The Su-25 Frogfoot (which is the Russian "equivalent") is based on the A-9A which is the aircraft that competed, and LOST against the A-10. The Su-25 can hit Mach 1, but ONLY in a steep dive, and not in level flight. The A-10 can fly with half of one wing missing and one engine, the Su-25 can't. There IS NO competitor to the A-10. Plain...and...simple

It's such a shame. There actually are good reasons for the A-10 flying sub-sonic only. It's not like they where building that thing and kinda out of super sonic jet engines so they simply went for what they happened to have around at the time. These turbo fan engines actually are an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Stupid announcer
