Schizophrenia is in my family. Twice I've descended into madness, each time brought on by enormous emo stress. I've heard voices all my life, but the times I went mad I believed them and obeyed them. That almost killed me. Both times I was able to return to sanity by temporary meds or rest and prayer, and realizing the voices could MOST TIMES not be trusted. However 2 or 3 times the voices were extremely helpful in avoiding accidents. My IQ is 145, thank God it's not higher!
@penkallli I generally hear the voices every day. For the last 6-7 years it has been a specific male voice, like that of a wizened old man who's extremely angry and threatening. He's always telling me dreadful things are going to happen to me. I mostly ignore him, or else I'll say back to him, "Oh... so YOU think I'm going to die soon. I see. Thanks for sharing." That drives him batty!! I have never seen any entities like movie about John Nash portrays. THANK GOD!!! :-)
If you can prove yourself to be more worthwhile before him in terms of academic wise by all means to label one of the world's respected mathematicians crazy, shut up otherwise. They are genius to whom people like you will never be able to understand what's going in their minds. You don't know how to honour and respect humans who spent their lifetime in theories. You know nothing.
He let his thoughts taken its course. So his Brain is a free space for thoughts. This benefits madness, maybe, but also it increases the probability to have one of these great insights he hade several times in his live. It is not all black OR white. BTW i know suchlike professors too on my university, you learn much, but not always that what you should learn in the lecture :D
What's logical to a genius is not logical to an idiot such as yourself because your mind can't comprehend their thought. I don't pretend for a moment that my mind can comprehend such things, but I am intelligent enough to know that some people are beyond my mind. If even this idea was beyond you then I suggest you look to your videos likes vs dislikes and witness your failure.
The real John Nash is still a GENIUS....who's contributions to our world far surpass anything any of us might dream to accomplish. Are you from FOXX news? This 53 seconds of unintelligible audio and view of the back of his head are a fraction of what I am sure was an extraordinary lecture. One that I would have jumped at the chance to hear. It is a shame that THIS is all you got out of this once in a life time chance to hear true intelligence. What a waste.
I agree. The person who put this video up will never, ever come close to the intelligence that John Nash possesses. Therefore, I can only conclude that this is jealousy. That makes the OP pitiful, to be jealous of a genius like Nash, who has learned to live a productive life despite one of the worlds most crippling mental illnesses. The OP of this video will never get past the urge to make fun of people.....which will in turn, make him/her nothing in life.
no no you see so many angles at once its hard to stay linear. its like trying not to be distracted while seeing all possibilites and connections at once. its easy to go into a worm hole because all information is connected and its hard not to go into an unrelated subject and describe what you see there.

Now if you have a problem about any of us mental type - Think before u start looking and judging us. If you Don't understabd us leave all us th Hell alone!
Putting the word 'crazy' insinuates a negative stigma. If you do your research you'll find that 'schizophrenic' and 'crazy' are different terms. I hope your ignorance keeps you happy.
His disease has no cure, and he is a genius to manage schizophrenia like he does, the best example of his intelligence, @donutdrinkp the title of your video exposes him in an unnecessary way... Why should you bring the worst side of a fantastic man??
I don't give a toss that he is schizophrenic. The fact that he can do what he does with his DISABILITY makes him a man to respect. If i had a hat, i would take it off. I'm not an economist, but would love to have a lecture from Dr John Nash.
To all of you who believe that crazy is not the correct word for John Nash,
Crazy, by definition, is the state of mental derangement and disorder. By the definition of the word, John Nash is, in fact, crazy. We need to respect words for what they are and not argue whether it is "polite". Those who deny the meaning of the word and its connection to Mr. Nash are defiling words and Mr. Nash, as you are lying. However, we must also see that he, as well as "crazy", is "brilliant". The two co-exist.
I just saw the movie for the first time and I love it. It was recommended to me by a doctor, my mother is diagnosed as a schizophrenic and I don't know what she is going thru but this helps a bit good movie
Just because someone has 'psychological or mental health issues' people start calling them 'crazy' or 'mad'. I have OCD and suffered from Servere Major Depression, people in my own family would call me 'mad'. Now, after many years of rediculing me, they have some knowledge of this subject and understand me a bit more.
There have been studies that show that those who are creative, intelligent, imaginative, are a genius and are gifted though this does not apply to everyone who is intelligent and gifted (mental health issues I mean-sorry)....... "May be predisposed to mental illness/have the traits".
cant belive you put up such an offensive title for a video of such a brilliant man. "A beautiful mind' is a bloody great movie. And here at princeton, Dr. Nash is very well respected man.
Schizophrenia affects the most highly intelligent of beings. It is a crying shame that when such an accomplished being is ridiculed for having an illness that is associated with a mental state of being, that he or she loses the respect of fellow human beings. If one has diabetes, one takes insulin, if one has cancer, one takes chemotherapy,. Belittling people with health issues just goes to show up those who are of little inteligence, devoid of empathy, hecklers and name calling bullies.
putting some of the others' thoughts/comments into a more simplistic/brief form, 'donutdrinkp' obviously titled this vid using the word 'crazy' in order to attract views, mean-spirited or otherwise. It obviously worked.
John Nash does have a Beautiful Mind. For all of you that dont understand mental illness. You have to realize what its about. My husband has schizophrenia . I have seen him go to hell and back again. He has been in the hospital about 4 or 5 times. He had to quit his job and go on a disability pension. Life for a mentally ill person is not fun. Hes doing well now though and is on the right medication. I am so proud of him. Hes come along way. So be kind and understanding.
John Nash is a truly inspiring human being. Show him the respect and honor he is due as both an intellectual and as a human being who has persevered despite all odds.
I find it hilarious that you two are bickering over something that is governed by game theory, and that it is about the effective creator of modern game theory.
mr. casserole, I think you need to consider that while it may come off poorly to some, the title was written with good intentions. I say people are crazy in endearment on occasion.
and mr. donut, thanks for sharing. this is some of the only footage I can find of Mr. Nash teaching. I wish I could meet him
@eastwoodnorris Interesting. What do you mean our argument is governed by game theory. I think you have the kernel of something interesting there. Kind of excited to hear about how you're thinking about this.
@donutdrinkp you two are currently demonstrating game theory. Not in the sense that Nash examined, he worked with much more mathematic systems in game theory to determine what was the best course of action. But an argument is an inherently competitive action between two entities. In competitive actions, there are governing systems, a concept that was modernized by Josh Nash beginning in the late 40's.
That being the case, I thought it was interesting/funny that you two were displaying his work
i believe he cleverly said to the stupid people on the audience, and also now at the you tube. that they are not honest, and that he is like diogenes. searching for honest people.
It's illogical for a person to be angry at the simple title of a video on YouTube regarding a person that neither of us know, when their response to that title is to call the poster, me - a person whom you do not know - an incredible number of names and insult his/her intelligence (something that is also searchable). It insinuates that you have different standards for how to treat someone based on something intangible.
@donutdrinkp All your comment above does is invite a "You started it" dialogue. Your very title not only pretends to know "the Real John Nash." It also rather flippantly calls him crazy. Change the title and watch the namecalling problem dissipate. If you can't understand that, you are, sorry to call you it, hopeless. I'll leave you to yours.
@donutdrinkp Sorry Donut. But I don't buy it. The title of your video is offensive and insensitive. People have a right to be angry. It doesn't matter whether they know the man or not. Your insulting all people whom you call "crazy."
Apologies for the confusion then, and the double entendre in my "answer." The implication behind your "100%...first rant" remark is that my other "rants" were incomprehensible. Strutted out in argument form, my statement could stand as coherent and non-sequitur-free. Don't know about the other trolls, still working on myself. It seems to me though--and this isn't meant as a slam--it seems the gist of your title, when uncovered via a youtube "Nash" search, subtly invites us back under the bridge
Fuck you donutdrinkp, give him a break. Just because he solved something you didn't... or COULDN'T is not his fault. Lapses in his ability to remain in what you perceive as "genius", or "normal" are a battle for him. The fact that he is a genius due to that fact seems to be imperceivable to you.. who's really "crazy" here....
Nash is referring to Diogenes of Sinope, a Greek philosopher and ascetic who praised virtue in the face of dishonest people. He's also the father of what's known as Cynicism. He goes on to make a cameo appearance in a very famous passage (125) in Nietzsche's Gay Science. In that role he claims, "God is dead," and waves a lamp in the faces of those who have killed Him, asking who among us can replace Him.
Nash isn't crazy. You're just an idiot. What were you doing at Brown?
@turtlecasserole I'm not the one who couldn't be bothered to read the video description before I pretended to know what I was talking about. The question is not about what was being talked about but in what context.
@donutdrinkp No, I read the description, several times, along with the title, so your arrogant presumptuousness reveals itself again. Not surprising since arrogance is the ugly matching bookend of ignorance. The life of Diogenes is no more a "tale" than is the life of Aristotle, except in Niet . And if context is so crucial, you should supply it in terms of video footage. As it is, there's nothing crazy seeming about this video, except your idiotic, dishonest compulsion to post it to youtube.
@turtlecasserole As to whether I could supply context through footage, I wish. This was all that survived of the lecture. Sad, considering how many hilarious asides he had including multiple involving Russian slurs and one hilarious one about cocaine. Perhaps, you ought to try to understand intention. The video was originally posted as a means to preserve it for myself. I Didn't expect many others to watch it. The title is incidental, the description is for posterity.
@donutdrinkp Fair enough w.r.t shortage of footage. But the intention still comes off as slanderous (a word that entails a sort of dishonest idiocy), if for no other reason than the mocking tone of the title, incidental or not. Plus Youtube is a public medium, not private. If you intended to preserve this as your own personal keepsake, why post the video here, a place where you're required, prima facie, to consider how posterity, perhaps "many others," will receive it when they watch it?
@turtlecasserole Because the way you and everyone else reacts to the video doesn't matter to me. The only reason I'm engaging you is because you seem to be reasonable, an assumption based 100% on the fact that your first rant was in coherent English.
@donutdrinkp Wrong. The correct answer to my question is: Because you are full of yourself. Which is to say, you're full of shit. 'w.r.t.'=with regard to. Look up 'prima facie' on your own. I don't see anything else that a reasonably educated person wouldn't be able to make sense of. Honestly--you do know what 'honest' means, don't you?--you can't understand my other comments? Then I ask again, What were you doing at Brown?
@turtlecasserole Man, my statement wasn't about your other comments. It was a complement about you're intelligible writing throughout. You read false intent into it. YouTube is full of idiots. I was saying you don't seem like one of them. I appreciate the brazen non sequitur, however. If you would like, feel free to insult me some more. God knows I don't care at all. But I invite you to rise above the endless hoards of YouTube trolls. You seem like a more decent human being than they are.
lot of people call him a bad person but wasnt he sick, didnt he have schizofrenia..? How can you possibly expect him to be nice if you dont even know whats real and wat isnt..?
Wasn't funny a beautiful mind doesn't tell all his views maybe like 2% of them your a sad little man and who gives a fuck if his back is turned even now he is still smarter than you grow up kid
What I find worse than your perceived view that he should not be looked upon favourably, is your view that simply because they made a movie about him he should be condemned.
On a side note, you have no idea on his true views, the movie was 99% fiction. The communist views you speak of were actually delusions, you will find 90% of schizophrenics will have very similar delusions too.
Judging him on his youthful mistakes is pretty ironic too, you should possibly look in the mirror yourself first
After reading the comments on this page, I can see one thing more clearly than a fingerprint on a window. No matter how large or how small an issue, it will always produce some of the most heated debates...so heated as to result to insults. This alone makes no man worthy of the title, "good man." We are all just men, John Nash included. Meaning no one here holds the higher moral ground.
Wow i cant belive someone would want to mock a person who we can learn so much from. Nash is a stong individual who has sadly been diagnosed with this terrible disease but lucky he has the strength to keep moving forward rather than mock and make fun of him why dont u look at his hecktic life and learn what he has done many would have givin up i give much respect to this man
He has schizophrenia. His nonsensical speaking is the phenomenon known as "word salad." Instead of laughing at a highly intelligent man, I suggest you go and watch A Beautiful Mind. It's a simply amazing movie about him.
@mickeymouse12678 The speech of schizophrenics though sometimes is interpreted by limited minds as "nonsense" or "insanity" is often very intelligent, connected and articulate. The problem is the person listening needs to be able to step outside the box of common communication. "Word salad"? Never heard the term but it's fitting I suppose.
@mickeymouse12678 Hah! "Go and watch A Beautiful Mind." You say that as though it's an accurate, unembellished depiction of his life. What's next, "watch Black Hawk Down if you want to know how it feels to be a soldier"?
@LoquaciousApe Jeez. I never said it was totally accurate. It's a movie, so of course it's a dramatization, but it gives you a good look into the struggle with schizophrenia. Plus, it's also just an awesome movie. Go check it out! :)
I suggest some of you commenters look up the term 'autism' and chew on the findings for a while. Especially personal accounts from people diagnosed with an autistic-spectrum disorder may be helpful. (They were to me.)
Anti-Semitic? Russian hating? Like Goldsman remarked, most of Nash's colleagues were Jewish, and he is a paranoid schizophrenic living at the time of the Cold War. Those were the targets of cospiracy theorists at the time. He also sought political asylum in France and East Germany, and tried to renounce his USA citizenship (anti-american or simply ill?). Here, I see unproved allegations about his personal life presented as facts (for the record, he and his wife remarried in 2001... just saying).
he's well known as a crackpot who's ideas were used to make life in the west extremely miserable for all its inhabitants... but some people get their history from hollywood and their foreign affairs info from watching 24
When your contribution to mathematics will reach a tenth of what Nash has produced in his career (topology, algebraic geometry, logic, and, yes, even game theory), then, maybe, I will be able to consider your comment as something more than a pretentious line from a self-important individual (come on, you are just a Nobel away... maybe you might start from getting a doctorate from Princeton?). Blaming the downside of capitalism on Nash' theories... really? It has come to that?
@MrFrancoisBoucher actually, your response reveals more about your frustrated attempts to sound intellectual than mine. I never mentioned his maths credentials.. instead said that taking the ideas of a paranoid schizophrenic, with a low opinion of his fellow man.. and applying them society wide.. has produced a society of paranoid people who have low opinions of each other.
@ChocolateExplosion oh, so you get your history from "the trap" by adam curtis? excellent docu btw..
what else than his math credentials should you judge nash's professional career by? can you really call nash a crackpot because of how others choose to use his ideas?
He has a mental illness. You can't expect coherence in some aspects, but for those people who say that he is not a good person, don't understand his disease. Don't judge people who are sick, it's not fear. And... he is more intelligent than us, sorry, but it's true... he fights with daily common problems, with difficulties and with his own mind.
Look guys, i think that nobody cares to make a friendship with J. Nash or anyone like him. We all know him because of his research and his accomplishments and not because he was one of the celebrities...
So, what we all just have to do is to focus on what he did academically and not socially.
I can't understand the words "good" or "bad" person that you use to say!
The only thing that everyone can say is that he is a great mind and researcher!! So, please stop this bullshit!
Everyone here is talkin mad smack, good and bad. Do any of you actually know him? Are you a friend or relative? Do you know him enough to call him the things you do? If the answer is "no" then maybe you should all stop acting as if hes your pal.
@ChaosTheoryCrew Why does he "deserve only the utmost of both" descredit and disrespect? Or do you just not know how to use English? Also, how am I trying to capitalize on his disability? Let me teach you a new word today. The word is "non sequitur".
To the uploader - you are a parasite which shamelessly tries to leech off the greatness of others in the most pathetic way. Any attempts to redirect the light from Nash to yourself are instantly negated by your obvious uncontrollable greed. I hope you get cancer, no wait - I mean schizophrenia.
You fucker! The schizophrenia is a desiase, is not an excuse for bother and insult people. Grow up!!!

so imho its not far fetched.

@donutdrinkp @turtlecasserole
I wish I could meet him
eastwoodnorris 7 months ago 9
@eastwoodnorris Interesting. What do you mean our argument is governed by game theory. I think you have the kernel of something interesting there. Kind of excited to hear about how you're thinking about this.
donutdrinkp 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp you two are currently demonstrating game theory. Not in the sense that Nash examined, he worked with much more mathematic systems in game theory to determine what was the best course of action. But an argument is an inherently competitive action between two entities. In competitive actions, there are governing systems, a concept that was modernized by Josh Nash beginning in the late 40's.
That being the case, I thought it was interesting/funny that you two were displaying his work
eastwoodnorris 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp especially since its attached to a video of him teaching others about those very concepts and theories. It made me laugh a little.

It's illogical for a person to be angry at the simple title of a video on YouTube regarding a person that neither of us know, when their response to that title is to call the poster, me - a person whom you do not know - an incredible number of names and insult his/her intelligence (something that is also searchable). It insinuates that you have different standards for how to treat someone based on something intangible.
donutdrinkp 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp All your comment above does is invite a "You started it" dialogue. Your very title not only pretends to know "the Real John Nash." It also rather flippantly calls him crazy. Change the title and watch the namecalling problem dissipate. If you can't understand that, you are, sorry to call you it, hopeless. I'll leave you to yours.
turtlecasserole 7 months ago

chailizard 7 months ago

DeanLoewen 7 months ago
Nash is referring to Diogenes of Sinope, a Greek philosopher and ascetic who praised virtue in the face of dishonest people. He's also the father of what's known as Cynicism. He goes on to make a cameo appearance in a very famous passage (125) in Nietzsche's Gay Science. In that role he claims, "God is dead," and waves a lamp in the faces of those who have killed Him, asking who among us can replace Him.
Nash isn't crazy. You're just an idiot. What were you doing at Brown?
turtlecasserole 7 months ago 3
@turtlecasserole I'm not the one who couldn't be bothered to read the video description before I pretended to know what I was talking about. The question is not about what was being talked about but in what context.
donutdrinkp 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp No, I read the description, several times, along with the title, so your arrogant presumptuousness reveals itself again. Not surprising since arrogance is the ugly matching bookend of ignorance. The life of Diogenes is no more a "tale" than is the life of Aristotle, except in Niet . And if context is so crucial, you should supply it in terms of video footage. As it is, there's nothing crazy seeming about this video, except your idiotic, dishonest compulsion to post it to youtube.
turtlecasserole 7 months ago
@turtlecasserole As to whether I could supply context through footage, I wish. This was all that survived of the lecture. Sad, considering how many hilarious asides he had including multiple involving Russian slurs and one hilarious one about cocaine. Perhaps, you ought to try to understand intention. The video was originally posted as a means to preserve it for myself. I Didn't expect many others to watch it. The title is incidental, the description is for posterity.
donutdrinkp 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp Fair enough w.r.t shortage of footage. But the intention still comes off as slanderous (a word that entails a sort of dishonest idiocy), if for no other reason than the mocking tone of the title, incidental or not. Plus Youtube is a public medium, not private. If you intended to preserve this as your own personal keepsake, why post the video here, a place where you're required, prima facie, to consider how posterity, perhaps "many others," will receive it when they watch it?
turtlecasserole 7 months ago
@turtlecasserole Because the way you and everyone else reacts to the video doesn't matter to me. The only reason I'm engaging you is because you seem to be reasonable, an assumption based 100% on the fact that your first rant was in coherent English.
donutdrinkp 7 months ago

turtlecasserole 7 months ago
@donutdrinkp Wrong. The correct answer to my question is: Because you are full of yourself. Which is to say, you're full of shit. 'w.r.t.'=with regard to. Look up 'prima facie' on your own. I don't see anything else that a reasonably educated person wouldn't be able to make sense of. Honestly--you do know what 'honest' means, don't you?--you can't understand my other comments? Then I ask again, What were you doing at Brown?
turtlecasserole 7 months ago
@turtlecasserole Man, my statement wasn't about your other comments. It was a complement about you're intelligible writing throughout. You read false intent into it. YouTube is full of idiots. I was saying you don't seem like one of them. I appreciate the brazen non sequitur, however. If you would like, feel free to insult me some more. God knows I don't care at all. But I invite you to rise above the endless hoards of YouTube trolls. You seem like a more decent human being than they are.

He has schizophrenia. His nonsensical speaking is the phenomenon known as "word salad." Instead of laughing at a highly intelligent man, I suggest you go and watch A Beautiful Mind. It's a simply amazing movie about him.
mickeymouse12678 9 months ago 26
@mickeymouse12678 The speech of schizophrenics though sometimes is interpreted by limited minds as "nonsense" or "insanity" is often very intelligent, connected and articulate. The problem is the person listening needs to be able to step outside the box of common communication. "Word salad"? Never heard the term but it's fitting I suppose.

@mickeymouse12678 Hah! "Go and watch A Beautiful Mind." You say that as though it's an accurate, unembellished depiction of his life. What's next, "watch Black Hawk Down if you want to know how it feels to be a soldier"?

Anti-Semitic? Russian hating? Like Goldsman remarked, most of Nash's colleagues were Jewish, and he is a paranoid schizophrenic living at the time of the Cold War. Those were the targets of cospiracy theorists at the time. He also sought political asylum in France and East Germany, and tried to renounce his USA citizenship (anti-american or simply ill?). Here, I see unproved allegations about his personal life presented as facts (for the record, he and his wife remarried in 2001... just saying).

@ChocolateExplosion
MrFrancoisBoucher 10 months ago
@MrFrancoisBoucher actually, your response reveals more about your frustrated attempts to sound intellectual than mine. I never mentioned his maths credentials.. instead said that taking the ideas of a paranoid schizophrenic, with a low opinion of his fellow man.. and applying them society wide.. has produced a society of paranoid people who have low opinions of each other.
ChocolateExplosion 10 months ago
@ChocolateExplosion oh, so you get your history from "the trap" by adam curtis? excellent docu btw..
