  • hey man what synths and machines did you use in reason and how did you go about making them?

  • Does the sp just run off of USB? Then can you save onto cards? Does it have built in sounds?

  • @danfromphoenix No, it does not run off USB. The CF card is the only means of file transfer other than live audio recording. It has 12 built in sounds that cannot be erased, on pad A.

  • @MusicMyBlanket they can be erased

  • i need to know witch cf card is fastest for sp 404 thanks

  • really like this.

It's good to see the non hip-hop side of the sp-404, (or the euphoric trance stuff).

A few people have mentioned that the speed of loading/ converting samples is an issue with these (epecially with the fact it uses it's own proprietry format). is that true?

    Keep up the good work!

  • @aliebi It's not an issue. It can take a bit to "upload' samples from the CF card onto the sampler, but never an issue. Appreciate the comment, I also like the euphoric electronic stuff on other people's vids!

  • ITS GOOD - I LIKE

  • Very nice!

  • nice track man. keep it up.

  • Is it very good at manipulating sounds with this 404? coz ive seen a fair few videos and havent seen that much manipulating and distorting beyond what the sound originally sounded like. Also is it as good or better than computer software?

  • It has 29 different effects which will manipulate the sound in some way. You can some really experimental sounds with things like pitch shift, ring modulator, distortion, delay... You can even reverse samples, effect them, and reverse again for added fun. It isn't better or worse than computer software. It has it's own set of parameters which are unique to it, as each piece of cpu software is unique. Reverb on a sp404 is different than on ableton, or reason, or sonar or audiomulch.

  • The SP-404 is good for live performances and recorded songs, allthough im getting an SP-404 and im planning on making the samples in FL Dtuio on my computer and you the SP-404 to experiment in loops and live stuff and testing, but i would make the recorded song in Fl Studio

  • @DJCRISIS111 Nice, sounds like a good plan. Try any number of combos, results are indefinite.

  • @MusicMyBlanket Lol yer it's a good machine. :)

Sorry for my bad english back then... don't know why lolz.

  • Hey can you tell me if the 404 allows samples to be placed onto the pads - ie, taken from a cd or computer and transferred to the pads ??

  • you can sample from any audio source eg: TV, ps3, computer, anything with RCA out.

  • thankyou shirkthejerk

  • yeah, u get a CompactFlash card then get a Compact Flash card reader which connects to ur PC through USB.

  • Thankyou GamerConor, big help ta.

  • sounds great mate, peace!

  • Thanks, and peace!

  • I just got a SP555 and it doesn't have a flash card in it at the moment. I know how to sample but the manual doesn't not mention how to store a sample to a pad in a BANK on the internal storage. So if I power off, I lose everything. Anyone know how to do this?

  • i guess you really need that flashcard to save your projects

  • i admire your ingenuity! do you know of any good resources for learning how to integrate home-made samples into Reason from the sp-404??

  • Thank you :D No, reason is not a workstation that permits use with sound files. It's only a synth rack. You tube has good vids on Reason though.

  • nicely well done...

    luv it so much...

    feel so trippin' ..awesome...

  • ..you arent even using the 404 in time withthe video.

  • I like this video :)

  • cool

  • *Deletes Virtual DJ*

    *Orders this*

  • thank you!!

  • i use reason, and im thinking of getting the 404, how do you take your reason sounds on to the 404??

  • you will need to export your clips from reason and load them on to the 404 via compact flash card.

  • nice song. What does it mean when the pads are flashing? Does that mean that all of those loops are playing?

  • The flashing is from the pattern sequencer. Only the solid button is playing a sequence which I recorded earlier. I think I used 4 or 5 short sequences to lay out this simple track.

  • there might be a away..

if you put cables in line out and connect them with your LINE IN in your computer,

then use a program like virtual DJ and set in virtual dj settings that you have a line in and just start recording .

    it worked for my kaossilator

    /watch?v=I5HI9mknEFs

  • how do you record and save a live performance?

  • There is no way to record an entire performance on sp404. I usually use Soundforge on my PC to record live performances.

  • Nice ;) VESY nice!

I have a question for you - is sp404 able to sample from external sources while playing phrase? Or when you want to sample from mic, for example, you have to stop loops you're playing.

  • you can play external sources and play phrases. For example, I can play guitar or synth through this and also trigger samples.

  • sorry, I deleted your comment. No, it is not possible to record on the fly while triggering. SP404 can do one or the other, but not simultaneously.

  • Hiya "MusicMyBlanket".. I'm new to these effects units - is it possible to upload your own sounds onto the Compact Flash card, and then onto your SP 404? Thanks very much!

  • yes, you can upload your own sounds. just save as a .wav and drop it on to the CF card. Then, use a button sequence to upload the sounds to your sp-404. It's quite simple, hope this helps!

  • Really helpful, shame about the price! thanks bud

  • Shame? It's a real steal for what it offers! You might want to look into a second hand one as they sometimes go for 200$. It's really worth the money as it's much more than an 'effects box', it's a quite powerful sampler.

  • so this definitely syncs with Reason? or did you have to produce then send it to your sp404?

  • I produced four loops on Reason, exported them as .wavs, loaded them on to SP and played it with the pattern sequencer.

You could sync it to Reason since it has a MIDI in port, but that is not happening in this video.

  • that's a shame. i like midi. i still like the sp404's features but i'm looking for something that'll pretty well do everything the 404 can plus midi...i'm on the college budget and hardware is difficult to come by at fair prices....

if you have any other reccomendations that would be pretty rad.

    thanks though

    keep the art in music

    peace

  • yeah, I actually haven't done many songs like this one. I usually record loops from my microkorg, SY77, guitar or even drums.

I could do a video and demonstrate the midi triggering if you were interested.

    Thanks for your kind words.

  • reason does not sync external devices, you would have to make Reason sync to the sp-404 but since the sp-404 has no midi out that is not possible. I know because i tried it for 2 hours with my sp-404 before punching a hole in the wall and finding out in a forum that Reason does not send out MIDI beat clock.

  • are you using anything besides this sampler to make this music

  • yes. I have arranged four melodies/rhythms in Propellerhead's Reason 3.0. I then saved those samples as .wav files and loaded them onto this sampler. I then played the samples only using the SP-404, routing it into a mixer and onto my computer.

  • so does this sampler come with any good pre recorded sounds or do have to upload theem all? thanks

  • it doesn't come with anything good. also, you can't upload unless you buy an extra compact flash card.

you don't have to upload though, it has a microphone and line in ports, say if you want to record a guitar or a keyboard.

  • how do afford all that software

  • sooooooo, i just bought mine. im stoked. three long days and i will have it. finally. this song rocks. video is sweet too. props to roland man. love it. smoke. period. bye.

  • sweet, you're joining the 404 community! glad u like the song n' video too :D

perhaps you can post a video with some of your music once you've got some samples to work with... good luck!

  • i absolutely will. i kind of did things in reverse. ive been looking at different models of samplers for a while now, all the time collecting loops and samples on my software. i purchased a few sound banks and drumkits, then chose this sp. as soon as i get accustomed to the piece i will post my first recording session=hell, might be great comedy at least.

  • just out of interest are you playing this thorugh an amp

  • This is running directly into my computer's sound card, an EMU 0404.

  • No you can't, my band is starting to use samplers too and we have the 404 and you need a seperate metronome. and for the people below the 404 has 12 note polyphony but that means you can only play six samples at once if you are playing them in stereo... myspace com/Ubiquitousonline

  • I was thinking about getting this sampler for live use for my band. I was wondering though, can you have the metronome ran through headphones for, say, a drummer to hear exclusively so as he were to play perfectly in time with it?

  • hey man you seem to know what your talking about and reply to comments so i was wondering

can you loop say a drumtrack from a sample

then add in a melody in a loop

or can you only have oneloop going at once ?

hope to hear from you :)

  • hey thefsas. that is exactly what is happening in the video. I am using the pattern sequencer to loop two drum loops, a bass synth, and a lead synth. This video has four samples going at once, and, as pointed out by miker2048 below, it has 12 note polyphony, or 12 samples going simultaneously.

Request a video from me if you wish, regarding what you would like to see.

  • the sp-404 has 12 note polyphony...

  • yes, thank you... was thinking of the mK :D

  • couple of Q's mate, cause I'm thinking of getting one!

Firstly, can you get like 5 or more of the samples playing at once?

    and,

do all the samples stay in time? So if for example, you had a beat and a melody. You stopped the melody for a couple of seconds then re-started it, would it come in at teh right time with the beat?

  • nice.

  • ever synced the 404 to a midi clock ?

    I`ll get mine coming week .... :-)

  • I've haven't tried that yet- plenty of untapped power there!

Maybe you could post a video incorporating midi.

  • whoa trippin!

  • i have a 1gb compacflash full-bank in one backup with my old downtempo songs making with reason...and i use in some sets, is great 4 me too! my respects!

  • Thanks Vivi! Hook me up with some of your older music :D
