The slaughter houses in the US are closed thats to people like you, now guess what we have a failing horse industry and even more unwanted horses, there aren't enough resources to home and feed all of them nor enough space to "humanely" put to sleep horses and bury them which by the way costs astronomical amounts! Theres a market in the US for Beef Pork and Chicken right? Well guess what in other countries theres a market for horse meat. Just a fact of life. I think everything on both sides have been said except this. If the number of unwanted horses had ONLY increased because of the economic downturn, why hasn't Canada had an increase or unwanted or abandoned animals? We too went through a recession, not as bad as America but bad enough. There was no marked increase in abandonment cases since 2008. If it was just the economy that caused it we would see it in Canada as well.

The law to end slaughter in the US is a horrible way to solve the problem! Make a way to limit breeding, that is the real problem. People now are just shipping their horses to Mexico or Canada. Something that might help horse slaughter go down is me and my mom are getting lots of money soon and my mom said i can pick out 6 different horses each year from slaughter house nurise them back to health,train them if not broke,and give them away to little girls that want ponies for christmas :)

What most people don't know is that a large majority of these animals are brought to the stock yard already beaten, abused, and neglected. Its still in the US just not for human consumption. There are still plants that slaughter horses for dogmeat. I do have to admit that I not an anti slaughter person due to the lack of homes and money. I just wish there was a more humane way to do it.
The slaughter houses in the US are closed thats to people like you, now guess what we have a failing horse industry and even more unwanted horses, there aren't enough resources to home and feed all of them nor enough space to "humanely" put to sleep horses and bury them which by the way costs astronomical amounts! Secondly at least in the wild there is some fair balance, The meat industry is far worse, the horse is put through mass trauma.. unlike in the wild where there would (of course) be fear and death in a matter of moments, but the rest of its life it would be happy and FREE. A horse for slaughter will suffer horrid conditions for possibly its whole life with no chance of ever escaping!

If the number of unwanted horses had ONLY increased because of the economic downturn, why hasn't Canada had an increase or unwanted or abandoned animals? We too went through a recession, not as bad as America but bad enough. There was no marked increase in abandonment cases since 2008. If it was just the economy that caused it we would see it in Canada as well.

People who neglect their horses are generally hoarder/breeders who have become overwhelmed, or they're irresponsible horse owners. NONE OF THEM take their horses to auction, where they could be sold to a kill buyer - NONE! People would neglect their horses if there was a slaughter plant across the street. The law to end slaughter in the US is a horrible way to solve the problem! Make a way to limit breeding, that is the real problem. People now are just shipping their horses to Mexico or Canada. Congradufuckalations, you've accomplished absolutley nothing! ...except more suffering because the 30,000+ horses a year that were slaughtered here have to ride in a packed trailer for days and days to meet the same fate. Good job, keep popping out the babies though... cause they're cute...

Something that might help horse slaughter go down is me and my mom are getting lots of money soon and my mom said i can pick out 6 different horses each year from slaughter house nurise them back to health,train them if not broke,and give them away to little girls that want ponies for christmas :)

I'm for horse slaughter, but I am against how inhumane the horses are treated throughout the process. What most people don't know is that a large majority of these animals are brought to the stock yard already beaten, abused, and neglected. On some level, I believe these animals are better off dead if they are being treated in such a manor. I will never eat horse meat; however, I want condemn another culture for choosing to do so. I just want them take good care of in life and in death!!!

@wenafred You can't just give a horse away!!! Not only do you have to have land, but do you know what it cost a year to feed a horse? In this economy, people can't afford to take care of them!!! The shelters are having to euthanize horses because they are over run and can only handle so many at a time!!! People are not buying horses either because the horse industry crashed after slaughter houses were closed down!!! Average horse care cost run between $3,000 to $11,000 a year!!!

P.E.T.A hurt the horse industry when they closed down slaughter houses in America...because now people don't have a way of disposing of horses that are lame, sick, and hurt. @addblades1 we arent ignoring them. chickens cows and pigs were all bred and domesticated to be used as food and other nessisary materials. horses were not. horses were domesticated to be companions at work. to be used as a mode of transportation and to help humans get jobs done. last time i checked, i didnt see farmers riding pigs or chickens areound to help on their farm, or i didnt see a mounted police man riding a cow?

how is horse slaughter not okay, but, so many cows, sheep, chicken, etc are killed terribly every second? because horses are something we use, but in a different way than meat. We distract little kids with it, we ride them, we blahblahblah. Cows and chickens can be domesticated, but people think that they are idiotic, (which they are the opposite of,) so they sont have emotions, they were made for us to kill.

I still bye cage free eggs and stuff (not tlike thats always better) but i do need to eat meat because im already on a diet and i would drive my mom crazy. i do think that there should be restrictions on the way animals are treated before slaughter but i am for horse slaughter, i just wish they could be treated nicely before the actual slaughter. i do think that this treatment is terrible but horses are livestock like beef and swine so just because people think that these animals are beautiful this shouldnt change anything at all.many horses are dying of starvation because people cannot get rid of their horses when they cannot afford to feed them.

@bubbly221 you obviously know no facts about the horse industry before and or after the slaughter bill has passed. i am not saying that if a person cannot afford to feed a horse to just kill it but what i am saying is there is an abundance of starving horses now that people cannot get rid of them when an old or sick horse should be euthanised this costs money from the owner and if you cannot afford do euthanise the horse and nobody will take it how can u get rid of it humanely?

Its still in the US just not for human consumption. There are still plants that slaughter horses for dogmeat. I do have to admit that I not an anti slaughter person due to the lack of homes and money. I just wish there was a more humane way to do it.
