I've had a 360 since it came out. Same one, never broken down. Here's a few tips that are ESSENTIAL to longevity.

1) NEVER stand your xbox 360 upright. It'll break the disktray (same for PS3) If you notice your CDs have a scratch on them that are perfect circles, you'll know you fucked ur xbox permanently

2) NEVER lay your consoles on carpet while playing. Fucks with the ventilation and your console could overheat

I have a 360, PS3 and Wii and love them all, so this is a non-biased post

Ofcourse i dont place my 360 on the floor when im playing it. oh and i dont have it standing it lays flat. MS already said before the 360 release that the 360 could operate on its side but it wasnt intended to operate on its side all the time retards.

PS3 is better there is no question about that....but my XBOX has been left on for 10 hours a day for weeks on end because my son has taken a liking to GTA 4 and I havent had any problems. Its about 2 years old now. Maybe,  its because I keep my house so cold.
