It is possible that the oriole saw you putting out the food, and was less afraid because of that. I have had several different species of birds come within a few feet of me while I was filling the feeders. It is amazing how tame they will become when they are hungry.
He probably got alittle drunk from feeding on fermenting fruit on a tree or feeder thus allowing you to get close to him. Alcohol puts your guard down.

He was sitting on the ground out in the open for a half hour. Then didn't fly away when I came close up to it.

If this was during migration, it is possible that the bird was simply exhausted.

Yes they are a beauty, i got soooo close to a gold finch, i could of touched it, i dont know why it didnt flyaway? must ahve been frozen...

in europe and asia we have got REAL orioles, they are bigger and sings more beautiful than the american 'orioles'.
