Don't think she had much choice. None of the really good ones would be caught dead dancing with her. Too much of a risk that she would outdo them. Most male dancers found her extremely threatening. Her coach at the time chose this guy and for being 18 and it was twenty-six years ago, he did a good job on the partnering, guess you can look at it that way.

I might add, to Malakhov's credit that he danced with her as much as he did, one of the few magnificent ones who worked with her. . . .

she needs to work on her entrance and exit run and needs more care on her port de bras (thrs a lot of broken wrist arm alignments. but apart from that wow im impressed.. im 17 and not even half as good as her =.=

And by the way, Varna is in Bulgaria, not in Russia.

you don't need to correct my geography knowledge ... i know where varna is (i was born about 300 km away from it) i meant the russian competitors,coaches and other dance related people present at the competition

I was 6 when she placed 2nd at the 1982 IBC; I watched her on tape over and over. She was my idol but I have never seen the Varna footage- thank you for posting! She does all the same classical vars as in '82, but her expression and technique are even better. She also replaced the double attitude turn on which she fell in '82 with more balances, perhaps influenced by the stunning balances of Wang Qifeng in the '82 IBC who would likely have won gold had her partner not defected. Brava, Katherine!
