For example if your great, great, great, great grandfather moved to the US but had only married people of Irish decent and so had both sides of your family you would be 100% Irish decent. However if you dad came straight from Ireland but married a women who's decent was Italian then you would be half Irish. when they got to the US is irrelevant.
