Another downside was the heat. Most of the heat caused by the charge used to be expended with the cartridge in conventional rifles. The G11 did not have this ability due to the caseless ammo and was prone to overheat.

the US military didn't want it because of the costs of the weaponsystem and the new ammunition type (and probably because colt would've thrown a fit should the US army decide to make their main assault rifle something that isn't colt)

the fieldtests the US army conducted on the g11 never had the goal of replacing the M16.... the g11 was merely meant as an example of what future weapons of the US army could look and handle like

@TheMohawkNinja well the AN-94 has to do the ejection cycle of each shell by opening the bolt after each shot. the G-11 doesnt have a bolt but some sort of cylinder thing and no empty shells to eject, just bullet to spit out at enemies

-the weapon is much more water- and dustproof as the AK47(!)

-can penetrate a NATO steel helmet up to 600m.

IN SINGLE SHOTS:

-extremely accurate up to 600m.

IN 3 ROUND BURST MODE (2000 rpm):

-up to 100 m the first and the second round hit the same hole and the third hits very close to them

-when firing at a human torso in the realistic combat range of 300-400 m there is a great chance to hit the target with every 3 fired bullet

The main reason of failure was the reunification of Germany. That is why the Bundeswehr didn't have money to adopt this rifle. They went to the easier way and searched an assault rifle chambered in 5.56x45 to adopt (some say the USA forced this). They choose the G36 from the following competing rifles: HK G36, HK G41, Steyr AUG and the Wieger STG-940.

higher accuracy was.. caseless ammo was merely a means to achieve that

in order to increase accuracy in burst fire heckler and koch decided to increase the rate of fire

caseless ammunition allowed for a higher ROF so heckler and koch had new ammunition developed

whether the US had any hand in its cancellation i don't know but i doubt it

The cartridges in the magazine are completeley separated from the firing chamber in the firing momentum, and in every momentum, except in the loading momentum of course. The fire from one cartridge can't even burn the surface of an other cartridge, only if it burns the "primer" but the primers are facing towards the upper wall of the magazine of the G11 rifle.

It had cookoff problems in the late seventies when it was first entered the NATO trials BUT!!! it had not cookoff problems when entered the ACR programme in around 1990. Furthermore I don't think that any manufacturing problems can happen in the age of CNC and PLC machines!

During the U.S. Army and Bundeswehr tests it was also obvious that the newbies can learn the handling and cleaning of this weapon much easier compared to the HK G3, or the M16.

To clean the HK G11, it only has to be field-stripped to 5 big parts, compared to the M16 (with 8 or 10 parts I can't remember exactly).

The inner mechanism is very dirty after shooting a few thousand rounds but despite this(!), it was found to be a very reliable weapon.
