If a Phillies fan goes to NY flaunting his jersey, he'll get insulted. ITS THE SAME EVERYWHERE! People are so dumb. Philly IS NOT dirty or absurdly rude. We're passionate about sports but not everyone is a dick. Every fan base has a few assholes. Not just Philly. And if you don't agree, sit on a plunger.
Silly silly move by Shelley.... Malice may not have been intended but that is never the thing in question here. You don't ever hit a player from a behind in that situation... especially a cross check with arms extended for what is going to be an icing. Bonehead move by Shelley. He will be getting his ass beat the next time these 2 meet. Hands down.
@rustyp7 HAHAHAHAHA please. What about Chicago i think it was, could be wrong, throwing beer on Victorino... Or even the glorified New York bad mouthing Cliff Lee's wife so bad that he thought second about signing for the Yankees. Yea because Philadelphia is the only one that does anything wrong. Plenty of other cities have their moments. Way to be narrow minded.
@Theawski I was refering more to the fact that Philadelphia it's self is a scumbag town, not just the sports fans. You are correct though; Chicago and New York do have some bad fans that poorly represent their towns, but Philadelphia it's self is a nasty, dirty town full of scum. Not all citizens of Phily are bad people of course. You can find decent people everywhere. Hell, even Nazi Germany had it's fair share of good people
@rustyp7 HA I'd love to know where you live. You probably live no where near philly and have barely ever been there. You're probably one of those Crosby Penguins fanboys. The fact that you spout trash from your mouth with no back up shows how narrow minded you are.
@Theawski Damn, you're good. I am a Pens fan and I have only been to Phily once (thats all it takes to know how much of a trashy town it is). I was born and raised in western PA and now live in Alaska.
Goon punk. 2 games is a joke. The asshole shaking his head like he did nothing wrong. He fits perfectly into the Flyers team. Shelley should be off two months without pay, not 2 frickin days.
Anyone says Jody is not a dirty player ... what are you thinking ? *This* was a dirty play, period. Making excuses for Shelley only encourages other "nice" guys like him to do the same thing elsewhere. We don't need to know if he had "malice in his heart"... Christ, this was on an *icing* !
@4albo how do you know he was shaking his head because he didnt like that call? he probably was shaking his head due to the fact that incident happened not that he was acting like he didnt nothing wrong.. shelley waiting for McQauid after the game and shelly apologized and said "i didnt mean to" for all we know he could of hit the Rut while attempting to gently shove him ..
@Cripsta896 You could be right as far as the head shaking is concerned. But I've seen him in person for many years before Philli, and he's not such a bad skater that he didn't know what he was doing there. "intent to injure"? tough to say of course, but a chimp he basically finished the check into the boards, from behind. He's an NHL'er, for gosh sakes, and he's no victim of a bad call...
Anyway, I just think you're wildly kind to him to make up that "Rut" excuse...:)
@4albo well ruts are pretty annoying lol .i was at the rink with my buddy and i went over a rut while we went to the corner and it was when i was about to stop and i went flying lol along with my buddy lol but ruts or no ruts its all about the safety of the players .
Jody apologized on the ice and also waited for Adam in the hallway and apologized to him again. I watched Jody for a couple years in San Jose, and he is NOT a dirty player - this was just a mistake of judgment. He hasn't been suspended in SIX YEARS, so anyone calling him a dirty player doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. That said, two game suspension is reasonable.
@skr213 Okay, you don't want to call him a dirty player. But this was a dirty play. If a guy murders just once, I guess he's not a murderer ? I'm not suggesting we end Jody's career, but he needs a good dose of penalty here, and I just thought, looking at this one incident, that 2 days is an incentive for others with Jody's role in the NHL to do the same thing. 2 days is only a minor embarrassment. That he said he was sorry to the guy looks a bit like foxhole conversion to me...
@4albo the murderer thing is a terrible analogy..ever hear of involuntary manslaughter...he was apologizing as soon as it happened to me that clearly shows it was an accident and a 2 game suspension is an accurate punishment, if it was clear that he intended to injure then there should be a much larger suspension
@zuse13 Okay, zuse, you got me. I'll go with involuntary manslaughter ! 2-game suspension for involuntary manslaughter.... maybe i was a bit over the top... 'Sure this doesn't count as a hate crime also ?...:)
Funny...I remember watching him when he played for the Johnstown Chiefs in the ECHL. One game, he was escorted off the ice by a linesman and as soon as the linesman turned around on the ice, Jody rushed the ice again, shoved a ref out of the way and commenced to fight again. I think he got a 6 or 8 game suspension for that one. I am a huge Flyers fan (I have a spare room dedicated to them) but I have to say, that was uncalled for. Crosschecking on an iced puck???
@dann203 He also didn't apologize on national tv. He did it to his face after the game as Mcquaid was leaving the ice. That is not what a man does if he meant to do it.
@4albo Please a face to face apology has nothing to do with how long he gets. He didn't do it for the crowds. Two words is not the difference between a big suspension and getting off with a slap on the wrists if he meant to do it on purpose.
@Theawski You're completely wrong there. Showing immediate remorse shows that you're not a complete savage. Take Jesse Boulerice for example. The Flyers knew he was a headcase and got rid of him. Hasn't gotten a sniff in the NHL since.
Yes but he was trying to cut around McQuaid to get to the puck. Mcquaid stopped and caught an edge causing them both to fall. Quoting someone else on from a different board because i couldn't have said it better "he had no right to even put his hands on McQuaid no matter how hard he pushed him. he should have gotten suspended and he did but only for 2 games since it was clearly NOT an intent to injure." Basically he didn't do it on purpose to harm him.
Look shelley is 225-30 pounds. To say the least he is a big guy and can't stop on a dime. McQuaid stopped short and took an edge with pressure from shelley behind him. It looks bad and probably he deserved the penalties he got. If you really think he meant to hurt the guy don't you think it would have been worse and he would have stayed on his skates. He apologized to the guy too. Calling him a classless cheat is a little much for a guy that apologizes.
@Theawski you're saying a player in the NHL, someone whose probably skating for the majority of his life, wasn't capable of making a full stop before reaching the boards? You see it every game, people gunning for the boards and being able to pin their opponent on the boards without harming them. If a big man like Komisarek can prevent himself from doing it, so can Shelley. And of course he's going to apologize, which idiot on national tv wouldn't show remorse
Classless. I am glad I am not a flyers fan otherwise I would have to chose a new team, or be faced with acting like a dickhead defending they behavior of morons like pronger, carcillo and shelley. It is hard to believe they let Steve Downie go, he seemed to have tremendous potential with that 20 game suspension.
I wish they'd have suspended him longer than 2 games. Not necessarily because he deserved it, but because the Flyers deserve a higher skilled player skating in his roster spot!
@jeepwrang3 First off that was Brickley, not Edwards, and he said he WAS going to give Shelley the benefit of the doubt at first, but once he saw the replay it was clear that it was intentional, watch the video next time.
if shelley woulda meant to do it, it would have been A LOT worse. mcquaid's head was fine, said he just got the wind knocked out of him, understandable. we'll see what the nhl says.
A Flyers player involved ! What a shocker ! If they really wanted to banned this kind of hit of the game, they dont need to change the rules, just banned the Flyers franchise and u'll get rid of 90% of the this crap.
Agree when they put this uniform they begins to cheapshot more. look briere always slashing and even giroux is becmoing to thros slash all around the ice. they are a team that try to trahs talk and hurt you.. You got to be blind to think it was an accident. he did not loose an edge. he just cheapshot him and thenn says asorry like a baby. it was well intent. its the lfyers way of playing
Shelley didn't do it on purpose, they both lost an edge, and while it is very unfortunate, there was no intent to injure. I agree that the game misconduct and boarding were appropriate, but Shelley is not a dirty player. He apologized to McQuaid on the ice, and in the tunnel. McQuaid even said he wasn't injured, that he had the wind knocked out of him, and he was back on the ice in the 3rd period.
Do any of you actually play hockey? You can't check or push or crosscheck someone when it's an icing...all you can do is go for the puck, which he wasn't doing. I honestly don't think he intended to hit him that hard or to injure him, but that's why you can't hit on an icing call
Shelley claims he lost an edge and that's why it happened... yeah, he lost an edge after driving McQuaid into the boards. Everybody knows he's one of those guys like Boogaard that really have no business being in the league. He's not a player, a 4th liner or a plugger. He's a goon, a cheapshot artist, a hack who can't keep a regular shift in the league based on his playing abilities.
@jayduke4ever When he played with the Rangers, he didn't do any of that crap. In fact he was one of the better players towards the end of the season and scored a few, so I don't by him being a cheap shot artist. It's that Flyers uniform that makes him play that way, their dirty play has been happening since the 70's.
@RadioGuy211 This isn't about players that played for the Flyers. This is about Jody Shelley. Just because he plays for the Flyers doesn't mean he should get the title of a dirty player. Thats bullshit. There's alot of dirty players in the league because they've always played that way, not because of the jersey they wear.
@Philly4Life1818 Flyers have always been dirty: Hartnell, Carcillo, Richards. Come on and wake up. Sheley doesn't have a history of cheapshots, he has a history of being a tough fighter. His exuse that he lost an edge is bullshit, you can tell he clearly went after him (away from the puck) to hit him.
@RadioGuy211 Ok so blame JODY SHELLEY!! THE PLAYER THAT MADE THE HIT. It has nothing to do with the team. Matt Cooke is dirty, are the penguins a dirty team. Sean Avery is one of the dirtiest players in the league. It must be because he's a Ranger. STFU. If a player does one thing dirty or a million things dirty, its because THAT PLAYER chooses to do it. Not because of the team he is on. Quit being a retard. RadioGuy fits you perfectly. Stop talking hockey. Go toss a football with a HS fb team.
@Philly4Life1818 The Flyers have always had and always will have a dirty team. Whether it be goaltender interference penalities by Hartnell, or stuff from that asshole Carcillo, you have to admit the Flyers are right up there in terms of the number of suspensions and fines over the years. If you think this is a coincedence, you need help or your in denial about your cheap team. Flyers have always played dirty.
@RadioGuy211 Well a "dirty" team got them 2 championships in the 70s, took them to the finals last year and keeps them on top of the NHL this year. Within the top 3 teams. Remember when Russia dominated the NHLs best in the 70s but couldn't keep up with the Flyers rough game? Russia wanted to leave after the first period, literally. Maybe teams just need to learn how to take the body, play the game hard whistle to whistle, finish checks, and get in scraps. then they can keep up with the Flyers.
shelley infact did apologize to mcquaid in person right after this.
Shelley was given a game misconduct and a five-minute major. He apologized to McQuaid once on the ice and again in the hallway outside the dressing rooms, McQuaid said.
"When I was coming off the ice, he was waiting for me there," said McQuaid, who returned in the third period. "He said he was sorry and he didn't mean to, so I've just got to take what he says."
it looks worse in slow.shelley def let up at the end of the play
To clarify, from Rule 81.1: "Any contact between opposing players while pursuing the puck on an icing must be for the sole purpose of playing the puck and not for eliminating the opponent from playing the puck. Unnecessary or dangerous contact could result in penalties being assessed to the offending player."
Shelley's actions were in clear violation of this rule.
I know that was a nasty hit, but I just can't see Shelley doing it on purpose. And by that I mean, it was reckless and stupid and he shouldn't have done it but I don't think he meant it to go quite that wrong and I think when he calls to apologize it'll be sincere. (I'm a Bruins fan, for the record.)
even chara is dead scared of shelley shelley killed thorton in 2 fights he just have played more minutes in the serie hes bullying everybody in the bruins and lucic was dead scared also when big brayden coburn tried to engage him bu shoveling him bad what i say is the flyers are the tougest team in the league no doubt but have horrible netmindrrs

@RadioGuy211 you're an idiot because you think the flyers uniform somehow possesses players to play like assholes

In Shellys defense, he was coming hard and McQuaid did put the breaks on. Still shouldn't have happened but i'm sure there was no malice in that hit.

@Rjdck Obviously he put on the breaks, there are boards there..

shelley infact did apologize to mcquaid in person right after this.

Body contact alone in this situation is a penalty. Shelley knew what he was doing. Here's hoping Thornton destroys him next time they meet.

Well, imo if you play a role lile Shelly does these things will happen from time to time.
Hopefully McQuaid is not injured and Shelly will get a few games and that's it.
