Shoe for protection when needed. Surely people know the difference? We as humans can walk without shoes also, but try it on gravel sometime. But humans who walk daily in bare feet have tougher feet than me and could walk on rocks unlike me an office worker. I believe same holds true in horses; those in the wild have tougher hooves than those in captivity. We shoe horses for protection when required. It is not "natural" for a horse hoof to be picked, filed and trimmed either ya know.
I totally agree with semtech30. The problem is not the horseshoes, its the unskilled people that are trying to apply them. If horseowners will seek out SKILLED farriers then they will not have all the problems that the barefooters are always talking about.
Like i tell everyone when i go to shoe. If your not gonna ride on anything too rough you can ride barefoot. only the really really sensitive ones at my house get shod.
Excellent job of promoting natural hoof care. So many owners think barefoot horses can't actually be used. Those of us who trail ride on barefoot horse know that's just not true.
Whats really natural to a horse is barefoot with a bareback.
When you add the weight of tack and rider you are inflicting a condition apon them. You stear them on a trail of your choice not theirs and at a pace you want
not them. And to mention when they do feel that stone bruise it's their pain not yours.
Now, arent you maybe just thinking of yourself ??
I was taught that to work a barefoot horse was inhumane and cruel.
Hi Ben - you did a fantastic job with the video, thank you for all the time and effort! Great article in Trail Rider too, I'll look forward to reading more from you in the future.
