Look at more recent performances instead of this one; this one isn't great, but he's improved in four years time. Duvall is good! Catrell is good! Black gives way to blue is amazing! And I feel the more they play, the more AIC will move towards accepting Duvall in! He will give his elements...its big shoes to fill, but hes doing a pretty decent job!
yea i hear ya, since the album came out i've seen a lot more pro-duvall comments in forums, reviews & youtube. I personally really like him, but people have a right to dislike the guy or his voice. I just think it's really lame when anyone gets all worked up about his right to sing in AIC. It's the bands call, and the haters act like they are part of the band or knew Layne Staley personally.

What are you talking about? Layne vacated the position it was up for grabs. It just came out on Celebrity Rehab, so you wouldn't have known this then, but Mike Starr was w/ Layne the day he od'd and Layne told Mike not to call 911 so he didnt and he left. Layne's actions werent those of someone that had intentions of staying around. Will's good enough for Jerry and Jerrys in AIC, so...

Well, maybe they should do some Nirvana shows w/ guest singers. I'd check that out. Also, Alice in Chains is a little different b/c Cantrell has always been the main songwriter and has always sung on most of the songs, especially live sine they liked 2 double Layne's voice on the records.
In my opinion, AC/DC was able to find Brian Johnson who followed a very similar style vocally and was clearly able to take the job. When AiC finds someone like Staley to take the reins in a similar but still unique style then ill believe in them more. this sounds good but different
This guy's voice isn't really the problem on the new album, it's the lack of inspiration and good lyrics. Only like half the songs on the new album are decent.
Seriously, the last few songs on the album (excluding the title track) have really uninspired riffs. And as for lyrics, we used to have brilliant songs like Rotten Apple or Nutshell or Sludge Factory. Now we have "distortion laced with spite" and "desperate plans make sense and alone I hide." Not quite up to par with the old Alice.

dude. don't buy the new album. Get over this shit. The new album is there best one! I bought Facelift, Dirt, and Jar of Flies the day they were released age 10, 12 and 13 respectively. I missed Tripod by 2 days but I broke my fucking leg. Ass - it's a great album, a reincarnation and the songs are all badass. They are not about drugs but the music is really fucking good. Maybe you need to lay off the pot for awhile dawg.

umm. please explain. All Secrets Known, great riff; Acid Bubble, great riff; Private Hell (masterpiece), Check My Brain, great riff; A Looking In View, Last of my kind. They are similar sounding new multifaceted songs. This album blows tripod up, literally put the 2 side by side it blows up....but i still love it because I love this band
explain WHAT? it's an opinion. I like the slow parts of Acid Bubble, I like A Looking in View, When the Sun Rose Again, the title track. The rest (riffs and lyrics) are cheesy compared to classic AIC. None of the new songs are awful, but none of them are really phenomenal, either. And no, it doesn't blow Tripod up. I don't mind Duvall, but I doubt he'll ever have something genius like Frogs under his belt. That's my OPINION.
Tripod is a masterpiece, the new album is just good. "blows tripod up", you are really nuts. I think they will never make an album that could top anything done with Layne. The new album is great, I've listened Private Hell, Check My Brain, Acid Bubble, etc one hundred times, but they will never top the heart and soul they put in Again, Sludge Factory, Brush Away , if you want to talk about Tripod or my faves A Little Bitter, Angry Chair or Bleed the Freak.
Layne was a fantastic singer and frontman for AiC but they are still AiC without him however much he may be missed. Wouldn't expect The Rolling Stones to change their name because Brian Jones died and ACDC was still ACDC when Bon Scott died. I love the new album, have complete faith in William DuVall and it sounds and feels like an AiC album so it is and always will be.
All of Alice In Chain's made them famous, not just Lane. This new guy fill's the spot obviously. He's good but he's no Lane. Still they deserve to be playing music none the less. They should have came back with a different name like, Alice or something Close but not it. It's a shame that one guy can make a band get so far. Then they take the band and run with it after he dies... Dont get me wrong. Jerry is a big part of AIC. But it would have gotten nowhere without Layne.
Such a tuff topic, I have a hard time with this issue. Layne had a voice that would make almost any band legendary, but Cantrell's input can't be under-rated. Layne and DuVall are almost polar-opposites...in many ways Layne himself became the songs. How could anybody really sing these closely personal songs other then Layne? I get the feeling the old songs had the strongest story-lines and fit Layne's style perfectly. Bottomline- DuVall has massively huge 'shoes-to-fill' IMHO

a good acoustic can be very loud. and if you pay attention to the shape of the arena you'll notice that they're built so that sound resonates well and clearly for performances. and if you listen closely you can hear him playing.
Good lord Layne got quite a tan before this video was shot. His hair also seems different. I can't put my finger on it but there is definitely something different about him.
While I miss stayley everyday Cantrell was responsible for most of the songs and music, i for one am glad they're making new music and touring again, it's never gonna be the same as when stayley sang but there is still something great to be achieved from AIC.
People need to realize what true Alice in Chains fans know already,Jerry Cantrell played a huge part on harmony in this band,Layne and Jerry sound very similar thats what made that distinctive sound when they sang together,Listen to their new material its actually pretty good "Check my brain",Is off the chain you can hear that cantrell harmony It sounds like Alice in Chains so why Change their name,Stayley was a huge part,but so is Jerry
Duvall rocks. The guy sings pretty damn good, and remember this is live and he pulls it off quite good. Of course, he's not Layne, but on the other hand, he's not supposed to be either. He's just supposed to do the justice to the material, and in my opinion he does it perfectly fine.
So give the guy a break, and be happy you may get to see them live. At least they are out and doing their stuff.
For all the clowns who are an Duvall's nuts, give the guy a break. OF COURSE he isn't Layne so he isn't going to step in and fill in PERFECTLY all the parts that Layne did. Who can?? Your ears are USED TO listening to Layne's parts...but he's gone now. Of course the songs will sound different. But, seeing as AIC has a new album coming out, its probably better to wait and see how their sound evolves on songs they wrote with Duvall as a full fledged member. I'll reserve judgment.

I don't believe he's as good a singer as Layne..I mean he is a good singer, but I like Layne better. It seems like Duvall and Cantrell doesn't have as good harmony as Layne and Cantrell.

It's AIC's songs, not just Layne's. Layne wasn't the entire band, so stop acting like he was, you're spitting on Jerry and the other band members by doing that.
And besides, Jerry was the one who wrote this song, not Layne, so actually that'd make this Jerry's song. FAIL.

Well said @troyhol, if the guys in AiC think DuVall is good enough, then we as fans should accept him. Personally I think William is awesome. I'm gutted I never seen AiC live with Layne, and will always love the originals, but DuVall does a great job in my mind

Duvall is good! Catrell is good! Black gives way to blue is amazing! And I feel the more they play, the more AIC will move towards accepting Duvall in! He will give his elements...its big shoes to fill, but hes doing a pretty decent job!

yea i hear ya, since the album came out i've seen a lot more pro-duvall comments in forums, reviews & youtube. I personally really like him, but people have a right to dislike the guy or his voice. I just think it's really lame when anyone gets all worked up about his right to sing in AIC. It's the bands call, and the haters act like they are part of the band or knew Layne Staley personally.

What are you talking about? Layne vacated the position it was up for grabs. It just came out on Celebrity Rehab, so you wouldn't have known this then, but Mike Starr was w/ Layne the day he od'd and Layne told Mike not to call 911 so he didnt and he left. Layne's actions werent those of someone that had intentions of staying around. Will's good enough for Jerry and Jerrys in AIC, so...

Well, maybe they should do some Nirvana shows w/ guest singers. I'd check that out. Also, Alice in Chains is a little different b/c Cantrell has always been the main songwriter and has always sung on most of the songs, especially live sine they liked 2 double Layne's voice on the records.

In my opinion, AC/DC was able to find Brian Johnson who followed a very similar style vocally and was clearly able to take the job. When AiC finds someone like Staley to take the reins in a similar but still unique style then ill believe in them more. this sounds good but different

Seriously, the last few songs on the album (excluding the title track) have really uninspired riffs. And as for lyrics, we used to have brilliant songs like Rotten Apple or Nutshell or Sludge Factory. Now we have "distortion laced with spite" and "desperate plans make sense and alone I hide." Not quite up to par with the old Alice.

dude. don't buy the new album. Get over this shit. The new album is there best one! I bought Facelift, Dirt, and Jar of Flies the day they were released age 10, 12 and 13 respectively. I missed Tripod by 2 days but I broke my fucking leg. Ass - it's a great album, a reincarnation and the songs are all badass. They are not about drugs but the music is really fucking good. Maybe you need to lay off the pot for awhile dawg.

I half-defended Duvall's voice in the first place, I'm just saying the songwriting and riffs aren't up to par with something like Jar of Flies or Tripod. Way to respect an opinion.

They are similar sounding new multifaceted songs. This album blows tripod up, literally put the 2 side by side it blows up....but i still love it because I love this band

explain WHAT? it's an opinion. I like the slow parts of Acid Bubble, I like A Looking in View, When the Sun Rose Again, the title track. The rest (riffs and lyrics) are cheesy compared to classic AIC. None of the new songs are awful, but none of them are really phenomenal, either. And no, it doesn't blow Tripod up. I don't mind Duvall, but I doubt he'll ever have something genius like Frogs under his belt. That's my OPINION.

Tripod is a masterpiece, the new album is just good. "blows tripod up", you are really nuts. I think they will never make an album that could top anything done with Layne. The new album is great, I've listened Private Hell, Check My Brain, Acid Bubble, etc one hundred times, but they will never top the heart and soul they put in Again, Sludge Factory, Brush Away , if you want to talk about Tripod or my faves A Little Bitter, Angry Chair or Bleed the Freak.

Layne was a fantastic singer and frontman for AiC but they are still AiC without him however much he may be missed. Wouldn't expect The Rolling Stones to change their name because Brian Jones died and ACDC was still ACDC when Bon Scott died. I love the new album, have complete faith in William DuVall and it sounds and feels like an AiC album so it is and always will be.

Such a tuff topic, I have a hard time with this issue. Layne had a voice that would make almost any band legendary, but Cantrell's input can't be under-rated. Layne and DuVall are almost polar-opposites...in many ways Layne himself became the songs. How could anybody really sing these closely personal songs other then Layne? I get the feeling the old songs had the strongest story-lines and fit Layne's style perfectly. Bottomline- DuVall has massively huge 'shoes-to-fill' IMHO

a good acoustic can be very loud. and if you pay attention to the shape of the arena you'll notice that they're built so that sound resonates well and clearly for performances. and if you listen closely you can hear him playing.

While I miss stayley everyday Cantrell was responsible for most of the songs and music, i for one am glad they're making new music and touring again, it's never gonna be the same as when stayley sang but there is still something great to be achieved from AIC.

People need to realize what true Alice in Chains fans know already,Jerry Cantrell played a huge part on harmony in this band,Layne and Jerry sound very similar thats what made that distinctive sound when they sang together,Listen to their new material its actually pretty good "Check my brain",Is off the chain you can hear that cantrell harmony It sounds like Alice in Chains so why Change their name,Stayley was a huge part,but so is Jerry

Duvall rocks. The guy sings pretty damn good, and remember this is live and he pulls it off quite good. Of course, he's not Layne, but on the other hand, he's not supposed to be either. He's just supposed to do the justice to the material, and in my opinion he does it perfectly fine.
So give the guy a break, and be happy you may get to see them live. At least they are out and doing their stuff.

For all the clowns who are an Duvall's nuts, give the guy a break. OF COURSE he isn't Layne so he isn't going to step in and fill in PERFECTLY all the parts that Layne did. Who can?? Your ears are USED TO listening to Layne's parts...but he's gone now. Of course the songs will sound different. But, seeing as AIC has a new album coming out, its probably better to wait and see how their sound evolves on songs they wrote with Duvall as a full fledged member. I'll reserve judgment.
