I think I know why Donovan is overrated. It's the same deal with Cloud and Sephiroth: big swords. Weapons don't make the man/woman. It's the man/woman wielding the weapon.
Seriously, they get rid of a kick-ass werewolf which, I assume, knows some form of Martial arts, for some stereotypical vampire hunter. Trust me, if you want to find a person who hates stereotypes, I'm one of them.

Donovan's poplar cause he can call on those giant spirit guys to set on people and have his sword attack on one side while he punches on the other.
Not that I disagree with you, about Capcom making a clone of him, I'm not a fan of clones.
