Look up Belegarth or Dagorhir. I'm pretty sure this one is Belegarth, but Dagorhir is exactly the same thing, minus one or two insignificant rules.

Find out if there's a group near you and go give them a visit!

Actually in Dagorhir you do hit each other with foam swords and actually if you can get into the idea of it then its pretty cool my biggest point is simply that they have hundreds of people fighting just like a real battlefield only you wont die lol

Ya SCA is like this only like i said in this they use foam swords in what i gather about SCA they use wood and they heavily protect themselves

I would imagine the SCA is pretty expensive, but the weapons we use for this sport are cheap and easy to make. Thus, I like this more than the SCA.

some groups have different rules. My Boffer or amtgard group doesn't always use the limb loss rule. We use a three hit rule, where if you get hit three times anywhere you die. No losing arms or legs.
