This sounds like the 'Caught Live Plus Five' version of this song. The sound quality of the live sections of the album is poor. They really have improved the live sound over the years.
@london2z yea same concert tour as live plus 5 they always opened with gypsy when they performed at the fillmore east they added one new song question
A sense of life when it was whole. Dank u well. Just to tollow the train of thought, Justin Hayward was the probably the hottest guy I've even seen. Still lookin good is right. Then again I wouldn't care if he looked like a frog. I love the Moody Blues.
Damn!! Justin looks so freakin Hot!!!! I could just eat him up!! That man just oozes sex appeal!! He had it all wrapped up into one package for days!! I love The Moody Blues!! They are as awesome today as they were back then!! They are truly timeless!! What a band and what a time!! The Moody Blues forever!!!!
Even a bad recording of the moody blues sounds better than most bands today- some can't even play any instruments. They think if they have a turntable and a microphone that that qualifies them as a musician....hahaha This band is perfect.
Yeah, and that's why music now is just so wonderful. Because of the presence of Simons, who insure nothing but flawless "quality" music reaches the deaf ears of the public, beaten to pulp by mechanical drums and pitch correction software.
I love The Moodies! Agreed Justin 'made' them what they are today & then. Justin is so great! John is an excellent bass player! Both of them are very underrated. The whole band is.Funny tho, in this clip Justin sings the verses out of order from the original...41 years later he forgets the words to the last line of the 2nd verse, more than once on their recent tour (2009).First time they have played Gypsy since way back, Makes you wonder if Justin has a mental block on this.Still a vavorite!!!!

Obviously the tape from which this was recorded was warped. Justin's voice back then was magnificent. John was always (and continued to be) a bit "pitchy" when he did the high notes, but this is more so than normal. You can tell it's the tape because the flute sounds so awful, too! Not complaining, just explaining to those who are criticizing the vocals.
Ray seemed more engaged back in this period of time. That's what strikes me the most. And agreed--Justin's vocals have definitely improved over time from back during this period.
Great vintage Moodies clip. John's vocals seem a bit flat though. The keyboard player is definitely Mike Pinder. If you look carefully you can catch a brief glimpse of him.
I prefer the studio version, others like this one cause of the sound of the melotron rather than the guitar but John Lodge should've modulate his pitching singing a bit. Anyway it's too late to tell him that, 39 nine years ago now.
Hi everybody. I'm 99% sure that the mysterious keyboard player is Robert 'Bobby' Lamb from the group Chicago. They've always been good friends. Look up old Chicago pics and I think you'll agree!
Probably my favorite MB tune right here. For some reason I really enjoy this more "raw" live sound of the Moodies to their more manicured live albums following Caught Live +5. Either way they've always been friggin great imo.
I have always wondered why this song wasn't a big hit for the Moodies. I have always thought that this is the perfect Moody blues song, it has all the elements of what a Moody blues song should have. I rank it up there with "Nights in W.S." and all there other hits. I especially love the beginning of this song, very atmospheric and foreboding. They should've used it for the shot where the Apollo rocket takes off, in the Tom Hanks movie, "Apollo 13".
It's too haunting to be a hit. it's a great song.
In fact, for those who are big Hayward fans his songs get deep into you. Like "Watching and Waiting". Justin thought that one should have been a hit. But it was WAY too beautiful and the lyrics, well, it's a powerful song.
I loved their "Strange Times" when they did it in NYC in 1999. A better version than the recording.
I hear you, but I would say that they lucked out in finding Justin Hayward and John Lodge as well. I like Lodge's songs, but sometimes that high voice he sings in is a bit too "forced", or just plain annoying. Love the Moodies anyway, saw them in October of 1999, they were great. Ray was still with them.
Hello berrygirl1964, I realized you are a really busy suuuuuuperfan of MB and specially of John.
I noticed that there is also a second unknown person at drums, in the middle of 1:53 standby. Maybe this fact was discussed before, but there seem to be two members of another band mixed in.
I'm a man I suppose, but I'm melting away with the MB as you...
I think it's that John sings too loud into the mic. I've noticed this from a lot of live shows; his falsetto is better suited to the background sound. It's not his fault either, he probably can't hear himself on the loud stage. I know that happens to me and Mike When our band plays and we can't hear ourselves, so I make it practice to wear one earplug. That way I can hear myself better and not lose the total sound
@Kevtheguitarist when he sings those high notes they call that the angel choir effect like sand on lovely to see you they probaly use a lot of vocal overdubs on the record live forget it they use 2 girl background singers live in later years
We did a bit of digging and think that they might be Keith Emerson (keyboards)and Carl Palmer (drums). I read that Emmerson, Lake & Palmer played the festival on the saturday and Moody Blues played the sunday. What a line-up. Too bad I don't have a time machine.
This is a great ducument of their best times (and the beginning of mine, too;-). I like this worn whimpering and moaning recording quality, just in correspondence with it's positioning and my emotional condition. Thanks for that !!
Thanks for posting these videos. I didn't get to see them in concert in the 70s when I was a teenager, but I went to my first Moodies concert in the 80s and took my daughter, who became a huge Moody fan. I love seeing this old footage. It's like reliving my youth.
They really were on a musical adventure at this time.
I really feel that their output over the years could have been so much more really. Justin has one of those voices that stands out above everyone else for it's passion, it's soul searching qualities etc. Saw them in London this past week once again. Still as unique as ever.
well it is a loss shared by all - pinder said he left because he wanted to be with his family - i have transcripts from an chat room where he said exactly that - i am so sorry but those 5 guys had some kind of electric energy (something not seen but felt) - they all fed off of each other and created some of the worlds best music - when Mike left then TMB as we knew it, was no more....41 years later - they were so far ahead of themselves with On the threshold of a dream album - the all time best.
I've read interviews with Justin where he talked -without being specific- about some very harsh words traded when Pinder left the band and he couldn't see any circumstance where he'd be welcomed back.
The first time I saw the Moodies was in Hollywood, Florida in the early 70s. They began the show with "Gypsy." If this isn't from that concert I'll bet it's from the same tour though.
Huh??? I know they experimented but I never heard anything like that. I met Mike a few years ago and he seems pretty together. He quit the band to raise his family but now I think he'd go back if the guys wanted him.
Check the several recorded interviews from the members. They all said it "did his head in" pretty bad too. He could not tour for mental reasons. I would not expect it is an issue 30 plus years later but he has to date never toured and he had been asked. Unless the band lies? Peace
Pinder said the reason he quit the band is because he didn't want to tour anymore. What do you mean he has never toured, "to date?" Prior to the band's Hiatus, in the 70s, he toured many times, including the time I saw them open with "Gypsy." I assume that you mean he hasn't toured since his "LSD days," right?
ooops! I AM "mttx" and didn't realize I was logged in under my other username when I replied to harnwinkie. (not that it matters.) Both times that I saw the Moody Blues with Mike Pinder performing, they played, "Are you sitting Comfortably" all the way through, to the end of the album. (On the Threshhold of a Dream) Very memorable indeed.
Their band is extremely documented. Pinder quit, not simply because he "didn't want to "tour". He was a mess from earlier drug use and fan reaction to the band. He quit in 1972. When did he ever tour since then? I am not aware although I do not follow them since the mid 80s. Thanks
Oh, O.K.... it sounded as if you may be saying he NEVER toured. Perhaps drug use did contribute to his decision to actually quit touring. But I have always read, or heard, that he quit the band because he didn't want to tour anymore. The only reason, I'm aware of, is that that Mike wanted to be with his there, for his family, while his kids were growing up.
Your welcome creakyneck, I'm a BIG fan of the Moody Blues and Justin Hayward. I wanted to share some of the stuff that I have hoping that others would do the same. :) And some have and I want to thank them for that. I don't get to see the Moodies in concert as much as I would like to, so the video's are all I have to see. again thanks for your comment.
Listening to this is making me want to breath some herbal air, dust of the Tolkien and see what Bilbo is up to.
