Thanks for uploading this time machine. I arrived here for my first time on CP-Rail in the early 70-s. The Canadian was rather short, as it was late October.
Later, in the 80's I rode the early VIA train into and out of Banff. It looked pretty much like this one.
ahhh.... that was the old VIA I remember. In fact I took this train in 83 from Brandon North to Vancouver. Funny how they were using the stainless steel cars for first class only back then. Now consider youself lucky.
@celica825 VIA Rail took over all of CP and CN's rolling stock and locomotives on January 1, 1978. This video is from 1982. CN's equipment was repainted first - obviously the CP locomotive had yet to berepainted. That's also why the train is a mixed consist - CP's cars were fluted stainless steel; CN's were smooth-sided.
this video is great, and i wonder...for ho scale, does anyone know the type of horn? this will help me in model railroading when i install the qsi revolution sound system. is it a nathan 3 chime ??
Via Rail made a really nice gesture a few days ago. A guy called Cyril Roy died on Vancouver Island back in November leaving his Alaskan Malamute, Fred without an owner. Via offered free passage for Fred back to Montreal where Roy was from. They also gave two free tickets to two people from Montreal that will accompany the dog. Kudos to Via.
Via Rail should get this back on the CPR route thru Revelstoke, Field, etc, but that damn private tour co., Rocky Mt.-ear is preventing that from happening, as they have HUGE political clout. Yes, this is wrong in a country such as Canada, but politicians can be bought, as they can anywhere! VERY sad this train runs on CN routing, rather than CP, where it belongs!
I Definatlly agree with you on that the Canadian doesnt look right on the CN line that line through Revelstoke needs VIA back on it it sure would bring alot more tourism back to Lake Louise and Banff if VIA was on that line again
Oddly enought, the private entity has always held the more scenic routing- back in '55 CN was a Crown corporation that lost money, and CP was a profitable private corporation
no more than public schools "lose" money (ie dont make a profit), or hospitals, or city transit.........passenger trains should be NO different ! Its a SERVICE !
@shnorth888 I have allways thought that 2 trains bring back the Super Contenental on the CN and run the Canadian on the CP where it Belongs not just the Rockey Mountaineer
I went from Truro to Montreal last november was all great except for the nightime, all they gave us was a thin blanket and a pillow, we had to stop at Metapedia to connect to the Gaspe train they turned off all power and heating in the passenger cars I never slept the entire night and when we got to Montreal i ended sleeping all that afternoon, next time..IM GETTING A SLEEPER!
@Intransitman Your right, the first class Via Train was killed off by a shit government & cut backs, plus the end of Conductor's and other Great Train Staff! Now a days it has somewhat come back on the Vancouver to Toronto Via. A friend took the trip and said it was very nice, food & service. You also have to tip big! But, it will never be the First Class of the CN & CP days.
@48alfaone Indeed, now CP wants to trash their line through the Ottawa River valley. There is so much asset stripping going on in Canada, it's disgusting!
@Intransitman unfucking believable so we have the largest Country in the world we have more people than ever and the most efficeient means of transport is cut down ?
Brings back memories, I use to run that train out of North Bay Ontario, we lost that train in 1990, government cut backs. To this day nothing sounds better then a 1400 series locomotive in 8 throttle. Thanks for posting.
I grew up in Chalk River, but I was just barely too young to remember the Canadian rolling through, or the old station. Thankfully, blueprints will help me reconstruct the entire scene in HO scale!
you used to be an engineer?, that awesome. my dad has worked for via rail for 25 years. So he has did shifts on the canadian as well as the super continental. he really didnt like it when the government cut back on the fundings which made via drop the scenic CPR route.

and no I am not calling this train the silver streak I know its the Canadian I was just being humerous the whistle reminded me of the one in the movie
Today's canadian runs only with Budd Stainless steel cars. The only NSC built cars still in service are in northern manitoba & all but one of the FP9s have been retired. Things have changed since back then.
...Do you know... Hinton, Alberta have been the site of a unfolding tragedy when the Super continental collide with a CN train: Killing 23 passengers and injury a hundred of them.
Ok but i was close. Oh yeah i think after the accident, they stopped serving Hinton as the Via super continental and did so with the canadian. i think thats why they stopped doing banff.
Or, more accurately, they cancelled "The Canadian" and re-named "The Super Continental" to "The Canadian". Via's thinking at the time was to keep operating as much as possible on the-then publicly owned CN right-of-way. But it would have been a PR disaster to cancel a train named "The Canadian". Eventually, they retired/scrapped/sold the NSC ex-CN fleet and refurbished the CP Budd cars.
my dad used to work on this line, he told me its more scenic than the current Cn line. I used to take Via rail, and i figured the CP rail line is has more epic scenery as compared to the CN line it operates.
Politics has always been a problem for rail operators as the Road Transport Lobby Groups have had plenty of power and the ear of politicians.Fuel prices are forcing many road operators to re think the economics of rail once again and here in Australia the big road transport groups have bought into rail and actually have their own freight/container trains.Rail operations is now open to all players who want to be involved without fear or favour. Amtrak play under different rules it seems.
Though that is just it with infrastructure, the big problem is politics, not economics. The street in front of your home is not being judged on a profit or loss basis to stay in existance.
From an Aussies point of view whatever happened to C.P. and "The Canadian".Looks like VIA took over and are using some of their great rollingstock from yesteryear.Canada appears to cherish their long long distance passenger trains more than their cousins just below.I hope that is not unfair comment.
hear in the U.S., politics is what's keeping Amtrak from running a great sevice. Also the fact that freight traffic has increased in the past few years is another factor. Yet despite that Amtrak still moves foward to a better future (I hope).
Amtrak gets next to nothing in funding. If you go McDonald's and buy a Big Mac, a fry & a drink. You have just spent more money then what Amtrak gets from you as a tax payer for the whole year!
I really miss the old F-Units and the old cars, I hear VIA still uses 1 FP9A for switchin cars in they're Vancouver yard. #6300 Great post, brings back alot of memories!!
I'd love to see a video of the old F's and FP's at speed with the Canadian or the Ocean. And I'm not talking 50 or 60 I mean upwards of 90 MPH like they used to run out on the prairies and between Montreal and Toronto.
Pretty much. Most of CN's cross-country sleepers were from the Super Continental; CP's fleet of Budd Cars came from the Canadian. Staggered consists like this were common while VIA upgraded the Budd cars for electrical heating and disc brakes. Correct. Externally, you can tell the difference between F7's/FP7's and F9's/FP9's by the flush headlights and the extra intake vents ahead of the front portholes.
VIA #1432 has flush headlights and extra intake vents ahead of the first portholes.
F9's, FP9's and FL9's were the only F-units to (originally) ever have those features. I found no evidence of VIA ever having an FP7 or F7B on their roster. So, #1432 is an FP9.
Canadian units differ from the traditional EMD spotting features. And if you'd checked your sources, you would have found VIA owned a whole bunch of ex CP FP7's in the 1400's, with ex CP 1405-1414 and ex CN 6500-6541 being the only FP9's. Easily-accessible roster data shows VIA 1432 being ex CP 1432/4041, Serial A245, built 1951.
What a video: great horn, F units, steam heat! Don't forget the mechanical bell - most of the crossing bells in my neck of the woods are electronic now :(

I hope your right. This FP7A loco (in the mid-1000's looks a bit bigger than the FP9A loco in the mid-6000's.)

Umm, FP7's and FP9's are the same size. But hey, if you don't believe roster info and facts, nothing I can do.

You can still see a couple of those old Via Rail F units parked at the CN rail yard near Toronto.

What a video: great horn, F units, steam heat! Don't forget the mechanical bell - most of the crossing bells in my neck of the woods are electronic now :(
