The Polar Bear is diferent from Birds cuz when you play the Polar Bear as white you want to play e4. Birds opening is not about e4. In general, if you manage to play e4 in hte Polar Bear you are doing ok.
at 2:35 he says gampree (?) variation of the sicilain. How would you spell that so I can research it a little bit more. I would normally search it on my fritz but I do not have my normal computer with me.
Hi Henrik. I played you many times online when I started to play chess 6-7 years ago. 1-2 minute games. That was great fun and I still have the saved games- I won about 2% lol-, I was very impressed by your coninously f4 f4 f4 back then. - I still play for fun now and then. - Yet I dont know any openings. just E4 d3 Nf3- Be2-0-0. I am about 2250 now. Thanks for posting. -
if you can get to 2250 without knowing the openings, you seriously should study a little bit. Knowing some openings in depth greatly improves ones winning chances.
I dont understand. If black plays e5 then white responds: fxe5 winning a pawn. Whites e3 blocks blacks Bc5 and whites d4 forces black to exchange or lose tempo
I was reading some of the comments, and I just wanted to clarify something: The Polar Bear in its entirety is not Bird's opening.
If you'd just continue to watch the videos, you'd see that not only is 2. Nf3 pretty much a constant (thus making the opening last 2 moves at least - Bird's is one), but it is a SYSTEM, not an OPENING. Trust me, play the Polar Bear System, and you will end up with a very different game than just playing Bird's Opening. Just sayin'....
Its quite the opposite of risky actually. Learning this opening and the dutch defense for black means you only have to learn one opening which can be used for black OR white. It makes it the easiest and most versatile opening you could learn
krakkaskak: Thx for all your vids. I've seriously watched most of them. I'm only 1400 or so (a beginner) and I've tried the polar bear against much stronger opponents online. I've went on to have interesting middle games with it. Just wanted to say thanks and I will check out your website.
nope, bird opening is 1.f4, then you can play what you want and maybe transpose in some other openings systems (grand prix attack etc.) but 1.f4 is bird opening and bird opening remains. What he refer to with the polar bear system's name is just a leningrad dutch with reversed colours...that is: a variation of the bird opening. He changed the name just to make notice the fact he developed it very deeply and it's his main weapon, but the name is in fact bird.
That is the greatest chess advice I have ever recieved! Losing to a chess program destroys my confidence. Thank you for telling me that Im not alone in my loses. Also: When I get the comptuer to play the game against itself in that position: White loses(But it misses a very obvious back rank mate at move 40 or so)
Dear GM Danielsen, thanks again for providing such high-quality chess instruction for free here on YouTube. But many of your fans want to know why you call Bird's Opening (1.f4) the Polar Bear System?
At 5.05 if black move d6 and white Ng5 than black Bg4 atack the queen!!! than all the plan is gone! What response is good then?

If you are having trouble with it, try this simple combination(which is good against computers too!)
1. f4 e5 2. nf6 c6 3. e3 Bg5 4. d4
This gives you a nice closed position with only a few minor difficulties, but only if you're playing against someone good

non of ur analysis focus on bishop to c5 after e5! pointing down on that deadly diagnoal

Bird's opening is quiet risky to play. I wouldn't recommend this opening unless you're an experienced player.

why do u say its risky?

THEY SHOULD STRIP YOU OF YOUR GM NORM FOR CALLING THE BIRDS OPENNING THE POLAR BEAR SYSTEM. f4 is the birds system you punk.

the bird opening is f4 then b3 for white.. since he plays g3 and still castles king side, its a different opening.. deal with it douche bag

Splendid effort.
Danielsen the only GM who regulraly punts the Birds so he is the guy for this. More insightful than the quite poor, uninspired Taylor book.
Thankyou Mr Danielsen for your work and for sharing this.
