I've been meaning to go vegan but it's been hard because of my physique. I'm training to be a professional boxer and because of my size (6' 7", 240lbs, 4% body fat) I have to eat 5000+ calories a day to maintain weight. Sometimes more. Every time I try to go raw I'm literally force feeding myself to keep my energy up and it feels horrible. Not to mention it gets expensive. Is there a diet plan for people like me?
@geysergaeshi 5000cals a day? You would need 7000+ if you want to hit hard and stay in heavyweight class.
You want to be a pro athlete but dont want to spend $ putting the right fuel in? Thats like wanting to get fit but you dont want to get sweaty lol!
4% body fat as a heavyweight? Well you should put it up to 20% body fat so you have more mass and will be able to punch harder and take hits better. Get your BMI over 30 like all the pro guys.
@korvix You don't have to be a giant lump of muscle to have low body fat. It's the difference between working out for "looks" and working out to be functional. Excuse me Harley, I am a 17 year old male in Australia and have been vegan for 8 months and am bodybuilding. I was wondering, is it okay for me to be eating a diet a bit higher in nuts and seeds (is it ok to be getting more fat), in order to raise my testosterone levels a bit more?
@durianriders you may have already answered this but I watched a Paul Nison video and he said he did all of what you did and then he started feeling unwell and I don't know how he eats now ( and frankly I don't really care...) but why does he think you are heading for a fall?
@nyxs60 The first raw food book I ever read was from Paul Nison. 'Raw Life'. It got me started. An experienced raw fooder can see the mistakes Paul made. Just not enough cals, not enough sleep, not enough water.
Doesnt matter what you eat, if you dont get enough carb cals, your fucked! :(
Get a copy of Paul's book and see for yourself. Breatharianism aint a reality but those that think it is will ALWAYS feel guilty when they eat lol! Let alone eat enough!
Is there anyway to speed up weight-loss on 80/10/10? I am losing weight amazingly on a 3000 calorie diet on just fruit and juices, but its very slow. About .2-.3kilos a week. I want to lose 10kilos, so that's like a whole year to get down! I train for speed, not endurance, so i may be putting on some muscle mass though. I should probably just get over it, but any pointers would be much appreciated :)
as an athlet and raw vegan ..where do you get your sodium from...You excercise alot and burn alot of claories and water but which fruits or veges put the sodium back in?
@semiconscience1 all fruits and veg put it back in. Ive done the experiments. I do better on under 1000mg of sodium a day otherwise I cramp up in hot weather under high intensity.
If I eat only fruit/a little raw veggie and very small handul unsalted nuts each day do I have to worry about getting enough salt???? I am day 3 of Vegan-(yay!) thanks
Harley, I noticed you mentioned that not only should you eat low fat, but you should be low fat. I have been vegan (steamed & raw vegies, rice, oatmeal and occasional veggie burger) for over a year but I still have a lot of fat to lose. As I lose fat, am I not living off fat and clogging my arteries? Should I speed the process or take it slow?
**Also, what is the best source of raw vegan zinc?**
@cruciferousvegetable Let me know when you find a fat fruit or fat steamed rice based vegan. Ive never seen em. Im not talking newbies either. Im talking authorities in the movement. Have a look around.
low fat diet happens overnight. Low fat body takes time. Have 5 year goals.
@durianriders I am very slowly losing weight. In five years I will definitely be where I want to be. Even though I still have some olive oil and sesame oil, I don't eat nuts and I rarely eat avocado. I need to get more cardio to speed up the process.
I was hoping you could give me some guidance on zinc as it relates to lfrv. Do you have any favorite sources? Zinc supplements make me puke.
@cruciferousvegetable I would not advise to loose weight too fast. There are so many emotions connected to weight and I've seen too many people getting it back on just because of this. However one way I really lost it super fast one day was by consuming 3 days in a row long green beans blended with licorice tea, I was in toilet constantly. It was tooo fast!
@Helenelalala I know, I wanted harley to know what I am doing wrong, so he didn't have to pull it out with Q and A.
I have cut down on the rice. Veggie burgers are like crack to me but the place that I bought them at just switched to garden burgers so I won't go there anymore. The oatmeal is a zero fat, cheap, quick breakfast and lunch that I leave at work so I don't need to pack a lunch. I put warm water on it so it still is technically raw, right?
@cruciferousvegetable Maybe organic oat? I eat it and works good for me, but im not 100 % vegan yet (maybe 80-90%) as im trying to switch over from meat n pasta :]
@cruciferousvegetable the healthy sources of zinc are mostly brazil nuts, hazel nuts, almonds, peanuts and walnuts. Make sure they are not roasted or salted! Just soak a few hours them before eating them. Then parsley, sweet corn (non GMO!) then figs, apricots, apples, banana, dates, for ex.
@Helenelalala The oatmeal dramatically improved my ability to get a steady stream of calories and zinc. I think it really boosted my health. I did get out of control with the rice for a while. I started making it once a week and cutting it with napa cabbage now.
Fortunately, every restaurant that served veggie burgers was too cheap to continue buying the good ones after a recent price increase. They all switched to garden burgers and I just can't eat them. Too oily.
@Creamiie26 it depends. There was a time when veggies helped me a lot more than sweet fruits. When I ate sweet fruits I was getting weird cravings. So what got me out of cravings were veggies and sprouts. But a few months ago I started to eat mostly watermelons, cantaloupes, etc. for maybe 1-2 months and after that when I ate sweet fruits I was no more addicted to anything. Now I can eat any sweet fruit and feel so good. The key is to eat a lot in order to not be hungry for bad stuff
@123gwf alcohol does have mental negative actions, it puts back to present time past moments that are not easy to deal with. I would never drink again even just a bit if I want to keep the most of my awareness of myself and my surroundings. I wonder why there is soo much alcohol sales going on...
Hi Harley, You mention having steamed rice. I'm vegan but not raw vegan, and I eat boiled rice etc. But I thought YOU were raw vegan? Doesn't that mean you shouldn't eat steamed rice?
@AlexDarko1991 Well to be totally honest Im not 'raw' as I eat dried fruit, hot water dipped mangoes, frozen fruit, nuts and seeds & bottled juice. None of these items are technically '100% raw'.
Sure fresh fruit off the tree is the best ever but thesedays I prefer travelling and sharing the message vs living on a fruit orchard and foraging full time like I used to do.
I want people to have back up foods vs the 'all or nothing' style that gets people eating steak and chips 100% of the time.
Thanks for making the vid Harley! Its the same message over and over, but its RIGHT and CONSISTENT and we need to hear it over and over to get it through our heads! :p
This lifestyle really didn't work for me, i'd eat around 30 dates a day + tons of bananas, apples, pineapples, cucumbers, green smoothies, green juices, pomegranates, kiwi and more all organic. My energy would be great throughout the day but I've now added animal products back into my life and I feel twice as good but have still kept some fruit and a lot of veg. Please don't block me as I'm just a curious teen seeking health and knowledge.
@Mitchell9oh5 Health and knowledge doesnt come from consuming the milk, menstruation or flesh of another animal. WTF. If you really didnt feel good you should have done what Harley said here: carbed up on rice, potatoes whatever... as long as it´s not animal products. That´s seariously nasty. I´m a teen too seeking health and knowledge but I dont think I will get it from going back to being a baby and sucking on a cow´s tits. Grow up man.
Kenyan's also drink milk and eat some meat, stop cherry picking your data bro. Not everyone wants to be borderline anorexic skinny with low muscle mass, so to each his own. If you want to have a nice lean muscular physique, get some meat or fish and raw milk into your diet.
@Dysic way to make another comment with no facts to back your statement. You will not be skinny on a highcarb-low fat plant based diet (whether fruit or starches) if you work out to build muscle. There's plenty of protein. Raw milk? LOL no proof for that either. Harley runs and cycles and does not train upper body to build muscle as that isn't necessary for his sport. Now go read some real studies and stop nuthuggin your paleo gurus and weston a. price's cherry picked info.
@Dysic Yes the kenyans (i presume living in Kenya) eat meat and milk etc... where do they getthere meat from NOT from mass meat productions.. and they get enough excersise... You can't compare two different societies/cultures... If I went to a country like Kenya/Congo/Ghana etc they would force feed me becasue I'm being vegan ... I live in Europe where most of our animal products come from the mass industry The nature gave us a gift (we can eat animal) and we as the superior race arserape it...
@Dysic I train with some Kenyan runners here in Thailand. Its rice, sugar tea, fruit, corn, cous cous, soy milk and small bits of meat a few times a week. It works about to about 811 on average. We all have the same BMI.
If meat gave you muscles then how come I can out bench press 99.9% of the population and out cycle and out run them? I should be so sick that I would be bed ridden. lol!
Not sure about the bench pressing even if its true it doesn't say a lot since most people are fat and never exercise. How much can you bench and what do you weigh? Also, I gave the 80-10-10 raw vegan diet an honest go for around 6 weeks and it doesn't work for strength training. I noticed slower muscle gains (maybe even negative) and my recovery was slowed. Only positive I saw was a bit more energy+saving animals :) I seem to do better on a regular balanced diet.
@Dysic Then you were: a) not eating enough cals or b) seeing water-loss as muscle loss. When you go raw vegan you cut out a lot of the crap that your body had to dilute with water, so when you get rid of it the water goes and you look "smaller". You're just seeing how big your muscles really are bro. And if you were seeing strength loss that means a lack of calories/water/sleep. Good luck with the training
@Dysic I can bench my body weight 10 times. I dont know anyone that can run as fast as me that can do that? Do you.
'regular balanced diet' gives you 'regular diseases'. Be careful bro. Remember there are zillions of vegans out there that are bigger and stronger than you bro.
It all started when he met Jay Cordich, the Juice Man, and a few weeks later, Dr. John McDougall, whom challenged him to try a vegetarian diet. Lews became a vegan July 1990.
Lewis, although very successful on an omnivore diet (ate meat growing up mainly because his dad wanted it included in their meals), went vegan late in his career. He states, "My best performances were when I was 30 years old, a vegan."
I eat cream of rice (granulated rice mixed w/ boiling water) in the morning. Really satisfies my appetite. I also put some honey on top of it, or PURE maple syrup. What do you think about honey?
@b0ondockz Honey is bad for teeth. Too many digestive acids from the bees and pollens from toxic flowers that can cause swelling/inflammation in some people.
Want sweet? Eat fruit. The fact that we have to sweeten starches means that our body is crying out for fruit in that moment.
@AccidentalBroadcast Honey is nutritional garbage. High sugar, no fiber, low in vitamins, minerals, aminos, and omega fatty acids. Bees suffer. Your health suffers. Honey ain't vegan.
@RawFoodFreedom you are indoctrinated by your belief system just as many are. Honey is a powerful anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial substance. Take your blinders off and an even healthier perspective is to be discovered : )
@b0ondockz, If you're interested in sweeteners, then you may want to check out this video. It talks about the most nutritious to the least nutritious sweeteners. Honey and maple syrup have little if any, nutritional value. There are only two health promoting sugars: molasses and date sugar.
Look for "The Healthiest Sweetener" on Youtube, uploaded by NutritionFactsOrg.
I would put starches second, not juice. You're removing the fiber which is very important; lot's of nutrients as well. And it won't fill you up either. You'll just wind up being hungry again, since it digests so quickly. You'd be better off eating rice, potates, etc. over juice any day. The only time I use juice is to add liquid to a frozen fruit smoothie. I'll throw some frozen blueberries, bananas and strawberries in the blender and pour a little orange juice in to help it blend.
You may be familiar with the Tarahumara indians in Mexico. If not, they are some of the world's, best runners. They come up to the states on occasion and win marathons back to back barefoot. They're also some of the longest living people on earth. They're mostly vegan and live mainly on corn and chia seed. They run everywhere they go, 50 miles a day or more no problem. I make chia cookies and a few will have you feeling like the Hulk in no time. Love all your videos, thanks for all the info.
@rubbernecker13, Yes, my friend read a book called "Born to Run" and those people are featured in there. Also, Ultramarathon runner Scott Jurek spent some time with them. I met Scott Jurek in October and it was quite the inspiration to continue to be on a plant-based diet and be athletic.
Someone told me u need to eat healthy fat for hormonal reasons like testosterone activation or something like that so what do you think? Does eating low fat affect my health and hormones?
@philluhp thanks for that. I queried it as I have weight issues and since increasing carbs so has my weight. I am relatively fit so some may be muscle but the scales say my internal body fat has also increased :( I'm sure it's not the fruit actually but I am not fully on the 80/10/10 so my body may be rejecting all the other crap. You're probably right, I need to give it time, but I've been a serial dieter all my life and so putting on weight scares the hell out of me! Will let you know ;)
@durianriders. Does it matter what age you are for the amount of carbs? I don't feel I can eat as much now as when I was in my 20s, so I wouldn't want to overdo this.
@nyxs60 It's literally impossible to eat too many carbs. Your body will slowly adjust overtime if you start to give it what it needs. Your ability to eat more carbs will go right up along with your energy levels. Promise. =]
There is a video here on YouTube called "Gorillas Going Green", It show how Gorillas on a high fruit diet where getting heart disease and having behavioral problems like pulling out there hair and eating it. When they switched there diet to mainly greens it cure all the problems. What's up with that?
@dinos98 Your wrong bro. You need to carb up and watch the vid again. They were feeding the gorillas pet biscuits!! lol! High in animal products, fat and refined sugar. Gorillas are low fat eaters. Like humans, when you put em on high fat, they get fucked up hearts.
Fucking morons putting wild animals on processed diets to save money and time.
Sup Harley -- what if you have to ride in a plane all day? High energy would not be good in that situation. I'd eat fat to lower my energy in that situation.
Awesome man. You, Dan the man, and Dr. Robert Morse are the three that got me off the Wolfe, Vitalis, etc. kick, and helped me realize that rather than getting all the expensive dehydrated superfoods, it's all about fresh fruit, detox, and simplicity. Love it Harley!
eat corn?!!? it's one of the most poisonous foods on the planet! The reason cows are so sick and have to be pumped full of antibiotics is due to their corn-fed diet. One of the reasons why humans are so sick and fat is from the corn syrup added to nearly every product you can find in a supermarket and is one of the leading causes of diabetes. Suggesting people eat it is the shittiest diet advice I've ever heard and it's a pity it came from you.
@smurfieboo since when have people gotten fat from eating pure, natural, non GMO corn? "one of the most poisonous foods on the planet", yeah right! so go and eat your eggs and bacon, your pizza, your stake, your ice cream, chocolate etc... but STAY AWAY FROM CORN!!! lmao!
@thatfruitarianchick I personally do not think corn is healthy for humans or any other animal even in its natural state which is far from saying ice cream is better. Wow you're an idiot. You can eat all natural foods without thinking all natural foods are good for you, which is what I meant. Oh no, that must mean I replace corn with pizza!!! Er, anyone ever said you think in extremes?
@smurfieboo I didnt think in extremes... lol. You claimed that corn is fattening, which I replied to by saying that it isnt. I didnt say corn is the best thing for you, I said it´s not going to be making you fat. Thats it. Who´s the idiot, man? You cleary didnt understand what I said. Geez, get a pair of glasses or something. Pizza, ice cream, steaks, burgers, burritos, chocolate, chips are making people fat, not corn. That´s all I said.
@thatfruitarianchick I didn't say corn makes you fat, wow you're dense. I said that it's bad for the body.as it contains gluten. There are other reasons apart from fat why people should avoid certain foods. You clearly have an annorexic mentality.
@thatfruitarianchick is calling yourself a "fruitarian" a cutesy way of hiding your disease? I'm vegan but sadly, most of the vegan chicks I meet are EXACTLY LIKE YOU, oh and they're also fat.
@smurfieboo By the way, get your facts straight before you claim some ridiculous crap... I agree corn is not optimal and i would much rather eat fruit, but corn is NOT fattening. You are very very misinformed or just clueless. Sigh, the idiots I share this planet with...
@thatfruitarianchick you know what's really funny? From saying "corn is poisonous" you assumed I meant fattening. Haha, just shows your annorexic mentality.

Advice will be much appreciated!

@durianriders you may have already answered this but I watched a Paul Nison video and he said he did all of what you did and then he started feeling unwell and I don't know how he eats now ( and frankly I don't really care...) but why does he think you are heading for a fall?
nyxs60 2 months ago

@jezzieBell05 10kg of what? Fat, salt retention, bone, skin, hair, blood, lymph, muscle?
Focus on health & fitness vs some random number on the walmart scale.
One can be quite overweight and still be a gold medal power athlete.

as an athlet and raw vegan ..where do you get your sodium from...You excercise alot and burn alot of claories and water but which fruits or veges put the sodium back in?
semiconscience1 2 months ago
@semiconscience1 all fruits and veg put it back in. Ive done the experiments. I do better on under 1000mg of sodium a day otherwise I cramp up in hot weather under high intensity.

**Also, what is the best source of raw vegan zinc?**
cruciferousvegetable 2 months ago
@cruciferousvegetable Let me know when you find a fat fruit or fat steamed rice based vegan. Ive never seen em. Im not talking newbies either. Im talking authorities in the movement. Have a look around.
low fat diet happens overnight. Low fat body takes time. Have 5 year goals.
durianriders 2 months ago
@durianriders I am very slowly losing weight. In five years I will definitely be where I want to be. Even though I still have some olive oil and sesame oil, I don't eat nuts and I rarely eat avocado. I need to get more cardio to speed up the process.
I was hoping you could give me some guidance on zinc as it relates to lfrv. Do you have any favorite sources? Zinc supplements make me puke.
cruciferousvegetable 2 months ago
@cruciferousvegetable I would not advise to loose weight too fast. There are so many emotions connected to weight and I've seen too many people getting it back on just because of this. However one way I really lost it super fast one day was by consuming 3 days in a row long green beans blended with licorice tea, I was in toilet constantly. It was tooo fast!
Helenelalala 2 months ago
@Helenelalala That would do it I bet! Yea, I like to lose no more than 2-3 lbs a week. It sucks no matter how you do it. Thanks for the advice.

It keeps me full and has a ton of zinc.
cruciferousvegetable 2 months ago
@Helenelalala I went to your channel and saw your vid. Would you tell me what your top three sources for zinc are on the LFRV diet?
I use Cron-O-Meter and I have found a few cooked vegan sources, but I just can't find raw vegan sources of zinc. Please fill me in.
cruciferousvegetable 2 months ago
@cruciferousvegetable Maybe organic oat? I eat it and works good for me, but im not 100 % vegan yet (maybe 80-90%) as im trying to switch over from meat n pasta :]
chaotisms 2 months ago
@cruciferousvegetable the healthy sources of zinc are mostly brazil nuts, hazel nuts, almonds, peanuts and walnuts. Make sure they are not roasted or salted! Just soak a few hours them before eating them. Then parsley, sweet corn (non GMO!) then figs, apricots, apples, banana, dates, for ex.
Helenelalala 2 months ago
@Helenelalala The oatmeal dramatically improved my ability to get a steady stream of calories and zinc. I think it really boosted my health. I did get out of control with the rice for a while. I started making it once a week and cutting it with napa cabbage now.
Fortunately, every restaurant that served veggie burgers was too cheap to continue buying the good ones after a recent price increase. They all switched to garden burgers and I just can't eat them. Too oily.

wait so are fruits better than veggies? why?
Creamiie26 2 months ago
@Creamiie26 fruit contains almost no vitamins compared to greens!
rui27marne 2 months ago

AlexDarko1991 2 months ago
@AlexDarko1991 Well to be totally honest Im not 'raw' as I eat dried fruit, hot water dipped mangoes, frozen fruit, nuts and seeds & bottled juice. None of these items are technically '100% raw'.
Sure fresh fruit off the tree is the best ever but thesedays I prefer travelling and sharing the message vs living on a fruit orchard and foraging full time like I used to do.
I want people to have back up foods vs the 'all or nothing' style that gets people eating steak and chips 100% of the time.

My energy would be great throughout the day but I've now added animal products back into my life and I feel twice as good but have still kept some fruit and a lot of veg. Please don't block me as I'm just a curious teen seeking health and knowledge.

Kenyan's also drink milk and eat some meat, stop cherry picking your data bro. Not everyone wants to be borderline anorexic skinny with low muscle mass, so to each his own. If you want to have a nice lean muscular physique, get some meat or fish and raw milk into your diet.
Dysic 2 months ago
@Dysic way to make another comment with no facts to back your statement. You will not be skinny on a highcarb-low fat plant based diet (whether fruit or starches) if you work out to build muscle. There's plenty of protein. Raw milk? LOL no proof for that either. Harley runs and cycles and does not train upper body to build muscle as that isn't necessary for his sport. Now go read some real studies and stop nuthuggin your paleo gurus and weston a. price's cherry picked info.
82Bdog 2 months ago
@Dysic Yes the kenyans (i presume living in Kenya) eat meat and milk etc... where do they getthere meat from NOT from mass meat productions.. and they get enough excersise... You can't compare two different societies/cultures... If I went to a country like Kenya/Congo/Ghana etc they would force feed me becasue I'm being vegan ... I live in Europe where most of our animal products come from the mass industry The nature gave us a gift (we can eat animal) and we as the superior race arserape it...
mistoutchique 2 months ago
@Dysic I train with some Kenyan runners here in Thailand. Its rice, sugar tea, fruit, corn, cous cous, soy milk and small bits of meat a few times a week. It works about to about 811 on average. We all have the same BMI.
If meat gave you muscles then how come I can out bench press 99.9% of the population and out cycle and out run them? I should be so sick that I would be bed ridden. lol!
Follow your heart and logic bro. Not dogma.
durianriders 2 months ago
@durianriders
Dysic 2 months ago
@Dysic Then you were: a) not eating enough cals or b) seeing water-loss as muscle loss. When you go raw vegan you cut out a lot of the crap that your body had to dilute with water, so when you get rid of it the water goes and you look "smaller". You're just seeing how big your muscles really are bro. And if you were seeing strength loss that means a lack of calories/water/sleep. Good luck with the training
greg6ft6 2 months ago
@Dysic I can bench my body weight 10 times. I dont know anyone that can run as fast as me that can do that? Do you.
'regular balanced diet' gives you 'regular diseases'. Be careful bro. Remember there are zillions of vegans out there that are bigger and stronger than you bro.

A bit about Carl Lewis:

What do you think about honey?
b0ondockz 2 months ago
@b0ondockz Honey is bad for teeth. Too many digestive acids from the bees and pollens from toxic flowers that can cause swelling/inflammation in some people.
Want sweet? Eat fruit. The fact that we have to sweeten starches means that our body is crying out for fruit in that moment.
durianriders 2 months ago 3
@durianriders RAW honey has a multitude of benefits for the body. Take a teaspoon, you don't have to chew it and you're good to go.
AccidentalBroadcast 2 months ago
@AccidentalBroadcast Honey is nutritional garbage. High sugar, no fiber, low in vitamins, minerals, aminos, and omega fatty acids. Bees suffer. Your health suffers. Honey ain't vegan.
RawFoodFreedom 2 months ago
@RawFoodFreedom you are indoctrinated by your belief system just as many are. Honey is a powerful anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial substance. Take your blinders off and an even healthier perspective is to be discovered : )
AccidentalBroadcast 2 months ago

I'll throw some frozen blueberries, bananas and strawberries in the blender and pour a little orange juice in to help it blend.

eat corn?!!? it's one of the most poisonous foods on the planet!
