I am a socialist/communist and I am confused on how to pick sides. I believe the people should have free will but i'm afraid they will make the wrong choice. While the words, translated into English, are good, the sad fact is that the Russian people have never really been free under communism. Only under a Republican form of government can people be truly free. When "government" tells you what sort of work you must do for a living, THAT is not real freedom: it's a form of slavery.
In the USA, we decide for ourselves what we will do for work, how we will worship, and how we will freely express our opinions of the government. Can you do the same?
The lyrics about conquest and defeating invaders referred specifically to their victory over Nazi Germany. The Allies were able to win World War II because the Soviets had bled Hitler's war machine dry on the eastern front -- the D-Day invasion would have been impossible if the truce between Hitler and Stalin had remained unbroken. Not that I'm praising Stalin, he was every bit as monstrous as Hitler, but the Russians had good reason to feel proud in 1945 -- and damned good taste in music.

Our anthem is actually pretty good. It's just that most performances are shit. They always have some talentless woman try to sing it an a cappella jazz style and it's always god-awful.
There are good arrangements of it that are great. My personal favorite is Stravinsky's. If you just have someone with some talent sing that with the correct background music, it sounds awesome.

Great song and great military it was. I hope USSR will restore one day again and only then justice and balance will be restored on this planet. America played the major part of fall of Soviet Union and because of USA USSR fall the great communisam was on USA way because they were too powerful. However, when he died, life in the USSR became a dream come true for workers, farmers, simple people of any nationality. Too bad Kalashnikov didn't invent his world famous rifle until AFTER WW2, the Nazis wouldn't know what had hit them. Awesome anthem, unlike the sad and lifeless United States anthem. Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but our anthem is weak, you can't even rock it without it sounding sad and beaten. This anthem is full of passion and pride, honor for those who fell in battle.

One interesting thing is that people always see the Soviet Union as Russian, there were over 15 different countries ( independent republics ! ) with their own culture and language belonging to the Union, so if Soviet had been in all of Europe it wouldnt be all Russia, it would still be the Soviet Union.

@TheJaaysog It was better when most of the world was communist. It meant more job protection for people living in capitalist countries when the rest of the world had such guarded economies. There were less places for captains to outsource labor to and betray their domestic work forces. Now economies are too unguarded thanks to neo-liberalism and the IMF gaining world dominance. I wouldn't have wanted the CCCP to gain world dominance either, but at least there was a counter-balancing.
