we're playing this tonight and I have the part in front of me. There is actually a third movement included, but which is one giant cadenza which ends with an attacca into the 4th movement. You can see the cellist direct the first string chord with his head because the timing is very very tricky!
My favourite Shostakovich cello concertos player is Mischa Maisky... I also DO like Han-na Chang interpretation. Even though it was composed and dedicated to maestro Rostropovich, I consider this two instrumentalist the better. I haven't heard Truls Mork yet, probably he could change my mind. :D
lynn harrell's shosty 1 will always be unbeatable for me... the first time i saw it live too.. he blew everyones socks off at disney hall. fkin i was near front and he didnt move at all until the timpani went bongg then he just like thrust his body forward in a huge sweep, and being a big man... everyone all leaned away from him haha. and played with the light away from his face so you couldnt see his eyes clearly and had a beard
He looks like a surprised 4-year-old girl most of the time, but the playing itself is fantastic. He's one of those musicians that should stick to audio.
The camera work is horrible... Why fade away from the soloist at a crucial moment???
This is much different than the Wispelway playing the Haydn C. He is playing a different bow, as well. His fingerings are superb, but I must confess that his wobbly head is very distracting.
This camera work is just Terrible. He seems very "into" the piece, though...
Rostropovich and Yo yo Ma are still the best, btu I respect wispelway very very much
Never thought that I'd ever say this, but despite being so different, his Bach just wins me over each time I hear it. Few musicians have guts to express themselves in such level of artistic integrity.
Kind of a Heavy Metal cellist. I love Wispelwey's playing, technique and artistry, but every time I suffer through Shostakovich I'm reminded that his music was banned in the USSR for many years...
I love this version of it. Although Han-na Chang is my idol, she only adds power to the piece and not much style. I know it's hard to do ESPECIALLY with a piece this technically difficult but he really makes it his. Never heard of him but really enjoyed it.
i kind of disagree with the whole he's not the show off type thing, even though i would say he's a great performer, i would say he really does love the attention, who wouldn't, but having met him in person i'd say sometimes its a bit over the top.
When we were at his concert and he was just about to start playing bach, and he asked someone in the audience which suite he was meant to be playing, which i thought was a bit arrogant, he was still incredible, and i learnt alot from him.
ughhh...i didn't like it....there is a such thing as too over dramatic...i mean that head movement wasn't too pretty and a bit distracting..cus all i paid attention to was the bobbing and expression!!
Rostropovich PLAYED it well, the others just try to play it. maybe Yo-Yo Ma, I don't know. But I think Wispelwey does not understand the meaning of this piece, the 4th movement is about the red army, or the dance of the russian people (we don't know it exactly) but he doesn't play neither. Maybe it's only my opinion.. :) .m.m.
amazing,
many people in the comments section criticize this guy unjustly. He executes the piece beautifully.

1:28 - 1:40... imo one of the hardest passages in the repertoire to play up to speed, and he does it with ease.
jonathantosio 2 years ago
ya but, um how about one of the hardest PIECES in repertoire, and does the whole thing absolutely ridiculously!
jwunschie14 2 years ago
@jonathantosio not really if you work on your scales, it's not especially awkward.

I recommend listening to my "unbeatable recording": Han-na Chang.

Totally agree, Schiff is marvellous.

Schiff is simply the best. And the orchestra sounds marvellous. Truly recommended

The recording with the best orchestra is by Truls Mork and the London Philharmonic

We are not their level to judge. Wispelwey has awesome technique and depth. He is not the show-off type.

The title "3rd cadenza to 4th Movement" seems to me to be confusing.
