Such an irony that the NES version being more sought for could only have 1 player onscreen. I can see that this version supported two players. Thus fitting of the name DOUBLE Dragon. Pretty interesting.
This was made by pure greed. Atari was long dead by the time this was ported, ugh. Anyone know how much this cost retail? Btw atari 2600 new sold for $50 in 1988
Gotta agree with this, you have to develop a REALLY good sense of timing with that very limited reach in this version of Double Dragon. However... Once I get them on the ground (with usually an elbow smash)I just get right next to the enemy, just above or below them(never go toe to toe with them, you'll usually end up loosing) and keep wailing away.
@shamrock8806 The problem with Double Dragon for the Atari 2600 is that it's Double Dragon for the Atari 2600. Amazing that they managed to get so much out of such a decrepit console, but really, this game does not belong on such a tech-disadvantaged format. See also: Shadow of the collosus, Just Cause 1 and the PS2 GTA games among Many, many others.
I don't know whether to laugh hysterically or cry over this comment... Just so you know, there is no such Intellivision version of Double Dragon.(unless by some freak coincidence somebody out here on the intarwebz is actually working on a homebrew version for it haha ^_^ )
I would never expect the 2600 have the game Double Dragon. And if 2600 had a version of this game, I would never expect it to seem anywhere near as good as this!
I remember a mate of mine having this on their Atari 2600 and I also remember thinking this version made my Commodore 64 version (which was diabolical) look GOOD in comparison.
The fact that there's an Atari 2600 version of this game left me laughing when I saw it in a used games shop a few years ago, and it's even funnier since it's actually quite fun!
Man, I tried this on my 2600 yesterday, and I was smashed by the bad guys! Are you the terminator or something? Congratulations for the video (and your skill).
This was really 2600? The graphics and sound are phenomenal for that system. You had to trick it to just draw two different colors in the same horizontal line!
This was THE single hardest version of Double Dragon ever made. Me And my brother could actually finish this & i remember people at school wouldn't believe us, so ofcourse we'd have to invite them round & show them.
@JeriousGreenwood You must have a touch of the D. You cant even har pull kick or over shoulder throw on the SMS version. the graffix are crap compare the back ground on the NES to no background on the SMS. When you play the SMS version you see why NES didnt have two players.
Exactly and since this was one of the later releases for the 2600, the programmers had learned a lot of tricks to get the hardware to do things nobody ever thought it could. It's always that way. The best games usually come out near the end of a consoles life cycle. In the beginning all they have to go on is the documentation the manufacturer provides them but they learn a lot of things that are undocumented as time goes on.
@Chasmodon You know what? Graphics DO NOT make a game. Maybe this is the best game on Atari 2600 from a graphics standpoint. It doesn't matter because it's crap. Funny how Adventure had the simplest graphics you can find (your character was a generic SQUARE for God's sake) yet it was extremelly addicting.
Despite the limitations of the 2600, you could tell that the programmers actually cared enough to try to make this game somewhat playable, unlike a lot of the crap games that were put out...Holy Crap, Abobo is throwing a giant turd!
hes hitting the enemies with his extenda batton dink!

the problem with double dragon for the atari 2600 is that your character's arms don't reach far enough to hit them before they hit you.

I was baffled when I saw this video.
I never knew that Double Dragon has been produced for the Atari game system(s) too...
My only experience with Double Dragon has been with the Game Boy Classic, which I bought from a nephew.
I must say that Double Dragon was pretty hard on the Game Boy too, mostly the body-builder kind of enemies seemed impossible to beat.
Though I can't imagine playing this version for more than a minute or 5, the music lacks variation...
