These Berliner Philharmoniker snippets on YouTube are great but I'd like to hear the whole piece, not just 2 or 3 minutes. Where can I download the whole performances?
Note that I say "hear". I'm into the music, not the theatrics. No videos, thank-you, I just want to listen to the music on my hone.
I checked the EMI website and they don't seem to have any MP3 downloads and the DGG website reflects a state of utter confusion. I don't see how things can be so difficult.
Just got through watching this concert at the Digital concert hall.
Overall a very good performance.
Very minor quibble...I wish at 56:50 of this symphony things were drawn out a little more...the part where the horns are doing a fanfare figure with the flutes and piccolo's were really trilling alot...then the baba....baaa...baaaaaaa from the trombones. Yes..that part.
I think the person having the most fun out there was Wieland Welzel one of the timpanists. Watching him play is a study of someone who feels Joy in Music.
It was a nice touch in the final minutes of this piece to have all the french horn players stand .
It's interesting to see the musicians interact with each other when they exit the
stage. Many members shook hands with each other..others..well...were kinda ..dour.
@asianbeavercleaver After all, having several horns all play top Cs is a great idea. I'm sure there are some interesting versions of Mahler 5 out there...
if you go to this orchestra website, and go to the part which accredited the musicians; you will take notice of a few concermasters, and several players from each instrument.
Thanks so much for providing us with these stunning videos!
I know EMI has released Rattle's performance of the 2nd symphony of Mahler, but Rattle's going through the whole set with Berlin in live concert. Do you happen to know if EMI is planning on releasing any more of this set?
Let's hope the answer is yes, because if it is, I'll own it!
@BBRENTTAGHAPP Yeah, I was going to ask, too...I think I've watched all of this BP clips...and there must have been a dozen concertmasters....(okay, I am exaggerating) :) In Philly, we've had the same guy for like 12 years now....
These guys can play! Great sound and precision. And it's wonderful to see the instruments that are ignored so easily, such as the triangle at the moment they're being played!
What. A. Sound. It's very difficult to proclaim any group or conductor the "best" because even this one has its peers for quality and consistent artistry (currently I'd specifically note the Mariinsky and Concertgebouw). What's disturbing to me is how far the American contingent has fallen: the once-mighty Philadelphians on the verge of bankruptcy, Boston's sound weakened by Levine, even the CSO whose Solti recordings of Mahler remain magnificent, less than it once was.
1:29 tells you what is the best orchestra on the face of the earth

@richxx4 For contractual reasons, we may show the complete performances only as video streams on our own platform, the Digital Concert Hall.

Love Stefan Dohr tearing the horn off his face after the top C at 1:12.

@Haeronthegreat If my C's were that nasty I'd get them off my face too.

@BBRENTTAGHAPP This is a mere coincidence. Luckily, he is still with the orchestra and performs regularly.

If you go to their website..you'll find that there are three " 1st Concertmasters" and 2 "Concertmasters".
So they must trade duties
