You fanboys are some of the most ridiculous I've seen.
I absolutely love and adore Martin Lopez, in fact he's my second favorite drummer of all time (behind Gavin Harrison). But dear god, Axenrot has done one album with Opeth so far. ONE! And you all think you're fit to judge his entire future career off of it.
Even so, Burden, Porcelain Heart, Hessian Peel and Hex Omega had some amazing groove and fills to them.
Will he ever replace Lopez? No. Will he create something new and amazing? Yes
for me i got nothing much to say abt him, as my nickname shows wat he means to me.... i love da way he approaches da music... its very sad dat he had to leave opeth on a drummer as shitty as axe.... no off.... bt i guess dats da truth..
i think that axe is a better drummer technically, but no one can replicate lopez's feel which makes him unique (although he is nearly perfect technically)
It may appear glamorous, but being at that level of where Martin Lopez got to, basically got to him in a bad way. My man was burnt out and clearly wasn't feeling it anymore. Period.
He looks soooo pained for some reason... dude had some problems, why i don't understand, but still he will be missed. Axe is a great guy and one hell of a drummer. Also, to say that Axe's drumming isn't as exotic or organic as Lopez, you are wrong, its not the same sound, it's just different. Definitely more metal but also sounds from a different region.
He can but it just feels more robotic and a lot less organic. He can hit the notes but he lacks the feel and emotion that you got from Lopez's drumming. Axe is and always will be better at death metal drumming than he is at the latin/jazz groove that Martin Lopez had.
i think they will still be great, just in different ways. but sadly, i think martin lopez fit the Opeth that i fell in love with better than axenrot. but With axenrot, they're still my favorite band definately, just in a different way
So far I prefer Lopez over Axe but both are good. I think Axe will grow with the task though, give him another album or two and I predict great things. Lopez evolved a lot during his years with Opeth too.
Anyway, that's just my take on it. No need to worry, just relax and see where they're going with this.
I like your words, they put me at ease. Cos I'd hate opeth to go downhill . But theres alot of logic with what your saying. The last two albums opeth did with Lopez are still music to my ears (literally) hahaha but the drumming is a BIG influencing factor on what I listen to :)
Completely agreed. However, he might add a different touch to the music, and I'm sure it will still rock since it's Mikael that writes the music. I'll miss him dearly though :(
martin said himself (in documentary from) that he writes 95% of drums for opeth. mikael writes 95% of music but drums it just martin. and he is true genius in it
perfect duo: mendez and lopez :)

Anyone who thinks axenrot is better than lopez, be it technically and/or as a fit for opeth, isn't really a fan of opeth at all.

Axe has the touch of a shoemaker, i almost can't stand the way he plays tracks from Damnation...

Let's not make any comparsions. This video is about the drum virtuoso Lopez, so let's just big him up as he deserves.

Axe and Lopez are both AMAZING drummers. They just have different styles. I prefer Axe, but I can well understand why people like Lopez.

It's easy to immitate somebody - Axe played Lopez's lines on RT. But he won't come up with such great drum parts himself on the new record.

He was perfect for opeth, his latin jazz touch was just what they need. I feel like Martin Axenrot won't be able to create such nice drumtracks
