  • You are amazing for posting this! And thank you for the tip on the dvd. :)

  • The dot was a sl*t.

  • @rachel8375 she wasn"t a slut she was just picky. she didn't really know what she wanted she just wanted to be wanted.

  • I always thought the message of this movie was that you probably want the guy whose entire body is not erectile dysfunction.

  • I've always wanted a line of my own. Still haven't found one.

  • 01:57 He's so gay.. Sure, that's why she dumped him.

  • Just heard Norton Juster speak at a book conference (he's the author of the original book, as well as The Phantom Tollbooth). Great guy. Funny, had lots to say. Thanks for posting this.

  • ah the short that won Mr. Chuck Jones an Oscar...and how did he deserve it all.

  • I love this short!

  • I read the book and I loved it.

I watched the short and I am ENAMORED by it.

  • even when i was a young, i loved the way he said "profound" at 7:50

  • The subtitle should have been "A Lesson On Adjectives". So many! XD

  • "Hot stuff!" XD

  • Next time i need to insult someone i'm going to tell them that they are meaningless as a melon lol

  • Eh I love the story, but Mrcreepypasta reads it better

  • MEMORIES!!!! MAN, did I LOVE this cartoon as a kid in the 70's/80's. THANKS 4 posting this!!

  • LMAO @ "To the vector belong the spoils." XD

  • @golddemona well done! I have been searching for this! had an impact on me as a child. Great sentiment to this.

  • Those other lines are right to say that the dot wasn't good enough for him.

    He really deserved better. =(

  • This was one of my favorite ones

  • that was fun

  • Hot Stuff.

  • Anyone else think of a Kotex commercial while watching this?

  • People these days are too obsessed with squiggles! We need another Jones, we need more lines!

  • i don´t really like the dot that much, who´s with me?

  • my that i love the most, texts me and says: "so past the line.. and now the line is a dot to me. i just don't know what you think, or what you want"

and i replied, saying that i didn't understand the metaphor, and she won't tell me:/

can anyone tell me? is it good or bad? maybe you understand it better than i do :/

  • @DakkiFTW its bad. I am not going to squash you because of your youth.

  • Well, that wasn't half bad!

My school, Rock Island High, is doing a marching band show based on this cartoon.

Now, all of a sudden, I don't think it was such a bad idea after all!

  • What a cartoon.

  • How wonderfully minimalist.

  • As a kid I used to like the Dot better. Now I much prefer the Line, and occasionally lament my loss of innocence.

  • Stupid dot bitch. What the hell can she do?......women are just so special.

  • @PNHassett in nature women dont really do anything the guys are all the ones who do stuff to impress them, trust me its cruel when other girls end up going for thw wrong guy for stupid reasons when someone who loves them can do right by them

  • @kalvinknuckles97 Well, I think I'm allowed to be mad at the dot bitch for berating and demeaning the 'line' the first 2 minutes of the video. She probably has a cluster B personality disorder. Guys think crazy bitches are hot for some reason.

  • Dot: A girl who wants to have a good time.

Line: A shy boy who has many hidden talents.

Squiggle: Some guy who is all style and no substance.

  • One of my favorite cartoons! Maybe someone out there can help me find a film whose name escapes me. I'll try to describe it the best I can. Some of the scenes include:

-A group of people who are crossing a city street suddenly do jumping jacks.

-A pingpong ball that just came out of a factory comes to life and bounces all over the city.

-It was made sometime in the late 60's or early 70's.

Don't think I'm crazy! I'm describing it the best I can! Any info is appreciated!

  • @dgwaters sounds a bit like Why Man Creates (1968) by Saul Bass. I've never managed to find a copy that wasn't in excess of £100 though.

  • @MattOxborrow YES! THANK YOU! That's it!

  • I haven't seen this cartoon in years; I'm so glad I found it again!

  • Sooo romantic... :' )

  • This is delightful! : )

  • I love these children stories

  • What a great animation. I remember watching this when I was like seven and when Cartoon Network was just first starting. Such fond memories.

  • hahahaha to the "vector" belong the spoils, thats good stuff. I remember watching this as a kid too, I think it was my favorite out of all the animated pieces.

  • 1:59 .- "he is so gay and please so i mean forbiden and full o joy" haha

  • @elmrflow you need to listen a lot more closely> The line is "he is so gay and free so uninhibited and full of joy" What the hell were you listening to?

  • thanks...I was actually looking for this... :P

  • ...Freedom is not a license for chaos...:)

  • So clever! Definitely one of my fave short movies :)

  • This cartoon seems best suited for shy teenagers trying to win a girl. But why would you want a girl like dot anyway? She's just goes where the money is.

  • Most girls do.......

If you had a choice between two people that seem to have the same feelings about you...

    who would you choose?

  • Whichever had more lasting value. If you want to talk about money, that's where it is, lasting value, not an immediate appearance of value.

If you're really greedy like me, you don't go for immediate benefits, you wait for the good stuff.

  • Touche.

  • ohhh....I remember watching this back when I was a kid... :D

  • so is the story of vaggo and ponos?

  • Go gledav klipov deka mi go preporaca profesorkata po matematika ne za drugo. Dzabe istroseni 10 minuti :)

  • However...is it better than another one of his classic cartoons, Duck Amuck, or For Scent-Imental Reasons (Oscar in 1949)?

  • FYI: "The Dot And The Line" is another one of Chuck Jones' masterpieces. Released as a theatrical animated short for MGM in 1965,it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. For those who don't understand mathematics, this cartoon is a dazzling display of sheer genius courtesy of Chuck Jones.

  • But it was written by Norton Juster first.

  • egadz!!!! i love this!!!!

  • this reminds me of me and my friend]: </3

  • I haven't seen this cartoon in ages. I first saw it on a projector in kindergarden during art class. Still fun after all these years.

  • "and made an angle" hahaha

  • lol @ "to the vector go the spoils"

  • 6:16 -- The correct pluralization for "rhombus" is "rhombi", not "rhomboise" (or whatever he said). 8-}

  • He said "rhomboids", which is a word I think.

  • It is indeed a word -- A "rhomboid" is parallelogram in which adjacent sides are of different lengths. A "rhombus" is one where the sides are all the same length.

Now, about this film. First time I saw it was in elementary school in class. I didn't connect the name Chuck Jones with the Roadrunner or any of the other animation he had done, but I always liked this film. (I considered myself a 'line' then. And when the moral came up, I LOL -- I love puns. Math and vocab -- a great combo.

  • Norton Juster was a genius.

  • I haven't seen this in years. Something made me think of it today and here it is! Thanks for the memories.

  • lol my maths teacher recomended this video to me

cant see much "maths" in it though -_-

Still this is actually quite a good cartoon :D

  • "Freedom is not a licence for chaos"

Math may seem dull, dreadfully structured and predictable, a random colection of rules. But from these simple rules we can derive beautyful and complex things that make sense and have presence and meaning

Or maybe some math mayor was tired of messy hippy musicians getting all the free love

  • hmm, you're words are inspiring, in a strange but clever way, and anyway I didn't say maths was "dull", some of it is quite cool, they say maths is used in everyday life, which is true in a way

also you miss spelled "beautiful", I like English too :D

  • YAY Im from Argentina, so im doing PRETTY WELL ON THE ENGLISH THING kthxbye

anyway, i didnt mean to imply you thought that way =)

  • You are indeed! Bravo!

  • @Ogaitnas900 great quote! I remember seeing this cartoon at my grandparents house in the 70's. I am currently 41. It is an emotional thing to see this again. I have looked several times over the years because it burned such a strong impression onto me. Thanks for posting, whoever you are. Greatly appreciated. This cartoon, shown sometimes as 1/3 of the Tom and Jerry show had an impact on me that I can't explain. Even as a child. Themes today are from this. Impressionable kids i guess!

  • ....and picked his ear.

  • I fuckin LOVE this cartoon

  • lol LOVE this cartoon! "you're as meaningless as a melon!"

  • I remember the first time I made an angle.

And another and another and another...

    The double entendres are amazing.

This is one of the greatest things we have ever seen.

  • we saw this in geometry class today.......yup

  • I suppose it is true, what they say.

    "Nice lines finish last."

And the dot's a fickle bitch.

  • why is the Dot such a big fucking deal. the line and the squiggle should lose that big fat dead weight, go get a beer and forget about that bitch.

  • Lol that's hilarious the dot has to be a fat chick.

  • i know, right? i'm not really this bitter i swear. power to the size acceptance community!!!

  • I have been searching for this cartoon, I saw it once when I was very young, 40 years ago, and it made a big impression on me. Thank you!

  • I'm kinda like the line myself. I have quite the sum of dots I've had crushes on.

  • well the dot wasnt straight

  • SirHenry39, good pun!

  • Clearly, the red dot represents that she's on her period. Despite the dot being a complete bitch, I liked this cartoon.

  • completely and utterly brilliant!!!! :-D

  • i saw this at school but i dident get to see well but this is kind awsome to see is with my own eyes with no ppl in front of me cause i am really short o.o

  • quantum squigle

  • This is my favorite book. I'm glad I finally got to see the movie!

  • The life of a line is much more complicated than it's constant slope makes it seem.

  • Brilliant!

  • All the dots i ever loved hated me for being a line now they live with their squiggles and only call me when they need money.

  • hopefully you will get your dot

    perhaps I will too..

  • Rostiejay, lol that's funny! I never thought of it that way because I grew up on this cartoon.

  • one more reason why i love chuck jones!

this won the academy award in 1966 i believe too!

  • I understand it but it would be great if someone upload the spanish version. love this story, it is deepper than the most of us think. it not only talks about "nice guy/bad boy" thing,it reveals the esence of live. woaaaaaaaaa. wonderful.

  • I love the dot and the line. The line is so charming! The Dot is a young fun immature beauty. The squiggle is a mess and completely like most people. Uncontroled, unthoughtful and insignificant.

The line would do anything for the dot, and learns that in loving her, he can find the best parts of himself. I love this story.

  • Only Chuck Jones can make me love a line and a dot so much.

  • lol yep

  • it all makes sense know

  • I cant help but think this is a suitable allegory to what is known the "nice guy/badboy" sydrome. And what the "nice guy" type can do about it (break out of your mould, learn how to alter yourself to bring out your best qualities, learn how to be fun, to charm and intrigue her etc...) Any "seduction" type seminars should play this cartoon as intermission.

  • Nice

  • It seems that the real moral of the story is to turn your back on your friends as soon as you find someone who has even more than they. I'm not sure what charm this video holds.

  • minimalysm rules!!

  • so does a diksionary ;)

  • thats a response to someone on page four who said "minimalysm rules!" - no offence :D

    -

' 'aint life a doozy when you got a brand new carrot to play with'

    -

  • so does a diksionary ;)

    -

'bugs are only scary when they're eight feet tall'

    -

  • Oh man, a masterpiece of animation.

My thanks and compliments for uploading it!

It's a shame CN never airs such shows anymore.

  • This is an ALL TIME favorite of mine! So glad to see it again!

(it's finally on dvd now too, btw)

  • Thanks. Been looking for this for a while.

  • Thanks for posting this. The last time I saw this was almost thirty years ago. What a treat to see it again.

  • ang ganda naman nito talaga.

    naluha ako. bravo chuck jones!!!!

  • This cartoon brings back memories!!!

  • *wipes a tear* that poor squiggle!!!I guess he did that to himself though.

What's the moral of the story? Apperances can be deceiving? Is it deeper then that?

Chuck Jones is one of my favorite animators

  • The moral is "To the vector goes the spoils."

  • Beautifull. And I love the voice of Robert Morley as narrator

  • wow

  • Heybigkit posted a much cleaner verion as a video response. I have no idea where he found it but I think everyone should check out the way it was meant to be viewed (without fuzzy lines.)

  • @tanavin Thanks, you're totally right.

  • a very sweet story~ thanks for posting it!

  • always was my favorite cartoon besides what's opera doc? Chuck Jones is truly the master of hand drawn animation. No wonder it got the Oscar. He's way up there with disney. Indubitably. I think Jones is funnier though.

  • I too have been on a perpetual odessey in search of a tameable scibble. you have warmed my heart, and made my toes tingle. THANK YOU!

  • YAY!!! Thank you so much! I have been looking for this one forever! It's my favorite non-character cartoons.

  • It's simple but amazing! One of Chuck Jones best!

  • Awesome!!!! Thanks Tanavin!! You Rule!

  • Holy shiiit the last time I saw this I was 5 or so!

  • I've been looking for this Chuck Jones classic for nearly a decade. Thanks to YouTube, I'm finally able to see this wonder of animation culture.

  • Bravo for the post! This is one of the best and most innovative shorts Chuck Jones ever produced.

  • You have made my love's whole year with this. We have searched hell and back... and there it is. What else do you have up your sleeve??? Cheers!

  • This is wonderful ... I have been looking for this short for ages .. Thank you tanavin ... I love this site !!!!
