History sees the age of consent in a context of making ones' first independent choice. in medieval times we have two indicators for when society deemed a person fit for such a choice, the first was canon law wich deemed 12 years to be the earliest viable age for marriage the second coincidently was close to that and marked the end of going to school (sundayschool) and start of learnign a trait. with growing populationdensity and declining need for workforce that age went up and up

@holdontoyourwig Please clarify what you consider as liberal? It seems everyone has their own definition of it. As far as other nations that have already accepted homosexuality marriage equality if you will do not have negative effects. Just like there isn't before they were allowed to lawfully marry. Nothing has changed. Gays have been living as a couple as if they were married since pretty much always. A piece of paper granting it and marriage commitment is the same thing.

@splicedenergy Its impossible to define liberalism. Its has a different meaning from person to person. You might want the legalisation of all drugs for example. You may only want the legalisation of marijuana. Both are seen as liberal thoughts. I guess anything that is not legal being made legal could be described as a liberal move. At some stage you will say....STOP!! Enough is enough. Thats a step too far. If thats the case then you're not as liberal as the next person who wants that next step

There are prosecutions of those who are slightly over the age of consent , but it depends on who the Defendant is. Also, individuals who are intended to be protected by a law cannot be prosecuted under that law.

@JeremyAdshade Shes parroting an argument put forward by another republican that "C02 is plant food, and therefore carbon emissions are just dandy". Again, the premise is correct, plants do use C02, but that doesn't mean its not apocalypticly harmful to pump as much into the atmosphere as we do. There is no getting around the fact they're being intentionally deceitful or just plain stupid.

In Texas its legal for two 14 year olds to go at it, but no two individuals with more then a 3 year difference of age (and under 18) are allowed to. I'm pretty sure thats more or less how the law works in all places, am I wrong?

@JoesephKatana Dead wrong. Go to the Wiki, it's very accurate and then think about the repercusions. And then look at the differences in conviction rates and sentencing for men and women who commit the crimes. Then, look at the govt figures for the divorce rate and which gender gets the overwhelming amount of money from which gender. After all of that, I've a few websites and books you might be interested in.

@JoesephKatana No, it doesn't match what you said at all. The minimum age varies from 14 to 18. Some states have Romeo and Juliet laws and others don't. Some states have gap spans that bridge adults and minors if they're inside the gaps, some don't. You took a cursory glance and didn't actually read it. If you had, then you wouldn't have self confirmed. Whatever, it's your mind.

I wasn't suggesting everyones minimum ages were as low as Texas's, I was just challanging the misconception that its flat out illegal below the "free for all" age. I've looked at about 10 states laws, and 5 have something similar to Texas's laws. Bored with it now.

Age restrictions for anything are ridiculous, baseless, and arbitrary. Look here: a 18 year old can star in a 45 person gangbang for money, but they can't drink a beer.

It is always and only about consent. Tell me of anyone who didn't make mistakes and embarrass themselves in romance. lol. There are certainly issues with manipulation, but age restrictions don't change that, at all. But they DO stop young people from letting others know what and who they are doing. Secrets are dangerous.

When I was at school I knew of a 17 year old dating a 13 year old. I don't think the 20 year old deserves to be charged alongside child molesters.

One has to take in to account that people do age at different rates. In fact, right here on youtube there used to be a very mature (physically) 13 year old dating a 19 year old.
