He was described by the Venetian ambassador Paolo Fagolo in 1563 as "slight of stature and roundfaced, with pale blue eyes, somewhat prominent lip, and pink skin, but his overall appearance is very attractive." The Ambassador went on to say "He dresses very tastefully, and everything that he does is courteous and gracious."
Philip was born in Valladolid, the son of Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire, and his consort, Isabella of Portugal. During his reign, Spain was the foremost Western European power. Under his rule, Spain reached the height of its influence and power, directing explorations all around the world and settling the colonization of territories in all the known continents.
Philip II (Spanish: Felipe II; Portuguese: Filipe I ; 21 May 1527 - 13 September 1598) was King of Castile, Aragon, Portugal, Naples, Sicily, and, while married to Mary I, King of England and Ireland. He was lord of the Seventeen Provinces from 1556 until 1581, holding various titles for the individual territories such as Duke or Count.
Phillip was a very but not fanatically religious and cautious, if not hesitant, man who lead Spain from his desk. He and Elizabeth were on good terms for most of their time on earth together. He was not altogether supportive of Mary Queen of Scots either... she would have been claimant to both Kingdoms and friendly to the French...
Don't know about the other propaganda claims but Spain didn't have a permanent navy, and most (50-90%) of Phillip's sailors and soldiers weren't Spanish.
Jordi Molla en Cate Blanchett make great monarchs in this movie, but the real Felipe was already 60, and Elizabeth 55 when the Armada left for the invasion. So al least rather grey and she had bad teeth. If you want to see a good story of Elizabeth, but with less romance and almost no outdoor scenes, you should get Elizabeth R, the six-part series from the seventies.
It's funny how Elizabeth's father [king Henry VIII] didn't want anything to do with Elizabeth when she was born, but she happend to be an even greater ruler than her father and even reigned longer than he did. All that time they were worried about King Henry VIII having a male heir to the throne-who would have thought that his daughter [Elizabeth] would be one of the GREATEST rulers England ever had and one of the greatest rulers in the world.
What an amazing song. Is there a longer version of this? The movie was good too. The acting was superb. I loved Cate Blanchett, Jordi Molla and Clive Owen.
He was indeed not as this movie portraitted him. He put a great effort in the medicinal studies in enitire Europe. But he did some very terrible thing in the name of his belive, just as extremists do right now. No one is a monster, but sometimes we can. Elizabeth was just more chiller, she didn''t have a believe to fight for, and did not leave everythingup to god. That's wy England won in the end.
Well he didn´t attack England in the name of his belief, the constants attacks of piracy and the murders of 800 catholic priests by Elizabeth I were 2 good reasons.Philip was not a fanatical religious and the Spanish inquisition just killed 3000 people in 300 years of history,Elizabeth killed more people than the Spanish and Rome inquisitions did together in 300 years.
Elizabeth´s father also killed 75.000 catholics and Cromwell killed 4000 irish catholics too, England didn´t respect the freedom of religion and Philip just did the right to protect the catholics everywhere and what he tought that was the true faith and in my opinion that´s not a bad thing.
Hehe, then you may want to open your history books for a change, for certainly he did some horrible things, things than cannot be approved. He was a decent king.... but we should not think of him as one big hero, for he was not. And pretty much the same goes for Elizabeth.
Some things can´t be approved under the actual perspective, but it´s imposible to judge with a fair perspective this kind of things 4 centuries later coz the actual point of view about almost everything is so different. He was human and make mistakes to get a greater good.I don´t think he was a hero, but he was a good king for Spain.

Also known as Philip the Prudent, he ruled one of the world's largest empires which included territories in every continent then known to Europeans.

Jordi Moya made and awful work with his performance as Felipe II, he made a clown, a fanatic, excesive performance, overacted, just the black legend.
