn't go out of whack unless someone tweaked it or if the PS-2 was dropped or hit hard. Misadjustment can cause the drive not to mount discs.

  • @carlthemaster

Are the buttons on the top case or on the console?

Newer models of the PS-2 have the switches on the console instead of the top case.

  • i hav fat ps2....

    da problem is..

it cannot play sum of new games...

its show "please insert ps2 disk" or just black screen after ps2 logos..

    LOL!!

    wat is happening??

does sumone noes??n how to solve it??

    help2...

    =.="

  • @cikai90

What kinds of games are you using that is causing this?

    Blue bottom or silver bottom?

  • bottom??

u mean the color below the disk??

most of all in like a yellow one...

    sum can play..and sum cant..

    its rili piss me off...

how am i suppose 2 do??

  • @cikai90

In other words, what kind of discs were they? Look at the bottom of a PlayStation 2 disc. If the disc has a blue bottom, it is a PS 2 CD-ROM. If it has a roughly silver bottom (could look a little greenish or a little yellowish in certain kinds of light), it is a PS-2 DVD-ROM.

As for some discs playing and some not, the drive is obviously working, which is a good sign.

You should try cleaning and lubricating the drive as outlined in the video.

  • emm...

    yeah...its like yellowish..

    clean the drive??

    orite!!

i'll tell u if i can solve it with dat way..

    byw..

    THANKZ A LOT!!

    :D

  • @cikai90

    Good luck.

And, remember, you need to follow the video to the letter.

  • sorry....

    typo..

    *btw

    lol~

    =.="

  • what those SwapMagic for?

  • Swap Magic is a boot disc that allows you to play copied or imported games on your PS-2.

The use of an opening tool or the use of a flip-top cover on a fat PS-2 or the use of an interlock defeat kit on a slim PS-2 may be required.

  • see my problem is the disc drive is opening really slow when i press eject, it'll go out for about 4 secs slowly, then go back b4 its all the wayout, i cleaned the long silver lever that the thing is screwed to and it went a bit longer, but it stil doesnt go all the way out...

  • Tried cleaning and lubricating the parts?

And, you might want to check the belt, which is underneath a black plastic shroud forward of the drive assembly.

  • ok the belt was the problem, it takes like 25 secs to load a disc now, but it still loads none the less so...

  • You may still want to clean and lube the drive according to the tutorial.

But, if games seem to load and play just fine, you might not need to do anything.

  • My Question: Wich u consider is the best choice between SCPH 39001 and 5001, I'll buy a PS2 and these are my 2 choices, I would apprecite the help, can u provide me info about each model? or just compare them? wich one overheats the most or wich is easiest to repair?

  • Whichever one is in the best working condition, otherwise the 50001 as it's newer (I have a tutorial for that model).

Overheating isn't a problem with either model unless there was something wrong already, such as excessive dust inside inhibiting airflow.

Disc drive design are both similar, though there are some differences between the two but nothing that really alters overall reliability.

The 50001 has a built-in IR port for the optional PS-2 DVD remote, so that's one thing that's cool.

  • hmmm...... i'm gonna test out but the shop's mall everywhere that are not public has H 1 N 1 so ill just have to wait

  • Started playing Bully... on my PS2.. started up... music played for 5 seconds and ended... and it sometimes freezes when i load...is that the disk or the disk drive

  • Depends.

How do other PS-2 games, both CD and DVD, play?

Plus, are there any scratches, smudges, and fingerprints on the disc in question?

  • i traded it in.. then got a new version of it... seems to work.. must just have been the disk

  • It happens, especially if the disc you had was bought used and had damage on it, though brand new discs can have defects as well (though this is not very likely, given Sony's excellent track record with DVD/CD manufacturing, though their US facilities had serious problems with LD manufacturing when LaserDiscs were still being made, but I digress).

  • I have a problem, but I think its the disk. The game will get to this certain part in the story and would complely do something weird, like the place that I'm in will just spin around in circles untill it freezes. If you have any suggestions, please tell me.

  • What game is it?

Plus, what is the condition of the disc? Does it have scratches and/or fingerprints?

  • The game is the secound disc of the four for the game "The Legend Of Dragoon". I don't see any fingerprints, but I do see two scratches. I think they might be the problem, and I'm considering trying to repair it myself [with info from people who do this, of course] or send it to a disc repair company, hell I'll send them all to see if anythings wrong with any of them, its only $3:50 for 1-5 discs.

  • I would probably recommend hiring the services of the disc repair company.

  • I found a new way to repair disks, all I need to buy is a cyrstal disk. Cyrstal disks are made to repair any sctatches or anything wrong on any type of disk, and they are only $8:00.

  • Excellent.

Please keep us posted on whether or not repair of the disc resolves your problem.

  • WHAT IS THE MUSIC??

  • 1st song: "Twilight" by the Electric Light Orchestra, a.k.a. ELO. This is from the "Time" album.

2nd song: "Mr. Roboto" by Styx from the album "Kilroy was Here."

  • Great tutorial, helped me fix my old-as-dirt PS2. Btw, what's the name of this song? It's epic :D

  • 1st song: "Twilight" by the Electric Light Orchestra, a.k.a. ELO. This is from the "Time" album.

2nd song: "Mr. Roboto" by Styx from the album "Kilroy was Here."

  • lol some time it works probably like a 9/50 chance but hey better then nothing

  • Well, with whatever you decide to do, good luck.

  • ok thanks for the info :D

  • Go ahead and try the fix. At this point, if your PS-2 isn't reading discs, you don't have much to lose.

  • the very first one that came out :3

  • If it's that old, it may need cleaning and lubrication or, worse case, a new laser pickup if it has seen a lot of use.

  • ok mine isnt like this but my says "reading disk" and then it blanks out what do i do ?!

  • What model is your PS-2?

  • Well, if you can fix your PS2 successfully, you can use that $50 for something else or buy another PS2 as a spare.

And, you lessen the environmental impact that throwing away a repairable console can have.

  • my scph 39001 laser keeps turning on and off about 5 times before finally reading the disc. the disc is a dvd movie. other disc formats work fine. its like'click, click, click, click, click, click and then two fast clicks before spinning and reading the disc as normal.

when i turn the ps2 on its side, it does not do that. it acts fine. why is this?

  • It may possibly be an alignment issue with what I believe is called the tangent skew (tilt adjust), but I don't see how that can be unless the console was dropped.

As for why it's doing this with DVD movies, it depends on the movie itself.

Most movies are released on RSDL (reverse spiral dual layer) DVDs, which are a bit harder for a DVD drive to read than single layer discs.

Most PS-2 DVD-ROM games are single layer DVDs, which are easier for the disc drive to read.

  • This is not to say that the PS-2 is not designed to read RSDL discs; conforming to the DVD standard, it *must* be able to reliably read RSDL DVDs. But if anything is substandard in the drive, this could be possible.

Another possibility could be that the optical pickup could be dirty or possibly even worn. This is particularly possible if the console has been used often, but you also indicate that the problem goes away when you position the console on its side, which negates this theory.

  • thank you for your answer but, sadly the ps2 just died. literally just a half hour ago. but thats okay b/c it is from gamestop and it has a warranty, so im gonna get my money back.

  • Okay. So this was a used machine. That may explain it.

    Good luck on the return.

  • lol thanks im gonna run it in this weekend

  • Can someone explain me why some of my games dont work while other work? For exemple, my new Midnight Club 3 doesnt work at all, and I bought 5 months ago! But my Devil May Cry (the first) works perfectly! Can someone tell me why? Im going to clean the lens...

  • There are reasons as to why this can happen.

First is that PS2 games can come in one of three different kinds of discs: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM SL (single layer), and DVD-ROM RSDL (reverse spiral dual layer).

The DVD-ROM formats do not require the drive to work as fast mechanically as CD-ROM to maintain high data throughput. In other words, blue bottom games sometimes make the disc drive work harder and if the drive isn't in good shape, it can skip a beat during loading.

  • "Devil May Cry," if memory serves me, is in a DVD-ROM SL disc. I'm not sure about "Midnight Club 3," but if that disc is a blue bottom instead of a silver bottom, it's CD-ROM and that can be the reason why. The fix is to clean and lubricate the kicker mechanism and the sled rails.

Another reason for some games working and others not can be how the data is laid on the disc and how the drive must access that data. Some discs are done to where the drive has to work harder to seek the data.

  • What I mean by "work harder" is that the drive may have to read data on one part of the disc and then it may have to move over to another part of the disc to read the data that may be there.

And, there can be variations on disc quality. One disc may not have been replicated as well as another, so the disc that is of lesser quality can cause problems on a disc drive that is having issues.

  • Ok...done, but the white gears in the traverse seem loose and grind, tray will not move in an out, PS2 is still apart, what do I do with the travers gears not moving in an out at all they just spin, an seem loose, it was that way before cleaning.

  • Did you check out part 2?

And, what part does the gear(s) drive?

  • Yes, the gears are white an move the white arm left an right, that has the white stud, that moves along the track on the underside of the tray, my pal is wanting to replace the whole assembly, he says its easier? wada you think?

  • they run the white arm that travels on the track on the underside of the tray.

  • Is the white peg running in a groove underneath and to the side of the tray?

If not, then that may be your problem.

The peg must run in this groove.

  • So if I use water or rubbing alcohol it does not make any difference , Is that right ?

  • Rubbing alcohol would be more effective in cleaning the lens, but water can work if you're in a pinch,

  • OK THX

  • i did this but i did this water and my ps2 works faster and better then ever before

  • Well, the important thing is cleaning the lens.

Water can work okay, so long as you make sure to polish the lenses clean after wiping with the wet swab to make sure there will be no residue left behind.

Anyway, I'm happy to hear that this helped out for you.

  • I need help. Whenever I turn on the PS2 and try to play a game, it takes me to the "Browser" screen. Everytime I try to put a disc inside it says "Reading Disc" For a second then it just dies. I need help!

  • Did you try to follow the repair video?

  • I hate it when that happens.

  • Hmm risk of serious injury or death from electrocution. Sounds risky, but worth it to get my PS2 to work. Besides if I die it's not like I had much to live for anyway.

  • Well, we live in a very litigious world, where you can't count on someone lacking common sense as a defense when he, or she, does something that is not safe, hence the disclaimer: to disclaim all liability and to remind those who want to attempt the repair that they do so at their own risk ... whatever that may be.

And, you shouldn't put yourself down like that.

BTW, nice background pic of Lina.

  • Relax I was just kidding.

  • Text has an interestingly difficult time communicating intent.

Maybe you should've used an emoticon, such as :-p to indicate that you were kidding instead of being serious.

  • Does the system work with other game discs?

  • hey i have guitar hero world tour and i just got it new and when i put it in the ps2 my ps2says disc eroor and i have went to alot of sites to help me fix it but they all involve taking it apart is there a way to fix this without taking my ps2 apart i really need some1s help

  • First thing I would do is to check if other games will work on your PS2. You may also want to check your "Guitar Hero" disc on another PS2.

You should entertain the possibility that you might have purchased a defective disc, which is unlikely but can and does happen from time to time. This is further reinforced if other games will work and is confirmed if the problem with the game persists on other known-working consoles.

  • But, if your PS2 does have a problem, I'm afraid that there is no other way around taking your console apart and performing service on the disc drive.

  • well my ps2 will play all my other games except that 1 i went to blockbuster and rented it and i got disc error the first time then i went back and traded it for another 1 and it did it again

  • Blockbuster, eh?

Renting games can be an arduous task because those discs pass through lots of hands, especially if the game is popular.

It is possible that the game you rented may have a good bit of scratches and damage and/or may be soiled with fingerprints and crap. Perhaps enough to make your console complain.

If there's any dust, dirt, and fingerprints, I'd try cleaning the disc first. If there's still a problem, the disc may be damaged.

I think your PS2 may be fine.

  • alright ill give it a shot but whats the deal if it dosent work thanks for the help my friend

  • Another possibility could be a weakening laser pickup. It is possible that, with the failing of the pickup, a handful of discs may begin not working and this can gradually get worse.

This largely depends on how heavily the machine is used, however. If used very often throughout its life, this possibility becomes more likely. But, if the machihne isn't used heavily, then this isn't as likely.

  • well i tested the game and i found that all my games that when i put them in they all speed up and start to play but the gh game will speed up for a sec and then stop any solution

  • Is the disc brand new or is it used or a rental?

I ask this because you did mention that the game came from Blockbuster.

And the games that do work, are they a mix of CD-ROM (blue bottom) and DVD-ROM (silver bottom)?

  • oh thats cool now can you get internet on ps2's?

  • Yes.

In fact, there are videos on YouTube demonstrating this.

  • I applaud you for this video. It's great to know there are at least a few people other than me that know of the fixed lens.

It's really unfortunate that so few people know of this because that is the biggest cause of a DRE and slow reading, along with dust on the objective lens. And yet people know about crap like adjusting the cog or voltages on the laser.

It's really a shame since most people trying to fix their ps2 never hear about the fixed lens and end up buying a new ps2.

  • If it didn't work for you, then the problem may require a new part.

And, I never claimed this procedure would fix every PS2, but it's something to try before spending money to replace parts, some of which can be expensive.

As for my question about what kind of noise, it's important to know what noise it's making as that can be a clue as to what's wrong.

It's part of what's called "troubleshooting", dumbass.

BTW, you're blocked from commenting on my videos because you're obviously a troll.

  • so you can get internet with that?

  • There are online sources for replacement pickups, including eBay.

  • Sorry. Thought you were someone else.

No, I don't get the internet with my PS-2. I don't have a wireless adapter for the wired ethernet connection and I don't feel like running a length of cable to hook it up that way.

And, I don't have the connectivity software anyways; I bought the adapter used for the specific reason of using a hard drive with my PS-2 with HDAdvance.

  • I have a newer playstation 2 the slimer ones. whenever i put a disk in it doesn't do a thing about it. i press X to go to the browser and all tht comes up are the memory cards. when i open up the tray and close it again nothing happens. it never says reading disk or disk read error or anything like that. how do i fix it. i am also out of warranty.

  • The slim PS-2 seems notorious for having laser pickups that fail. It is possible that the pickup may have failed and requires replacement.

However, before assuming that, you have to try to troubleshoot it first to confirm it.

One thing you can try is listen to the disc drive right after you close the door. Does the drive make any noises? Another is to bypass the safety interlock and see what the pickup itself does; does the lens bop up and down and possibly does a red light shine briefly?

  • cool what is that thing that u pulled out the back of it in the beginning

  • An optional hard disk controller/internet modem (phone/ehternet).

The slim PS2 has internet connectivity built-in but does not support a hard drive (or, at least, hard drive support is possible through the USB port and there are PS-2 HD utilities that allow the use of external USB drives).

  • I'm wondering if this will fix the problem my PS2 has been having. When I put a game in, and even when a game isn't in - right at start up - the playstation makes a clicking noise, - often times, games will start, but they will freeze, etc. The clicking noise sounds like the drive is stuck or something. It's hard to exactly describe, but it's rather load and quick - repeating as though the drive is stuck.

  • Very likely as a very rapid clicking noise (kind of like a buzzing noise) can be caused by a mechanical jam of the pickup kicker due to lack of lubrication.

However, this can also be caused by damage to the rack gear through wear and tear or through continued use of the PS-2 when it started to have the clicking problem to begin with.

Definitely follow the tutorial. If that doesn't stop the clicking, then you may need to replace the rack gear mounted on the optical pickup.

  • can i request another video from you?

i want to see your cogwheel..

cuz i having messed up with my cogwheel..

    if possible..

    a picture will be grateful

  • You'd have to basically readjust your cogwheel for the tilt adjust for the traverse skew and that will have to be done from scratch to get a precise adjustment.

But, if you want a picture, there is one 31 seconds into the video, which shows the metal notch in the cog just a few teeth away from the drilled hole.

  • does this thing make my ps2 to fix and read ps2 games?

well i mean, my ps2 only reads PS1 games.. doesn't read PS2 games

all i have to do is cleaning the lens?

  • It depends on why your PS-2 isn't reading your PS-2 games.

And, it's not just cleaning the lens but also lubricating certain mechanical parts.

  • It should. But, if it's having problems reading PS-1 discs, it could also have problems reading PS-2 CD-ROM discs (blue bottom).

Does it have problems reading PS-2 CD-ROM discs on top of the PS-1 problems? And, are you having a problem with a wide variety of discs or just one or more specific titles?

Another thing to ask: was your PS-2 ever dropped?

  • No. Why would there be?
