Eminent Domain needs to be removed from the constitution. When it comes to individual rights, such as property rights, the rule should be to convince not coerce.
If you want something that is someone else's you need to convince them to hand it over, not coerce them.
I can't believe this can happen in america. The constitution says eminent domain is for public USE not public PURPOSE. The Judicial branch is out of control.
it wouldn't matter if the government wanted to build a road, skyrise or anything else. Government has no moral right to forcefully take someone's private property. ALL eminent domain should be illegal.
Boy has the city got it backwards; taking property to set up the community center for kids might very well qualify as a proper use, but they have turned eminent domain on its head...
Now I've seen everything. How can Jose Vargas become a police officer if he was convicted of armed robbery with a firearm at 15. Umm, yes, Mr. Vargas, I believe we'll pass on hiring you because of your FELONY CONVICTIONS!! And what's up with Victor Nunez's hair? That's some toupee!
Do you really believe people cannot change for the better? I do not know this Mr. Vargas but can people really not do good years down the road? If someone sins once.....are they always sinners? Can people not be forgiven? Can people not make up for their past mistakes? Just wondering.....Peace
In certain cases, yes, people can change and be forgiven and do good and some actually deserve it. However, those with a record, even as a juvenile, for armed robbery should not be given a gun and law enforcement authority over their fellow citizens. Ever. Sorry, he should find another line of work.
And, I'm not just saying this stuff off of one video I randomly saw. I've seen dozens and dozens of incidents just like this. Another perfect example of this is the Trans-Texas Corridor. Now that is some interesting reading.
Eminent Domain is such a blatant disregard for the constitution it's not even funny. But most people just roll over and take it. It's weird this is what the whole Revolution, Shay's Rebellion, Civil War, and all these other things we loooove to TALK about, but no one talks about WHY they happened. They were all about the government's role in our lives. That's why the Constitution and Bill of Rights was drafted. But tell that to Congress and they'll just "ammend" those two little errors.
@Psychosmurf547 oof, wow, that rant was a while ago. Well, I think it's a ammendement to the constitution or a sub-section. But either way, technically I think your right. But, I think the interpretation of it in alot of cases is taken to the extreme.
they did this in Long Branch New Jersey, a town close to home to do the same exact thing. Stop eminent domain. more tax revenue? bribes? none of which are good reasons.
Eminent Domain is an unholy outdated policy that runs, especially in this day and age, against the rights and liberties of Americans and whole notion of self-determination that this country was founded upon. At one time it had its purpose, when the country was industrializing itself and for the creation of mass transit, but its day is over. It is now being perverted in such a way to extend the governments will over the citizens.

Minor records are sealed and irrelevant when the person becomes a reformed adult.

@demboys18 The power of eminent domain is given to the government by the constitution. I don't agree with it, but go figure.

This will happen eventually *every* time you give a group of people (government) the right to the initiation of force.

OMG... did the city's director of redevelopment really say, the residents "probably wouldn't even understand" eminent domain?
He might as well have said "Those stupid Mexicans" out loud, because it's obvious that's what he meant.

Eminent domain should be at best abolished and at the very least restricted dramatically from it current incarnation.
