Oh god I loved that man. I used to watch the Farm and Home Hour every morning and just laughed and laughed. Course his stores werent in the best parts of town, I used to shop at the one out in Vestal and that was a rough place. Cas, we miss you. Never be another one like you.
Cas used to live in a modest house near our more upscale area of Knoxville, TN and drove a Nash. He probably could have afforded a Rolls Royce. He waved at everybody that passed by and had a late afternoon TV show that was a scream. I'm not sure if he was serious or not, but had a loyal following.
Cas was a good friend of my grandparents, and I remember him often pulling up on the hill at their house. He always had something to bring for everyone in his trunk. Watermelon LOL etc. He was a good person, a little eccentric, but really never meant any harm to anyone. He deffinately was a product of his time, but worked hard for every dime he earned. I smell bacon and sausage cooking everytime I see a video or think about those days.
@amkaplan It was actually a camera shot of a white kid and a black kid eating watermelons. Not sure where ol Cas was going but not cool today. Surprised the stations carried that.
@icom1020 give it a break icom - if we had more people around today like Ol' Cas, our country wouldn't be in the sorry shape that it's in. we'd be better off if we had more black folks eating watermelon.
@tennsmoothie "we'd be better off if we had more black folks eating watermelon." That's why time takes care of dead folks like Walker, Time and generations have changed.
I laugh harder every time I watch this. I can barely remember the Cas Walker show growing it, I wasn't old enough to appreciate it ....classic East Tennessee Character how funny . That is rich.
Whoop hell outta the thieves in DC and keep 'em from taking our pocketbooks! Cas made history by being an HONEST businessman and a true statesman. We need more like him! Cas, God rest your brave, dignified soul....you are sorely missed here.
Instead of Thumpin' good, Cas is telling us to "Thump 'EM Good!!" hahaha great post full of memories. I remember the yellow feet prints in the parking lots from my youth. RIP Cas--a true Knoxvillian
I was born in1957 and lived until 1979 in Knoxville . My family shopped at the "Sign Of The Shears" all those years. I can still sing the "Thumpin' Good" watermelon commercial by heart too! Cas Walker was a "one-of-a-kind"
That old racist rascal was certainly a force to be reckoned with! I was just a kid when he was doing all that, but I remember people protesting in front of his store that served the African American community because his prices were higher there than in his other stores.
I believe that Cas broadcast this in response to the "Gypsies". In the 1970s they robbed his Central Ave. store and made off with about 15 thousand in cash. Cas was mad about that for years.
There is a myspace page dedicated to this guy. Whenever we had a new employee come from another part of the country, I would always tell them to watch the "Farm and Home Hour" and they would see something very unique! LMAO
I remember Cas Walker, but the funniest thing was my mother talking about one year they got in a really good crop of fresh pecans, or walnuts or something - anyhow, one day they announced that "Cas Walker's got the best nuts in town..."
I can barely remember Cas Walker's stores. My grandmother used to shop there all the time and those stamps they had you collected and got free stuff. You all are right, Cas Walker was THE MAN and actually still is in so many ways. I did get to meet him one time at Ciderville Music Store not too long before he died. He was the nicest guy you could ever meet but like in this video, he sure didn't care to speak his mind. We miss you Cas but you'll never be forgotten
Lots of stores gave out stamps in those days, Cas Walker had a redemption center insdie the store in our town. He was always having different contests where he would give stuff away. Mostly CA$H.
Reminds me a bit of Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio. We need more folks like them, unafraid to stand up for their family, property, dignity and freedom.
Most awesome kick butt man in the history of East Tennessee!! A "Real Man" God love your soul!! He gets full credit for making Dolly Parton the star she is! Cas Walker didn't take crap from anyone! Cas Walker "run" Knoxville!
I recall shopping at Cas Walkers in East Knoxville TN. on Magnolia Ave. I imagine thats one spot he must of been referring to cause its a bad side of town now. It'll never be the same cause the authorities never intend to get a control on all the bad areas of town and all the trouble that comes from them. That buildings still there, but its closed up. It was recently a rent a center for a few years, but...you can only imagine why its no longer there being on the bad side of town.
Too bad we can't do this today... now it would be "police brutality", "a setup", "a lawsuit", "FCC, FBI, TBI, and multiple other agencies investigation" and countless other civil rights violations.
That's they way it should be and we would not have the problems we have now. If I were a thief and knew my ass was gonna get kicked at Cas Walkers..I wouldn't go to Cas Walkers..pretty simple. Cas was a good man that helped a lot of people be successful. One in particular, a little poor girl from Sevierville by the name of Dolly Parton...yes, her first job was on Cas Walkers radio show. RIP Cas Walker.

Good ol' Cas. I'm still lookin' for video of the "Thumpin' Good" ad with the kid eating watermelon.
I can't figure out why the suggested videos at right would have one about breastfeeding at the top. Wonder what Cas would say? Yeehaw!!
