Every animal on the ecosystem plays a role on every environment regardless of being the top food chain there will be always something else that will feast on them and another. Therefore there is no such thing as ranks; as it moves constant. That is why we call it the life cycle.

We spread disease, murder each other, start wars, abortions obviously keep the population down, ect. One could say that (to a degree) we controll our own population in place of some higher predator.
