  • Great cover - very musical!

  • Smokin'

  • Smokin'

  • I watch this over and over. Im learning how to play this song as well as sing it. Thank you for posting this!!!!

  • Hey Dat was Sweet!!!

  • Well right, Strat, don't let no fucking body tell you what to do or not. If making music is your thing, just go ahead and don't mind other people's frustees. (though I must say, I've seen and heard better things of you, but what the fuck, your vids have given me lots of pleasure, and I've learned a thing or two from you!).

  • damn man just wish they still had bands like this today. just a shame

  • I put on my best Donald Fagan and found myself singing along...fun playing!

  • Jeeeesssssuuuuussssss!!!

  • @ltkindermann Thanks!

  • @Stratman1920 FoulOwl is obviously a spiteful person. It's one thing to give honest opinion about a video. it's quiet different when he uses those malicious language. I hate people like him, this is cyber bullying. You should delete FoulOwl's comments as well as block him!

  • singing is .............................

  • really nice, so many chords to navigate that song!! well played

  • wow! this is a great job!

  • This really helped me with the chords to this song.

    Thanks a lot!

  • If you post yourself on YouTube playing along to someone else's song, you should expect criticism.

  • If you are a guitar player who loves trying to figure out how to play steely dan songs, you might like to find a video like this. If you enjoy it great, if you don't, se la vie. I enjoyed playing it and shared. I am beyond caring who criticizes me on youtube, got more important concerns in life.

  • I think that it was enjoyable cause I really love Steely Dan and would like to one day see him if he ever comes to Illinois or somewhere close. Keep making your music and bonk all those negative comments

  • "he" is coming to chicago in a month

  • Wow nice playing dude!!!!! Im learning a few things by watching this.

  • Stratman gets it done!! you need to post some new vids dude.....thoroughly enjoyed your stuff you have posted

  • Hey Stratman, thanks for your contribution

I've learned a lot because of your music.

I wanted to learn some Steely Dan

after doing covers for40+ yrs.You made that possible,KUDOS...

  • sounds real cool man, steely dan rules, good job Bro

  • liked it, nice

  • It's Green Street, not Main St.

    Is this a joke?

  • Great song! Great job! I like your interpretation.

  • Dude, don't pay no mind to those haters!! You just do you and things will be just fine!!

  • Brotha Man is freakin genius! He's a true fan to master Black Cow like that. Big up from LOGIKBOMB (DC Baby) Go Stratman Go!

  • looks like your having fun hun ,,you go boy!

  • nothing wrong with that! your pretty good !

  • nice!

Drink your big black cow and get outta here ;)

  • sing it loud and proud my bro!your doing just fine, thanks for the music.

  • ma chi è sto pirla?

  • i got a confession stratman...when i typed in black cow, your video came up first...i was REALLY looking to see donald and walter...but i was still entertained...not bad dude

  • that is amazing, hey I was just having fun with this tune.

  • You tell 'em Stratman! And for heaven's sake don't mind the haters... I often wonder why the likes of you bothers with replying to such comments... keep on rockin' for all the folks out here who dig your scene.

  • Keep on doing what your doing. I love that song not matter who takes a hit at it. Cool

  • Keep on doing what your doing. I love that song mo matter who takes a hit at it

  • good song and not too bad of an attempt bro.

    keep up the good job

  • Also, instead of "One of these surely will make everything right" on the first verse it's, "One of these surely will screen out the sorrow"...and not "Down on Main Street", it's "Down to Green Street". Again, great job!

  • Just so you know...the lyrics are, "On the counter, by your keys", not "on the corner". Great job!

  • I love it. I feel your passion. Steely Dan is one of the greatest! I remember loving their songs as a kid and as an adult they're even better.

  • I have to disagree with your choice of "Seinfeld Slap Bass" though.

This requires a half-dead roundwound, mid-'70's Fender Jazz finger-style bass sound.

    It just does.

Great guitar playing, by the way.

  • Good work man. SD songs are never easy to sing and play along because of the complex structure that makes them up. No, you may not have the best voice, but your singing is not lame. Your guitar work is pretty good indeed.

  • as randy would say,"check it out, dawg" pause"that was good, i liked it"[paula said you nailed it" and simon said you needed more explosions. I 351M GT said you didn't miss a note, good job STEELYDAN gets it done, cya ...

  • Hey Stratman, there's just one thing your missing .. a groupie! I am ready, willing and able to fill this job. Love the Dan and I think you sing and play brilliant!

  • Thanks! I could use a groupie! I know my singing is lame, but oh how I love that guitar. Steely Dan rules!

  • Very well done Stratman.

  • Stop it right now fatty!, while your ahead

  • I will leave this comment here as a shining example (a monument of sorts) to someone who is less than a man. A coward in fact, who has no socially redeamable qualities or value.

  • Great version of a great song. Nice work !

  • what's up with the phase shift sounding thing?

  • not sure what you are refering to.....

  • Victor Feldman would be turning over in his grave with that shockingly over volumed guitar cancelling out his solo.

  • gee thanks

  • Twas a joke :-)

My only suggestion would be to drop that chug a lug rhythm style. With latter day (Aja was late 70's as opposed to Can't Buy A Thrill) Dan stuff, as a guitarist, until it's your time to do a solo, you're really in the background following what the keys are doing. Overall you nailed it. But just back the volume off a little, and try and think a little outside the square for a solo. Don't just stick to blues.

  • You did note that this was a midifile and not the real deal as a backup. I was just having some fun with this, being the amature musician that I am. You may not find anyone else here on Youtube, attempting this one. Comments were well received and appreciated, thanks.

  • I think your playing is a bit better than "amateur musician" and as I said, basically you nailed it. I was just putting forward a few suggestions. If you were in a session with Fagen and Becks, thats what they'd be doing. It's hard on youtube, or any site where the words are all you see. But I certainly wasn't being derogatory.

  • Last year I was actually in a Steely Dan tribute band, talk about being pushed... we all put pressure on each other, there was some damn good musicianship in that band. In the end the pressure on working professionals in terms of time was too much and we folded. It lasted about a year and we all learned a lot. Take care and thanks again.

  • Sounds good friend. Feelin the solo

  • Yeah Man ?

  • A real crying disgrace.

  • do you mean that in a good way?

  • i think he's talking about the bass, though i could be wrong. Good work by the way, you surprising did the song some justice, which is a hard thing to do. Your singing could use a *bit* of work, but then again Fagen's voice is hard to be compared to. For the most part, good work.

  • Yeah, my singing is lame for sure, but I love playing this. The bass, horns, drums are all in the midi file that I used as a backup. I tweaked the bass in Reason and put a Seinfeld-sort-of slap-bass voice on it. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • I must admit your vocals are very well for this song. Keep up the great work man! It's a great video!!

  • Craig? Is that you? Great job! I love this song.

  • Nope, I'm not Craig.

  • Well, either way, nice job on the song.

  • Thanks, I appreciate that. Steely Dan is surely my all-time favorite band.

  • If I heard this in a bar, I just might have to order another drink--and I mean that in a good way! Great job on the solo, and the vocals have a nice, untrained, bluesy quality to them.

  • Yep, I'm the guitar player and usually leave the singing to the singers. thanks for your comment.

  • Good job ,man.

This is my favorite song of Steely Dan.

But,I feel like that your groove and feel just like a farmer.

  • thanks although I am not quite sure what you mean in your comment.

  • Well done, accurate guitar playing, dedicated musician here, and I love the song & wish I could jam guitars with this guy-I think he'd teach me a few things!!...Thank you, Stratman1920....

  • i like

  • Just had a guy make some real hateful remarks on this video. My attitude is "joke 'em if they can't take a fuck", and then I blocked his ass after a few exchanges. This site is just about music for many of us and watching other people having some fun with it. If you don't like a video or how someone plays a song, don't watch it (simple really). Its a hobby for me and somehow I rembember that in the 60's, music was about love and not hate.

  • i wouldnt mind a wanker like that he just pissed he cant play like the master u are

  • Unfortunately, music fans have become a lot more stuck up and angry over the years. Either way, it's just tosspots trying to get a cheap thrill by trolling people with actual talent. They're never worth the time of day.

Cool video, by the way. Like it.

  • get them hands insured unreal do the whole album

  • Thanks partner, I will post some more from this album in the coming months. My secret ambition is to do Asia, I know it pretty well but it will take a lot of woodshedding to get it real smooth (and accurate).

  • nice one look forward to listing to some decent sounds dubliner up the dubs

  • nice...

  • nice job cuz sweet song!!!!!!!

  • not bad.....true steely dan fan and i very critical of covers but ...i'll give you this one

  • oh yeah...great guitar playing, chords look like they're so difficult to play but you done it. nice try on the vocals too.

  • Great job. I like the lighting!

  • Wicked! Well done! Check out my Steel Dan cover.

  • hey, pretty greasy chords huh, the steely ones sure know how to put together some intricate changes.credit to you for puttin in some new twists. Dan Fan steely1

  • nice job man

  • why did you make a video of you playing this?

  • why not? I like this song a lot. I think that musicians appreciate seeing the chords. SD music is not so easy to play.

  • no kidding...nice work for the fingers tho.

  • "...can make everything right..."!...i love that ,and he fudges the chord right on that lyric!....CLASSIC!...makes me like this version even more!...lol

  • It was purely serendipitous that I fudged a chord exactly after the lyric "make everything right", but now that you mention it, that is kind of amuzing and you could get used to it!! Glad you enjoyed this.

  • The percentage of spam in my comments is rising dramatically, to the point I would say it is approximately 4:1 spam. This is pointing to the demise of this site as a viable means to express yourself. Fuck all spammers!

  • I'm with you. I fucking hate that.(The spam on all the comment pages)

  • This is my third song to top 10,000 views, the power of YouTube is humbling, and it is simply an amazing thing. Who says you can't teach an old dog, new tricks!

  • My Lord, I was not aware of the stroke issue until now.

Now I know what inaudibly shone trough the song, a fully established musical personality. Move on, sound on.

  • yeah.. i will have a black now and an white russian as well hehehehehhehe good try man

  • We don't have here: A 100KW stage PA. 5 Tons of light-show gimmicks. Crying crowd also missing.

We do have here: Credible song interpretation. Well done, Mr. Strat! The pure way is the hard way and you can walk.

  • Yeah man, I like that comment! Thank you my friend.

  • man!! awesome..though some parts are off but tell you what ..il pay to see you live doing steely

  • Yeah my singing is pretty sketchy on this but I love playing this song. Thanks for the comment!

  • really cool man

  • hey bro, you heard don's "maxine" from nightfly? please cover that one, or "your gold teeth II" next. keep up the great guit playing!

  • Yeah, I love that nightfly album. I kinda used that record as the textbook of bass and learned many of those songs on the bass. I will try to post some of that.

  • you know i just kept looking at your excellent chord work! it took the pain out of the vocals. i admit though that this one's a toughie. but my compliments buddy, great guitar playing stratman. i am a devotee of dan since 1975 when i was 10. from new delhi, india

  • it did get a litle flat on through around 2:00 but hey. your only human. love it.

  • Thanks for the comments, and I will be the first to admit that this song is clearly out of my comfortable singing range. Luckily in my band I only sing backup harmony and have an awesome singer.

  • dude STFU!!! I tink ythe singing is great in this. and this is coming from someone who sings in a band.

  • jez i thought my vocals were bad

  • Your are right, thank god I have good singers in the band.

  • Wow man, this is my first video to go over 5,000 views, I am so blown away by the power of YouTube, where you can just play one of your favorite songs and then people come from out of nowhere to check you out and comment. Thanks to all who have enjoyed this video. I have enjoyed your music as well!

  • just had to listen to this again (my favorite steely dan tune...AJA was such a fantastic album)

  • Thanks buddy, I stopped by your channel again as well yesterday and checked out your new posts. You're a great guitarist my friend.

  • what godsmackin' chord work, bro. you're a king, man! hey, appreciation from this musician in india.

  • Very cool, thank you my man! I have never been to India, and it is at the top of my list of places I dream to visit.

  • Visionary; that word comes to mind.

  • Great to watch ! kinda hilarious though cause you remind me of my chunky cousin especially when you close your eyes and emote the song.Would love to see you live while i'm stoned, I'd be so entertained ! But nice to see a fellow fan ofn steely dan.

  • You're too funny. Yes, I think stoned would be the best way to watch me.

  • Another great post Stratman1920,just love those jazzy chords, keep postin bro. 5stars, Steely Dan forever!!

  • That is a sick rendition I love it. This is was my introduction to Steely Dan. Awesome guitar man, just work on the lyrics and the voice. You're on key but it's not focused.

  • I have real singers in both bands thankfully. As you mature as a rock musician you will suddently realize one day that Steely Dan is something special, what they call "thinking man's rock". All the hard-core guitar fools like me that I ever met are totally into them. I am honored that I have turned you on to thier music. Now whip out that guitar and try to play some of that stuff, it is very satisfying when you pull it off.

  • great guitar tone, great playing all around dude, nice

  • 'cept you're not getting all the chords right...

  • dynamite cat..i love this song

  • Awesome song!

  • DogSeeker, you done found the big dog! Why must I feel like that, why must I chase the cat? Nothin' but the dog in me! Woof!

  • so does this like mean you're a you tube star???

  • I get my groove on the tube.

  • 5 stars

  • Thanks!!!

  • True Story- Did Karaoke to this song w/o looking @ the TV prompter, did some ad-libbing during all the solos & what-not, then got a standing ovation from all 2 dozen in the HICKEST part of TN. Had to follow it up with what else? Bowie's "Suffragette City" of course. They all enjoyed the 'Wam, Bam, Thank You Mam" part!!! You go Stratman- only other guy i saw completely copy cat Black Cow was the late, great Shawn Lane!!! This should tell you're in good company!!!

  • Thanks! I was considering posting some more of the "Dan", the best band ever, amen. To make it sound great though, you need an awesome midi file as backup.

  • That's that, alright! Nicely played and sung there. Btw, try to play Caves Of Altamira please.

  • Go Johnny Go! you are awsome

  • Thanks cuz, look forward to playing for ya in person!

  • Great job, Stratman!!!

  • Thanks Montauk! I pumped up that bass in the midifile until it practically jumps out and gets in your face, then there is no way to sit still while you play it.
