  • Great song. But I think they should have had Pat do the guitar solos on that Strat. I would have had a much more bluesey sound. Instead they used the other one with more of a rock buzz.

  • I feel bad for Michael Macdonald cause I don't listen or watch any doobie posts with him in it and I'm sure lots of other original doobies fans do the same.

  • Great song, and the guitar solo

  • Billy Payne on the b.

  • I grew up with these guys. And I missed them when they were in Sydney this year... much sadness :o\ Now I'm teaching my 19 y.o. son the guitar - starting with the Doobies! Thanks for sharing!

  • I am sure all responding here have heard their stuff that was never played on radio...some truly incredible tunes...timeless

  • I can't believe how short Patricks Simmon's hair is..

  • I seen these guys with Commander Cody and his lost planet airmen and the Climax Blues Band in Minneapolis in about 1971 or 1972.

  • One of my all time favorites from the captain and me.

  • Dark Eyed Cajun Woman by TheDoobieBrothers~ブルージーギターの見本!~キャプテン・アンド・ミーを名盤たらしめたネ!

  • absolutely hauntingly wonderful. One of the songs and albums that i can listen to all day and never get tired of.

  • This was badass! The guitarist was totally zoning!

  • Usually I like live recording over originals, however this one seems a little "routine" not impressed at all.

On the original, Tom actually does some David Gilmour style guitar work. But this version, to many notes, and wrong guitar sound.

But what do I know, I'm just a dude on a laptop.

  • @guitardds No, I know what you're saying. While I still think this is a good live version, what happens is we get used to the album cut, because we listen to it over and over. Certain sounds/tones we start to attach to feelings/experiences. So when we hear the live version, we are sometimes let down when the artist deviates at all from the recording. But with all the studio work (remixing, editing, etc.), it makes it all most impossible to duplicate the original recording

  • I use to live in Anchorage,Alaska in the late 80's and remember Tom liked to hang out in the local bars along 4th avenue. In 1973 the Doobie Bros put on a great show at the sports Arena in Anchorage to support the release of "The Captain & Me '

  • One of the greatest albums ever recorded. So many great works on it. My favorite from the 70's. I feel this was a pinnacle of guitar rock bands, then they went pop! Man did that suck.

  • Orsum strait bak 70's stylz

  • HOw is it that Tom Johnston never got together with David Crosby? I bet they could've {could?} make a good track or two.

  • yeah!

  • I prefer Tom's 1970s look.

  • Shit, another classic from "the captain and me", fucking incredible album, never get tired of hearing the ENTIRE thing! *goosebumps*

  • Check out this version dcnguitar

  • This is Tommy's song (albeit a "tribute" to BB King's "Thrill Is Gone") - so he can play it however he likes!

  • He should get a better amp. That little hartke dosent do him justice.

  • @ronwell438 I love this tune. What amp was it on originally?

  • @tallorder9 Not sure what kind of amp but it does have a Fendery sound to it.

  • @ronwell438 Clapton's been using fender amps. I like the Suhr Badger.

  • Jeff Baxter wasn't on the original version of this song. He didn't join the band until years later. Pat Simmons does all the lead work on that track.

  • Johnston did all the guitar parts on the studio version.

  • Are you sure? I thought Pat did the little leads in between the vocals. I agree that Tommy is probably playing the solo. I wish there was a way to find out who played what on the original Doobie Records. I can mostly tell if it's Tommy or Pat playing, but some parts are too hard to tell. I'm also curious who's playing drums. If it's one drum track, I can't tell if it's John, Mike, or (later) Keith. There should be a website...

  • If there is a version of this song from Rockin Down the Highway, The Wildlife Concert I wish someone would post it. It is the best version of this song I have ever heard.

  • I have it posted, I believe.

  • Unable to find it my friend.

  • I thought this was excellant, especially considering Jeff Skunk Baxter wasn't their. This song is a all time classic.

    J.R.

  • I agree with Lollygaggle

  • tempo is off too

  • Without wishing to appear in any way critical, this is a bit of a racket compared to the original. The guitar work is what holds this highly emotive piece togther & it is simply missing in this poor rendition.

The audience make it seem like it was performed at a Sunday afternoon scout's fete.

  • totally agree - great band, great song, shocking version.

Where is that jangling telecaster that I know and love??????

  • @quedgeminkey The metal lead lacks a little.

  • @quedgeminkey PRS axes are OK. We're trying to figure out what amp they used on this.A lot of bands were using Marshalls at that time.

  • @tallorder9 I am no expert. I certainly can't say for sure. But that sure does sound to me like Marshalls. That tube sound is unique. That sound can be mimic'd but certainly this sounds like the real thing.

PS Marshall isnt the only amp to use Tubes. Several high end amps were still using tubes at this time.(and Marshall made low end solid state amps too) In my opinion Marshalls were the best though.

  • @rosepetal108

most good amps these days still use tubes, I've got 2, a fame and marshall...and a solid state fender, but it really depends on what effects and set up you have on your guitar, there's no saying for sure what amp it is by listening to it.

I have to say I hate the tone they use on their guitars. one's really tinny and one sounds too fake distorted.

  • @zer01ife You are the expert. I just listen and enjoy.

  • @rosepetal108

fair enough, I guess it's not always necessary to figure out the gear : ) I'm hardly an expert though.

  • @zer01ife The real question is, "Where is the studio version of this song on YouTube?"

    I cant find it anywhere.

  • @zer01ife If you have a pre amp feeding into your head you can susatin hits out of this world. Steve vai doesw it alot and the effect can be used in many ways especially with a wah wah pedal. Alot of artists use 300 amp heads, but a pre amp will take that decibal and sustain it as long as you want it and remove any doubt that any guitar can soubnd as good as the to of the line. I use a Gibson Les paul to rock and a Fender Strat to Jazz & Rock...go figure:)
