There's an eerie quality to the lyrics if you think about it. Jack Wild has passed away but he had a pretty active life from what I understand.
If you go through life just going through the motions, what difference is it if you die? You didn't live to begin with so you're really just following the rules and dying because you're supposed to.
Just something I thought about now that I read the actual lyrics to this.
@NateSean I actually sat through every episode and most of it was a dirge (Well I'm an adult) but I came across this gem of a song. I agree the lyrics and the melody are crushing and it's even more so strange because it's in a surrealistic kids' show.
He never feels anything, always obeying orders, he is a machine. But his life has no meaning. To be "real" is to feel joy and sorrow. Of course this has no meaning in the context of the show, but that's what it means when you read the lyrics.
