Well guns and drugs is another matter, but DADT is a compromise Clinton put in place because they could not ammend the constitution to change the UCMJ. If they ignore the legal issue and simply make a policy, then why do we have laws? We could just make a policy that doesn't take vote or is even vetted by the people. DADT is a sidestep. The law says 'no sodomy'.
@Goohuman The UCMJ does not require an amendment to the Constitution to change, it's just a Congressional law, and DADT was not a compromise because of that, it was a compromise because Congress wasn't going to allow open service.

@Goohuman The UCMJ is amended all the time - where in the world did you get that idea? And bringing up article 125 is silly - it is not specific to gays. Everyone in the armed forces who isn't a virgin has probably violated article 125 at one time or another. Allowing homosexuals in doesn't "directly contradict" article 125 any more than allowing heterosexuals in. Also, article 125 is likely unconstitutional anyway due to Lawrence v. Texas, just hasn't been challenged yet.

The truth is they would have to get a Congress and the Senate and the President to agree to repeal the Sodomy laws in the UCMJ. Then there'd be some difference. We don't allow women to serve in combat oriented sections of the military, we don't allow the handicapped to join, nor felons or people over the age of 35. Well guns and drugs is another matter, but DADT is a compromise Clinton put in place because they could not ammend the constitution to change the UCMJ. If they ignore the legal issue and simply make a policy, then why do we have laws? We could just make a policy that doesn't take vote or is even vetted by the people. DADT is a sidestep. The law says 'no sodomy'.

@Goohuman The UCMJ is amended all the time - where in the world did you get that idea? And bringing up article 125 is silly - it is not specific to gays. Everyone in the armed forces who isn't a virgin has probably violated article 125 at one time or another. Allowing homosexuals in doesn't "directly contradict" article 125 any more than allowing heterosexuals in. Also, article 125 is likely unconstitutional anyway due to Lawrence v. Texas, just hasn't been challenged yet.

The problem is, if we are going to accept that there are no absolute standards of morality, then the only fair way to set a standard is through a referendum. Again, the gays are only tolerant when they get their way. When they lose a plebiscite, they go crying to the courts to IMPOSE the will of a minority onto a majority. So much for tolerance.

I spent 6 years in, i seen more people kicked out for cheating on their spouses than for being gay. Seen flambouyent guys with zero room for doubt, hehe, even had one of my buddies who and came home to his flaming roomate and his "civilian friend" chilling out in matching local hotel bath robes they recently acquired... it was a bit much and he begged and pleaded to be moved. Point being, hazing isnt the issue so much as being allowed to climb the top of the ladder.

Serving is voluntary so if you want to tell everyone how gay you are don't join. Being gay is personal sexual choice or preference, it's not like being black or white. For two, men react differently to other men who they think may be interested in them sexually, because it is disgusting to them unless they are gay. This disrupts team work. As for it being a choice or not, no, and that's a weird thing to even suggest. Do you honestly think you could stomach having sex with whichever gender you're not attracted to?
