  • Perfect word for mr. Stephens...pathetique.

  • What lovely sexual tension.

  • I always find this scene frustrating. To me, this is where Miss Kenton badly overplayed her hand. What was she thinking? Didn't she know that being that aggressive would yield a poor result? I have to agree with Stevens here. If you want to be alone, you don't want someone forcing their way into your space, way up in your face, and demanding to know what you're "up to." We could even mark the decline of things from this point on. In the end, though, he was a fool to forever deny such a beauty.

  • @Pilgrimsarbour Yes I know. if I would be the housekeeper I wouldn't dare to behave like that. But the whole point of the storie was that she had a mind of her own and said anything that came up in her head. She was the opposite of him. And because he was quite introverterted, never expressing hit feelings the more she rebelled.

  • the remains of the day porno is worth watching

mr stevens ravishes miss kenton on the mahogany table

  • I read the novel on which the book is based. It is very very beautiful and effective. the movie is very good too and actually Hopkins is one of the best actors. He has excellent command of his acting tools.

  • i think he made the right choice, she doesn't love him as much as he loves her. she's more interested in fixing him than falling in love with him.

  • @shirerat1138 but he ended up miserable

  • @shirerat1138 I don't agree. They both loved each other very deeply, the scene at the bus stop shows this perfectly. Sometimes human weaknesses like: pride, obstinacy, fear, spite drive into sad-end, love is a risk and non of them took it. When they realised their mistake it was too late for anything ...

  • @profesortutka for all the people who DIDNT watch the movie, THANKS to you for revealing it's ending. really.

  • absolutely, crushingly heartbreaking... yet potent and very sexy. it never fails to turn me on AND make my eyes wet.

  • Fantastic scene. They're simply two of the greatest living actors and one of the best screen couple in the last 50 years. I still hope there would be the chance to see them working together again because their chemistry is incredible.

  • Regretfully, I must add that Mr. Stevens has failed to discern a very important truth:

Namely, that Miss Kenton could do a lot more to further his education than that book ! Ha, ha.

    Oh yeah !

  • She's hot in her way; and the perfect woman for him, in a variety of ways.

Go for it, Mr. Stevens !

  • i think he was right not to kiss her, she didn't love him as much as he loved her anyway.

  • I only have a question, I hope someone answers me: is there in England this type of butlers until the present day? I mean this devoted type?

  • I read to further my education!

    sooooo lying,,,,but so true!

  • Kiss her!..This scene is so sad and intense at the same time...how i wished he kissed her.....

  • You're certainly right, chrisjones! What a intensity of erotism in a few words, in a few looks! And poor, poor Anthony Hopkins, incapable of kissing an offering woman, full of an English beauty, that marvelous Emma Thompson! Poor, poor man!

  • This is the kind os scene that only great, great actors coud do. Less is more. They were just unique.

Marvelous scene, one of the best in cinema history.

  • such an erotic but sad scene-just kiss her you fool!

  • misplaced loyalty to his master, rather than living his life as his heart tells him to. such a shame and the ending at the bus stop is heart wrenching, also when he lets the pigeon free he lets his soul die in that house.

  • Such a beautiful film, sorely lost out at the Oscars

  • best scene in the best film

    amazing acting

  • I love this film, and this scene is one of my favourites, a true moving drama about love and loss, im so tired of romance films where they always find each other and everything ends up perfect. this is totally the opposite. there is another film that is a bit like this with Clint Eastwood and Meryl streep called, Bridges of Madison county.

  • ooh I have seen that. That's also a beautiful movie. sad ending

  • I'm pleased it is your favourite scene, but it is a base synopsis. I will say again; look at his hand. It is the pivotal moment of the film. His reluctance and ineptitude and desire all encapsulated in the movement of a few fingers. Stunning acting. Sympathetic acting in a gut wrenching scene.

  • This is my favorite scene from the movie. It sums up the relationship between the two characters IMHO. She's the agressor, they both dig each other, but he won't/can't close

  • I wish they could make more movies like this:)

  • @waterclear26 yes I wish the same, try reading the book it is one of the best and it is worth reading so so beautiful

  • Why has no one posted the whole movie yet?

  • Thanks Chirpy for posting this. It is so great that I took the trouble to read all comments. Someone, presumably an American called it "cute". Well. It is, without doubt, the finest piece of acting ever, by both, but especially Hopkins. Don't just watch his eyes, but his hands. It encapsulates the whole film there and then. And those who think they should have kissed are idiots. Just watch his hands and then you will understand the whole film, pinned there as he is.

  • Thanks for your insult. Is your sense of humour pinned too?

  • In a interview at the Actors Studio with James he was asked about how difficult it was to make suchscenes like this one with very little words yet conveying so many feelings. He said he just stands there and it is the audience that put the feelings there...so it is us who add more or less feeling to this scene,,,it was an amazinginterview...must look it up here too...

  • Kiss her, stupid!

Ehm...sorry, I like this scene. Great movie.

  • indeed, every time I watch this for one minute I think: kiss her!!! Or even kiss him! And then he starts talking about his education... Oh, stupid! She's teasing him a bit, she's almost begging him to kiss her and he's hust too locked up.. (because you can see him looking at her when she's so close)

  • This scene is so poignant! Sir Anthony Hopkins is just outstanding! Great moment! They should have kissed ? - Yes but then the scene wouldn`t have been as romantic. Love that moment at 2.00 where his right hand moves a little as if wanting to stroke her cheek! *sigh* thanks for posting!

  • I keep watching this over and over...it's so perfect.

  • Anthony Hopkins was born for this role, what a performance!

  • this is a great scene! SO CLOSE!!!!

  • Hopkins is one hell of an actor! respect...

  • Oh my God! What a scene and the tense and feelings it includes. Look at his eyes when she tries to get the book, and how he surrender when she looks at him. Ok he is old but not less sexy.

  • It is one of the most sensual scenes of the movie filled with sexual tension which he doesn't know how to relate to a woman. She definitely wants him but can't through feelings which are hidden from her and from himself. It is about people making choices in life. Makes you think!

  • Amazing scene alright, and I agree about his eyes! Unfortunately this vid is too small to really see it, its needs to be appreciated on a big screen.

  • we all know such scenes...

    and to keep our demeanor

    ;)

  • I adore this scene! It couldn't be more perfect. There is so much want and regret in Sir Tony's eyes.

  • Kiss her, you fool!

  • i know!

they could have been so happy - they are perfect for each other

    anybody else agree?

  • great scene. being irish i look at this as a reason to love the english people, emma thompson is delightful, the way she charges in, so womanly, almost funny. one of the previous comments was right i think, the performances are monumental.

  • É a melhor cena do filme (is the best scene of the film)

    SP Brasil

  • Gyönyörű pillanat! - IMÁDOM!

    (Beautiful moment! - I ADORE!)

  • i love this film:( sooo sad.....heart breaking!!!!!!

just shows how much he loves her aye

  • Good stuff. We must realise of course that the English were known for being reserved and they were very conservative back then. AND, he himself made the rule that frowned upon members of the household falling in love with each other. (See the scene of Ms Kenton's initial interview- they discussed that topic then).

  • so awesome, he realizes that she wouldn't really love him as much as he loves her and that you can't always get the girl.

    thanks for the video

  • look at the way he looks at her when she struggles to get the book... can't believe he could stand and repressed his feelings to her... i love anthony hopkins. i wish he and emma will do another movie together..

  • why didn't they kiss?! well, despite that, the way they look at each other, it seems that they kiss already...

my favourite scene of the film...love it

  • The best ever scene in film history...brilliant acting!! And yes, the music is perfect, and that look...heartbreaking.

  • The way he looks at her at 1:40... Oh my God. Why couldn't he just kiss her. This upsets me so much. What monumental performances.

  • man anthony hopkins is the only actor that makes me cry. that scene - he has to try and cheapen his interest in a love story by saying reading "furthers his education". anyone seen shadowlands? whoah - what a weepie.

  • I have never wanted to see two characters kiss more than these two in this film. My heart raced the first time I watched this, its a brilliant scene, and the music matches perfectly with the level of intensity and emotion displayed. Anthony Hopkins is a genius and in his day, extremely sexy.

  • I keep watching this scene! The tension is so big. I always wants him or her to kiss the other, although I know that it's so beautiful because they don't.

  • oh I love this scene! This scene is so cute. How can you NOT love Anthony Hopkins after this scene. And Emma Thompson rocks ofcourse.

  • The end of this scene, when the two are standing so close in the dark, and she touches his hand to tear the book away from him, is supercharged with repressed emotion and sexuality.

  • I suppose the movie is an exploration of the old English class system and of a man who is its willing prisoner. The man happens also to be completely repressed emotionally. His duties in the household bar him from having a private life. The tragedy is that the lovely young woman is unable to break through these barriers. Ah, the sadness, the regret.

  • Perhaps not merely the duties of the households but an immense personal reticence as well prevents him from forming personal attachments.

On a different note, I absolutely recommend the book (though I love the movie more!)

  • Pure brilliance. Magnificent. Please Emma & Tony make a new film together! All that sexual tension needs closure!!!

  • I can't see that there really is any "sexual" tension, it's more like romantic tension...Stevens is at the point of no return here...we want him to break down and confess himself, but he goes the other way because...because, why? That's why this movie is so heartbreaking!

  • One of my favourite movie-scenes ever. On the DVD-commentary Emma Thompson tells that the sexual tension was so great every time they did the scene that she nearly fainted.

  • he is completely paralyzed and afraid.

  • This scene is the best one in the movie. I can't believe people want it to end differnetly either. That's the beauty of it that they don't kiss. I want them to kiss, but at the same time it's soo good that they don't

  • I think the scene was filmed in a way to make [at least some] people want it to end differently. The tension is part of the spell it casts.

Personally, I'm glad they don't kiss but I understand why others feel differently. Not everyone thinks unheard melodies are sweeter.

  • Very well said. There's a beauty in the tension. One we can relate to. After all, don't most of our desires in life go unfulfilled?

  • I can't believe people want this scene to end differently. It's obvious that most of this people like the typical, stupid hollywood bullcrap and can't appreciate a work of art like this!!!

  • Scena genialna ! szkoda tylko że nawet nie próbował jej pocałować<wnerw>

  • Oh! The scene should have ended differently! :)

  • I KNOW .. like a kiss for example ;)

  • hey is this posted on the net anywheer?

  • AHHHHHH KISS HERR KISS HIM SOMEBODY KISS SOMEBODY!!!

anyway, i've loved this movie for YEARS, and every time i watch that scene, i think: "IT CAN HAPPEN!" but it never does...

  • ooooooh thanks for post the video !!! It's a fantastic movie, and this is my favorite scene...such a tension (sexual tension !!) between them...and nothing hapenned !!! IF ONLY I COULD CHANGE IT !!! KISSSSS HERRRRRRRRRRR !!! it devasted my heart !!!

  • AGREED!;)

  • I knew I would find this scene over here, great.

  • I so want that scene to end differently every time I see it.

  • I love this movie, one of my favourites

  • I love this movie.

  • An extremely beautiful, intelligent and sensitive film.

The setting, the plot, and the acting is spectacular. Emma Thompson's sad look in the back of the bus near the end of the film is the saddest, most haunting look on a person's face I have ever seen in 30 years of film watching. Magnificent.

  • My Fav movie...thanks for this.

  • THANK YOU!!! for posting this! I love this scene, and for some reason I couldn't stop thinking about it in the middle of the night. What else is YouTube for, really?

  • your welcome....well it is a scene that stays with you ;)

  • Could you also post the end where she's on the bus and they say goodbye for the last time??? I really want to see it! Please!

  • yes please someone post that I can't believe it hasn't been posted yet. That's like one of the most haunting and sad moments in cinema history. the look on Emma Thompson's face as she's standing on the bus *tears*

  • @thatdrattedcat Exactly! A great comment!

  • One of my favorite scenes(real favorite one is towars the end at the bus station under the rain...cry everytime.

In this scene the tension is unbearable, but no one makes a move...he looks so fragile almost letting his guard down...but he somehow manages to ask her to leave him alone just when you think he will let go...dont get me started I could go on for hours...seize the day guys!! when we let a moment go it might go for ever...

  • Oh. This is my favorite scene in the movie. Thank you for posting this!

  • Great book. Great film. Great scene. In an instant, the characters lives could have gone way...but went the other.

  • i love it

  • yummie... hahaha

  • LOL! I guess they will show when Lecter first started eating people - liver with fava beans and pepsi haha....then he advanced to wine LOL. What an exciting movie...Lecter's transition from pepsi to wine. haha...

  • Yeah... it would take away the... 'omg... what has become of him?" at the end of the film :P ;)

  • haha exactly...there would be no surprise. We already know he eats people! *yawns* haha....

  • hahahaha, yeah, exactly what i thought too... and i dont believe that the film will be a great succes either... though i probably am going to watch it with another friend of mine who's also a big fan of Hannibal :D

  • yea it wont be because Hopkins is not in it haha, thats how people view Lecter - as the the intelligent, sexy, creepy, older Lecter. Not a young man....who is developing into all those things haha. It just wont work. It will look silly...

  • nice scene!

Anthony is such a good actor! So is Emma Thompson... i can be deeply irritated by her (character), not a lota people can do that to me hahaha

  • good - that they are indeed ;) LOL, they both were annyoing - KISS ALREADY!!! idiots! LOL!

  • yeah man hahahaha!

  • They are *sooooo* close in this scene. It takes my breath away ;)

  • I never saw the film, not completly, only parts of it, but this indeed took my breath away too!

I probably would have gone for it if i were her LMAO ;o)

  • I hope you watch the whole movie one day, its one the finest.

LOL...me too!!! I couldnt have resisted Hopkins!!

  • i sure do hope it has an happy ending ;D

i will watch the whole film some time :)

BTW, did you also hear about the plans for a new Hannibal Lector film? I'm not sure if it's true but i heard that there be a new film about the growing up of Hannibal Lector, and Anthony would do the voice telling the story...

  • Thats a rumor, Anthony will not be narrating the film. I think thats a good decison on his part. That film is called "Young Hannibal" is in the making.

  • when i first heard bout the film i was really just not happy bout it, but when i heard he'd be telling the story i thought it would maybe be nice... though yeah, i guess it's a good call not to do it... Hannibal is great as he is... this might ruin it...

  • yea I wasnt happy about it either and thats why I was glad he wasnt going to be a part it. Lecter was a great role and will be remembered forever. Dragging it on and on is not wise especially since it seems to overshadow his other amazing work already anyway. Most people only know him for Hannibal Lecter.

I dont think the movie will be great but well..its see.

  • Classic scene from this movie. Is the butler uptight, or what!?

  • very uptight! haha.....yes this scene is a classic.

  • I love this movie.
