@Jamindekker Some people can spot that it's half the deck. I can do that sometimes. However, the point is that the deck is in order to begin with and when you do a perfect shuffle all the cards end up in a pre-determined place. So the first time you do 8 shuffles in a row you carefully find the half way point and _memorize_ the sequence of cards. Once you've memorized it, then you just use the same sequence every time you do eight shuffles.
In times gone by you would have been burnt as a witch. Didn't understand any of the maths of course (the only mods I understand are the quadrophenia kind - and I'm not sure I entirely understand them). Iain, Lisa, Rose and the boy, Tring.
You probably don't know me. I came to your talk on perfect shuffles, and pythagoras' triangles at Leeds on the 5th. I thought you were amazing! I preferred your speech to Sara Sandler's. Mirrors are hard! Thank you for taking some of your time to come and show us what you could do. You've certainly got me intrigued. I hope to be just like you one day, a lecturer at a university. And again - Thank You!
@Crefabine Glad to hear that you enjoyed the talk and good luck with the career ambitions. If you need any advice on which universities to apply to or whatever, then just drop me a line.
I do indeed know your dad as we are in the same department. If you think I'm good, then you should search on YouTube for David Willmott's record breaking faro session
I have a question, how do you know when it's half the deck? how did you know the middle was 7 of clover...?

Intriguing! I just purchased your book and cannot wait to get to some of the more interesting material like this.
As a side note, I am still amazed at how you were physically able to do the 'perfect shuffle' with such ease. It looks impossible ... like magic.

This makes maths interesting. If only I went to Leeds and went to your lectures. Oh wait a minute....I do.
