  • Love this video and the coconut treatment. Not only is it making her hair more manageable, it's also strengthening her hair. She will really appreciate how well you took care of your hair when she gets older. I love that she still has her natural curls.

For brushing/combing out her hair, you can try using a Denman brush. I recently bought one for myself and I love it. It really helps with quick and easy detangling without a lot of breakage. I think I may try this for my hair as well.

  • I appreciate you puttingi this up. I've been looking for something like this but I didn't think I would find it. My issue is like many, I have different textures in different areas. One area is curly and one area has a much looser curl pattern. I would like to get the patterns more consistent. I was even thinking of getting a texturizer. Thanks to you I can use this method to relax the curl on the part of my hair that's crazy. thank you and please don't let the haters stop you from sharing.

  • great.this is more of a super deep conditioning treatment that softens the curl pattern and make it a lot more manageable.perfect for kinky curly naturals.

  • can u write th name of the website for the shea and avocado butter please.

  • i cant wait to try this too. like guitarrachica my hair was like this when i was young. and the only thing my mom knew to do was pick it out into a fro. then we started with relaxers. i went natural for about 3 yrs, last yr and a half i've had 3 relaxers. im on my way back to natural hair. it was soo healthy then. good job mama with your daughters hair, she will surely thank you when shes grown. her hair is gorgeous =)

  • where can I buy the unrefined Shea butter on-line?

  • @queeny107 Coastalscents(dot)com

  • awwwww your baby got beautiful 3c/4a hair..keep it natural =D

  • your daughters hair is GORGEOUS!

she's lucky to have you to teach her how to care for her hair =)

  • At what point do you wash? Before video 1 and 2 or after? Thanks so much for these videos!!!! I actually have all of this stuff at home but never thought of using it on my hair, I use it as lotions on my skin.

  • my daughter is 11 years old and decided to go on the natural hair journey. I am very proud of her decide and while I was searching the web to fine out how I can go about this... Here you were. Thank you for talking the time to show the video. My daughter is in love with what she say on the video and can not wait to start. Thanks again.

  • do you still do all of the same things with your daughters hair? I was hoping you could do a vid with her complete daily/weekly regimine/protectives styles.........thanks in advance!

  • Wow her hair looks SOOOOOO HEALTHY! omg is dead soft looking and thick!

    so blesssed.

  • HELLO I AM NATURAL AND MY HAIR IS ABOUT LONG AS A POINTER FINGER STRECHED HOW CAN I GET IT TO GROW AS LONG AS YOUR DAUGHTERS???

  • Where did you that Shea? I paid 10 buck for 8 oz. And the Avocado Butter?

  • do you was it out or leave it in?

  • Did you shampoo the coconut cream mixture out or just rinse it out like a conditioner?

  • YOUR DAUGHTER HAS BEAUTIFUL HAIR!

  • after the coconut creme did you wash it out? or just rub it in really well?

  • ooohhhh thanks for the video. I have FOUR daughters with LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of hair *chuckle* Hair wash day is more like "hair wash week" cuz it takes me SO long to wash, detangle and style ALL of their heads. I'll try and use this mixture to help with the detangling and softening process.

  • you are just amazing...thank you for this

  • you are just amazing...thanx for this

  • you are just amazing...thanx for this

  • Hi thatgirrl5! I love this video with you and your daugther! Her hair reminds me of my hair when I was her age! I wish my mom had done this when I was that age instead of giving me a chemical relaxer! I have been natural for over 5 yrs and seeing you gives me addedconfidence that I've made the right decision. Plus when I get married and have kids I'll be reviewing your videos! lol Please keep doing what you do! Your daughter will definantly thank you later!

  • so would this 'relaxer treatment' work on the type of hair that gets really kinky and nappy whenever water comes around and breaks off dryer combs? I don't mean getting softer my hair's very very soft apparently, but taking away the headache of combing out the shrinkage after washing or the shriveling that comes whenever moisture is in the atmosphere and rain falls. I was just wondering did it help reduce these problems greatly?

  • I enjoyed the video, you may have answered this already but you have 12 pages of comments, please tell me where to purchase coconut cream? Thank you

  • I think its wonderful how you support your daughter s natural hair and keep her hair healthy, she will grow up proud of her texture and will be able to manage it in a healthy way

  • mum, just want to say that u r doing a great job, the fact that u take ur time to make sure that ur daughters hair is healthy, looks gud so that she herself will feel gud is already A+, thats all i have to say for now

  • I was gentle with her head...Perhaps the comb hitting the back of the chair was misleading. However, the video was done two years ago and her hair now is about an inch or two above her butt. Please do not come to my page to criticize.

  • @Wgirl99 My comment COON was directed to the person who said she has "mixed" hair and is lucky that her hair is not nappy. That would be a coon statement in my book.

  • Truly BEAUTIFUL. Great Texture!!

  • Its not a relaxer. Its just a really good conditioning treatment despite the name. It hasn't altered her hair at all

  • Your daughter is so cute and she is also so blessed to have a patient and careing mother like you.

  • Thank You!!! :^)

  • LOVELY, LOVELY HAIR.

  • She is such a good little girl letting you do her hair with no complaints. You are obviously taking great care of her hair, she'll thank you when she's older.

  • Thank you!!! :-^)

  • Your little girl's hair is beautiful. I was very tender headed as a child. Please be gentle when you comb her hair - your technique is a little heavy handed. Good to see that you are taking the time to care for her hair:)

  • damn

it sucks to have black/mixed hair

i'm in between black and mixed hair since my mom is mixed and my dad is black.

i'd say my hair is 3a/b with a little c at the root...i HATE that part of it the most

    im going to try this...eventually.

  • Stop trying to start a debate. Nobody wants to know what you hate about yourself. If u don't like your hair, feel free to go bald.

  • hahaha you would never see a white kid`s head being pulled on like this. They wouldn`t know what to do! haha. Reminds me of my childhood with my mom at me. She really took good care of my hair and I learned to pull back with my head lol.

  • I believe the comb hitting the back of the chair was misleading.

  • @beijosparavoce oh yes you would......my hair is naturally curly, and thick and gets really knotted. my mum has naturally straight smooth hair, both my parents and myself are white. my mum had no idea how to look after my hair when i was little so every day my hair got brushed like this.....thats exactly what my mornings were like.

  • i just wanted to let you know that it's better to use plain full fat yogurt instead of fat free because fat free replaces the fat with sugar, and if you're trying to avoid sugar in the yogurt (which it seemed like you were trying to do) it kind of defeats the purpose. otherwise, great recipe, i'll try it soon!

  • oh snap! i do this al lthe time to my hair with deep conditioner. works like a charm! i thought EVERYBODY knew about this? How else are you sposed to comb through natural hair, lol?

  • do you have to rinse the coconut mixture out at some point?

  • the comments were disabled for part one...but i think this should be called a treatment rather than relaxer lol whenever i think i think of relaxers i think of perms, but this looks good! i might try this when i do my big chop

  • I didn't say chemical, I said relaxer meaning that it relaxes the curl and helps with the kink.

  • @thatgirrl5 no i understand, but i'm saying in general it should be called a treatment. regardless of you meaning that it relaxes the curl, i still think of chemicals...loosen sounds like a better term, but that's what i think. whatever you call it is what you call it! i was just adding my random thought in there! :D

  • Do the results wash out after 2-3 months or do the roots grow out like a real relaxer? How long do the initial results last?

  • can you comment on how long you leave the products on the hair a part 3 is not done and rightly so.. a lot of comments to sort through and do you have to "bag" it to penetrate the hair better, thanx so much for the experient that went all to well great cant wait to try on little one every other month as you said dont want his hair to get to soft to hold on to a braid thanx so much :D Peace and Blessings to you and the family Frank

  • Hi-

about 1 hour some people left theirs on for two in other response commentry.

  • I have a question for anyone of you. I don't know if I just missed it.

1)Do you think it matters if your hair is damp after just washing, dry needs a washing or dry but was washed about two days ago.

2)Shampoo and condition after or is there no need for a conditioner

This treatment sounds like a really mild but intense natural conditioner for the hair and scalp. I just wanted to know which step is first or if it matters at all. I want to wash then do treatment and rinse it out

  • hi thatgirrl5 i was wondering if 1 year plus is to young to do this

  • I had wonderful results when I tried this, so thank you so much for sharing. I substituted a couple of ingredients - I don't have any avocado butter, but the shea butter was enough this time. I think I'll be doing this twice a month for the summer. lol

  • VERY GOOD!!! I'm so happy to hear that it worked for you...

  • Hello

thanks for a really informative video

Can i ask you for a bit more info on your daughters regime in terms of the weekly products you use...

    thanks again

    linda

  • you're quite welcome...i co-wash her hair once a week...once a month i use vo5 clarifying shampoo and condition with whatever i have on hand. i use kid's organics detangling shea butter lotion and a mix of coconut oil, shea butter that i put together as a moisturizer. then, every 2-3 months i do this treatment. that's it... pretty simple i think.

  • she has lovely hair! thanks for sharing!

  • you're welcome...thanx for watching.

  • Hi. I'm not too keen on buying hair products and such off of the internet, but It's been almost impossible for me to find coconut cream concentrate. Will coconut milk work just as well in its place? Or should I suck it up and buy some coconut cream concentrate online? Thanks!

  • if u can find it has the high fat content as the concentrate then yes.

  • Comment removed

  • I have a can here that only has 12 grams of fat and 110 Calories from fat. Is that too little?

  • no, that's fine!!!

  • Comment removed

  • how long do your leave in hair and can you send be the how much of each ingerdients you use of each

  • She said in the first video: two table spoons each of coconut cream and coconut oil melt those two together, stir, then add about 8oz plain yogurt.

    {I must say it looks to be an approximate measure, the bowl had about 12oz total of the ingredients she used}

Depending on the amount of hair, less hair more products more hair more products. It's in video with her showing the products she used for the "relaxer" before she began.

  • She did say about 8-12oz I only remembered the 8. I just went back and it looks to be about 14 or 16 oz in the bowl.

  • wow my hair is a lot like hers.. mine was softer when i was younger of course, probably like hers too, but i'd def like to try this natural relaxer! maybe it will help my hair grow some?.. maybe? lol

  • Do you rinse her hair out like you would do a lye/no lye relaxer, or do you leave it in??

  • you rinse this out

  • I applied it to dry hair just the way she demonstrated, then rinsed, shampoo'd using sulfate free shampoo and conditioned the ends and edges with a leave-in conditioner before detangling.

Which reminds me...thatgirrl5, you're detangling method needs a little tweaking, I think. Start AT the ends, not halfway up the length of her hair. I know the comb glides through from this treatment, but you still look heavy-handed. You're starting at the scalp, pulling through until you hit resistance...

  • Will your natural curl pattern return after a few months??

  • Youve done an excellent job!!! I'll definitely try this on me and my daughter's hair!

  • If you read her description box it says to help manage her daughters hair. Not all natural hair is easy to manage as far as combing especially this is probly less hurtful for the little girl when she gets her hair done. I don't think its like a self esteem issue or anything.

  • No, all hair is easy to manage, once people take the time to understand what their specific hair needs--and can break free from traditional notions of what manageability means.

  • Your missing the point boo boo the purpose is to HELP manage her hair! All hair isn't easy to manage and obviously this is her understanding of specific hair needs, "coconut cream natural relaxer. " Don't be so judgemental LoL PeAcE!

  • it's not really a relaxer... it's more of a deep conditioning treatment

  • Do you rinse it out or just let all the products sit?

  • I am wondering this too

  • she rinsed it out

  • like a relaxer, do you apply this before you wash? after you apply can you go about your own shampoo regimin? Also is the permentant?

  • i knw she did it b4 she washed it and she said its not permanant it las for 2-3 months

  • could u do a hair regimen video for urself?

  • oh ok thanks so much..what type of yogurt do you use?

  • i have to say it's nice to see a mother that doesn't parade her child's face all over her channel. i think it's unsafe to do that. it shows you are thinking about her safety. besides that, i love your use of products that are natural. interesting technique.

  • Great vid! Her hair is beautiful!

  • how long is the natural curl relaxer left on her hair? do you then wash this out, condition and style?

  • how much was the avocado butter? and how many oz was it?

  • My grandparents used to grater fresh coconut, boil to a paste and use as a hair treatment.

  • r they from the caribbean?

  • Wow, how does this work?! I am excited to try this now :). Hope i get good results too. Take care!!

  • i only use organic, unrefined coconut oil. the other stuff doesn't like my hair neither. let me know your results. i hope you try it.

  • Actually, all i eat, drink and do is organic! What brand coconut oil do you use? Maybe i am just doing something wrong and may not be the coconut oil. But then again, i really think my hair hates oil and loves creams. I want to try this though and yes i will let you know :). Thanks!!

  • Cool, i will let you know if i try it! I am thinking that i might :)

  • Hi I have been transitioing for almost 3 months and was wondering if this would be a good treatment on transitioning hair?

  • it is. I am 16 months post relaxer and it does 'soften' the newgrowth.

  • months or weeks?

  • Months. :)

  • Do you recommend doing both treatments more regularly than two months?

I have 3a hair that is prone to fizz and I'd like to get rid of it. Should I try it once a month?

  • How long do you leave the mixture on the hair? do I need a heat cap?

  • So there's not type of chemicals in this that loosen the curl pattern unnaturally right? Your daughter's hair is beautiful by the way. I wish my mom knew more about hair care when I was that age. God bless.

  • Comment removed

  • quick question did you leave it in or rinse it out?

  • rinsed out and cowashed

  • Hope not to have offended you cause you are doing an excellent job with your daughters hair. Also I really appreciate you sharing this video. Like I said is sounds/looks like something I will try or/and share with friends. Thank-you

    Peace and Blessings

  • OK... you can call this a relaxer in a way. It seems to be a good deep hair moisturizer/conditioner. It is only smoothing and defining her hair. Kind of like a better Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I will try it. Seems like a great treatment for hair. Sidebar food for thought: If you relax your hair, and mostly wear it straight, that is what little princess will want to do. Right now she knows she gets a "natural" relaxer, when older she will get a "real" relaxer like mom. Just a thought shared.

  • thank you for sharing your techniques! i cant wait to try this on my hair. i'm currently growing my hair out by wearing kinky two strand twists. i want to have at least 10 inches of hair before i wear it out.

  • omg!!! where were toy when I was a little girl...lol. You're video is great!

  • Hi i wrote to you about rinsing out the solution and you mentioned cow wash what is that? I am a guy and happend across your site by accident looking to enhance my wave pattern. After you wash out this solution how long does this new texture last before you apply it again. I have what my barber calls combination hair: fine, curly and kinky textures. my waves be the bomb when it's short but as it grows longer the kinks start to take over at the ends. I would appreciate some advise.

  • oh wow!!! thx 4 watching.

oh so sorry ppehsy, i misunderstood what u were asking... but, cowashing is using conditioner "only" instead of shampoo, as shampoos are harsh (contain sulfates) for curlier textured hair. "cowashing" is very popular. since this is not a chemical treatment, you can use this as often as u need to (i.e. once or twice a month or once every 3 months). it all depends on your own individual hair and the condition of your hair beforehand. hope this helps!!!

  • Do you think this will work on 4a/4b hair? I mean I think Im 3c, but Im not sure

  • yes, any hair type that wants to loosen the natural curl

  • This looks like a real cool idea but do you ever have to rinse it out it's got to be awfuly greasey with all that coconut oil almond butter shea butter avocado etc. what kind of shampoo do you use

  • thx 4 watching. i do mention that i rinse it out and cowash in the video. i use v05 moisture milks or silky experiences (conditioner) in her hair. i don't use almond butter at all, but i use coconut oil/shea butter/avocado butter mix that "moisturizes" her hair phenomenally, not greasy at all. this method works really well 4 her hair and i've seen tremendous growth from it.

  • What website would I be able to get the coconut creme and oil from?

  • Could you please repeat those sites again? Costal scents for the Shea Butter and Nature with love for the avacodo ?

  • yes...

  • Which shea butter do you get?

  • I noticed that I forgot to add the coconut oil. It will be in my next batch. It worked great anyway. Thank you again, so much!

  • Tried this on my hair and it worked great! I did not have to fight my hair to part it. I just used coconut cream in the can and some yogurt. I added a dash of salt, but I won't do that again. I have to get some shea butter. I just don't know how to use it in my hair, though. Thank you for this because I will never need to put a relaxer in my hair ever again. My hair was so easy to part and my curl definition was awesome. It looked and felt just like my hair when it was lightly texlaxed.

  • do you think you can post before and after pics..

  • yes, i'm actually going to do a tutorial really soon

  • I would categorize your daughter's hair as 3c/4a not 3a which is magic marker size curls.

  • we tried this on sat. with items we found at the market...and my daughters hair is hard. so i guess we have to order from your place in order for this to work. I wonder how long we gotta wait for the next natural laxer.

  • i'm sorry it didn't work for you. i can only speak on the brand that i used (from tropical traditions) these products are organic...i know the coconut oil has to be unrefined and the coconut cream is key as well.

unfortunately it did not work for you but i've tried it on many different hair types and their hair came out really silky.

  • Aww does it definitely have to be unrefined coconut oil? I have a block of refined waiting to be used up lol

Your daughter is a lucky little girl having a Mommy who takes such care and pride in her hair and only uses the best. I've started to make hair spritz and detanglers for my children, I'm hoping my 11 year old will be discerning when it comes to buying hair products when she grows up.

  • Coconut oil is protein based oil. Products like Aphogee that strengthen & rebuild hair that's breaking/weak are protein based. After using a protein treatment (such as aphogee) it ALWAYS has to be followed up w/a moisturizing DC treatment to make the hair soft again. If her hair turned out hard, she may already have a lot of protein on her hair & need a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment before and after you try this treatment, since as I said before cocount oil is high in protein.

  • melissa25125,

is protein good or bad for hair? is too much protein bad? does it make hair hard?

  • protein is good for your hair but if your going to use protein you have to moisturize your very well afterward so it doesn't break off.

  • u mention that after every protein treatment need to use a moisturizer deep conditioner...can u please list some good deep cond treatments

  • Did you shampoo and condition her hair after you applied the coconut cream natural relaxer or before? TIA

  • yes...i actually cowashed afterwards with v05 moisture milks or silky experiences

  • hi thatgirrl5. Does Coastal Scents still sell the Whipped Shea Butter? I only the unrefined "chunky" one listed on the website.

I watched the their videos on how to make it whipped but did not want to put the time in to do it. Too busy

  • yes, i used the whipped, it's been a few months though since i ordered it. i actually did a mix myself, with the shea butter, coconut oil and avocado butter, put it in a food processor and it was very creamy. i use that on my daughter's hair and when i wear my hair slicked back. VERY moisturizing...

  • This is what that copa stuff was supposed to do. Relax your hair without taking out your curls etc.

  • exactly...i remember that and "rio"...glad i didn't use it because i heard horror stories about it.

  • Yeah, Copa sucked (at least for me) and Rio lied about being natural or something like that and so many bw lost their hair with that crap.

  • I have 4b/4c hair. I tried the "cheaper" coconut relaxer. I went to Whole Foods store and got the Unrefined Coconut Oil by Spectrum Essentials, $8.99.

It's made for Hair/Skin. I microwaved 6 teaspoons and mixed it with my Dove intensive theraphy conditioner instead of the yogurt.

After applying, I pulled my hair in an afro puff with an Goody's Ouchless hairband. Covered my hair with a plastic cap and left on overnight.

After rinsing, used the hairband/puff to straight hair out.

  • The hairband helped the hair have a straight appearance when it is dried completely. (if you want to flat iron)

It made my hair soft and will continue to use this to help management my hair.

    Thanks,

  • i'm happy it worked for you!!! great idea...thanks for watching!!!

  • You are taking great care of her hair. I'm hoping to grow my baby fro out to her length. Any tips you can give will be appreciated.

  • i appreciate it...i really try to take great care of her hair as i am laying down the foundation for when she gets older. btw, i have no intention of putting a relaxer in her hair as well. the key is moisture...keeping the ends moisturized especially (learned the hard way about that one too)...not shampooing with harsh/drying shampoos (i cowash every week). i do prepoos with coconut oil (overnight on the weekends). i am going to post her whole regimen in the next week or so.

  • Wow. Thanks for this video. I have 4b/4c hair. I want to try this to see if I can relax my curl a litle.

When you do retouches, do you do the whole head or just the roots?

    Thanks.

  • since it's really not a chemical per se, i apply it to the whole head...it's very safe and non damaging. the hair will be softer and more manageable, not necessarily straight. it's penetrates the hair shaft for optimal conditioning. btw, thanks for watching!!!

  • I am defintely going to try this on my hair. Where can I get the coconut cream and also can you give me th emeasurements of each product? Thanks.

  • thanx 4 watching...u can get the coconut cream from tropicaltradition(dot)com and i put about 2 heaping tablespoons of each of the coconut cream and oil and then about 10-12 oz of yogurt

  • By the way, I think you're doing a great job of caring for your daughter's hair. People have become so obsessed with not combing their hair but my mother combed my hair and I do now as well. It was healthy then and it's healthy now. Her hair is BEAUTIFUL!

  • thanx...i take care of her hair the way my hair was taken care of when i was a little girl. i put bows and ribbons and style her hair the way a little girl's hair, in my opinion, should look. i am going to do another tutorial on her hair shortly so stay tuned for that.

  • i use a paddle brush, and put sof n free on her hair. That would be great if u could give some input. thanks

  • i haven't forgotten about u...i've been busy this week

  • hi your videos are really usefull, my daughter is mixed race and has very thick curly hair. she hates me brushing it but in her defence i havent a clue what im doing. dont suppose you know where i can the products from the uk??

  • i know this texture of hair is somewhat challenging. how are you brushing, with a bristle brush or paddle brush? are you keeping her hair moisturized?? moisturizing is key to keeping it healthy and not as frizzy...not sure where to purchase the products in the uk, but i'll ask around for you. i did order mine (coconut oil/cream) from tropicaltraditions(dot)com. if you'd like, i can help you set up a regimen for your daughter. it was trial and error for me until i found what worked best.

  • well i can give you a tip, when you comb or brush her, make sure that you comb or brush from the ends up to the root.

  • did u watch my first video...it shows me carefully coming from the bottom up...i do know how to properly comb hair, but i appreciate your concern. otherwise, it wouldn't be as healthy as it is

  • i meant "combing"...i do know how to spell too (lol)

  • it was a 16 oz container, and i used a little over a half, so about 8 - 12 oz.

  • I am over here cringing at the way her hair is being detangled :o(

  • not sure if i edited it out or not...i had previously removed all her tangles out her hair...i was just going through it...her hair is very healthy and i know how to properly detangle. i appreciate your concern though, no need to cringe (lol)

  • I think the person commented that way, because as you bring the comb through the hair you can hear the SNAP! But, I believe it is the comb hitting the back of the chair which is metal.

In Part 1 I saw how you detangled her hair using a wide tooth comb and than using a smaller comb. It was very thorough. And it is obvious from your daughters hair growth and healthy look that you havent been ripping hair out. Lol. Thanks.

  • thanx for clarifying...i haven't actually looked at the video again to accurately respond but yes, i did take care in detangling, as i always do, and yes, the comb was hitting the back of the metal chair...

  • your daugther has beautiful hair

  • Absolutely wonderful video! Where do you purchase your coconut cream & avocado butter? I've never heard of this. Great idea!

  • thanks...i purchased the coconut cream from tropical traditions (dotcom)...the avocado butter from "from nature with love" (dotcom)...let me know how it works for you!!!

  • oh thanx...i try my best and intend to keep it natural and work with it!!!

  • I love that you take such good care of your baby's hair...every mother that has a child with "black natural" should take a page from your book!

  • does this work with any hair type
