Watching this video was hard work, with me not knowing any French and not being a native English speaker! Watching this required me to really focus because she was talking very fast which required me to read just as fast, but the story made it worthwhile!
What a great man. Honestly, I hate french (I'm not british, I'm flemish. And I hate it because I have a lot of trouble learning it and for no other reason) but I didn't mind because that man is a hero. Seriously, respect.
Very enjoyable! I have wanted access to non-English speaking media for a long time. What is the French or Spanish or German TED or YouTube? I hope more videos such as these are uploaded.

The real scandal is that in TEDxKids, held in Waterloo, the mayor of the city held his 5 minutes speach in French. If there is one city mayor who should speak English, it's Waterloo's.
Hm, I wonder why he had to take all of the burden on himself, though. Could he not have simply shared the method of forging with the rest of the resistance, so that they could increase overall output?

@i337gamer Idiot. You do realize the world is bigger than your mother's basement? There are hundreds of languages out there. Are you American? Because if you are you're not doing well for the "Americans are stupid" stereotypes the world gives you.

guys... whats all the hating just cuz she's speaking french? there's nothing wrong with that, she was raised in france and so she speaks french.. thats just natural.. and more importantly she's sharing a story of an unspoken hero!
@psilocyberspaceman I just can't give a blanket approval to criminal behavior. On TED ppl are used to approve and applaud and portraying this man as a hero is dangerous. What if he forged birth certificates to get illegal immigrants citizenship? Would you be happy to have fake citizens with the same rights as you even though all western countries are over-run with immigrants from distant places with different cultures and religions and languages? Where do you draw the line?
@Khamomil You initially stated that you couldn’t applaud the man’s actions, even if they were for a good cause. Now you are arguing your POV by presenting hypothetical actions of the man, which spirals into a fantasy of all western countries being overrun by immigrants. If you can’t approve criminal behavior, then obviously you are against all states built on death and violence, or maybe you have a different definition of criminal behavior.
@psilocyberspaceman I was only presenting 2 opposite viewpoints of the consequences of forging birth certificates: the POV of the exile and the POV of the citizen in the host country because right now, and this is FACT, not fantasy, Europe and the USA are being overrun by immigrants. All states have waged war so what? Are you saying all laws are to be ignored if the state that passed them has blood on its hands? The rule of law is what makes nations civilized my friend.
@Khamomil Funny, USA and Canada are both countries based entirely on immigration. However, when I mention states built on death an violence, this doesn’t necessarily mean from war. In fact, if I don’t agree to the public school system and decide not to pay tax to support it, authorities will enter MY home, initiate force to remove me from my home, if I resist, I might even be killed, is that what you refer to as a 'civilized' nation?
@MrEddieChaos What if he denied help to all non-jews, or charged them a lot of money, while helping other jews for free? Would you like that? Would you still think he's a hero? And it is quite likely cuz most jews consider us goyim lower forms of life, not quite human, and they have no qualms in committing crimes against us for this reason. Plus his daughter is not a neutral reporter. And how do we know Adolfo is his real name and he's Argentinian, he could have fake documents too.
@liquidminds Is there a rule at TED that requires all speakers to speak in English? I'd rather listen to her with translation than have to listen to half broken and heavily accented English. Besides, language isn't the point of TED talks...it's what each speaker has to bring and share with everyone. If all you care about is what language they're speaking, you're doing it wrong.
@liquidminds Seems more like the audience cares about the actual story than the medium on which it's presented.
Also, if you haven't noticed, this was recorded at TED Paris so it seems more like she's speaking to a French audience.
Besides, why is this such a huge deal to you? It's an international conference with international guest speakers discussing "ideas worth spreading", not "who speaks the superior language".
@TheRipePunani In some case you are correct... Just if the talker speaks in his own language, because his people are known for believing their own country is the best in the world, and everyone has to learn their language, I do have a problem with it.
Considering the ignorance to other countries, the french are the 1800s version of 20th century americans. Just that they seemed to have forgotten that there hasn't been anything good coming out of france for a few 100 years...
@liquidminds Every country has people who still think their country is the best or their language is the best or their government is the best etc. It's a little bit of a broad generalization to just pin on only the French.
@TheRipePunani maybe it's just that it's one of the few countries, where I couldn't find a single person thinking differently..
I even know examples, where people asked a question in english, and the french answered in french, showing that even if they could speak english, they just reject doing so.
I know a french guy, who didn't learn the language in 10 years living in another country!!!
both examples, I never heard from any other country in the world!
@tehcexymeowmix it's Technology Entertainment Design... not technologie Divertissement conception
Looking at other speakers before her, that couldn't speak english, I found out there are people you can pay for standing beside you and saying what you just said in a language that is appropriate to the event. I guess they call them translators....
@liquidminds Amigo!... you are wrong! ... do you speak another language ??? I asume not... this is TED paris, why should it be spoken in english ? I hate you people who think everybody should speak english. I once saw a guy in France (the guy was from USA) asking for a whopper in a Mcdonalds, he was screaming and talking shit to the girl who didnt speak english, he should be the one speaking french since he is not in his country.
TED is international, you should to, learn another language!
@edgarinv I do speak 3 languages. My mothertounge isn't english.
As a matter of fact, France is the country in the western world, with the least people speaking foreign languages. The only people, that wouldn't talk another language, even if they could, just out of principle.
and the only ones, who act as if they didn't understand you talking french, just because your ponounciation isn't 100% perfect.
@liquidminds cool... i speak 3 also, and english isnt my mothertounge... but I could say to you that I've studied in France for a year... and.... you have to take two different language courses, english is forced to be taken, the other one you choose wich.
And YES you need to have a nearly 100% pronounciation when speaking french because the language demands it... for example is not the same "vite" and "bite" if you dont make the V sound you could be saying "Cock" xD
@edgarinv so all you are saying is that french are so troubled with their own language, that they created a paranoid fear of misspronouncing other languages?
@liquidminds Yes... but no... french are troubled just for being french thats for shure... but their range of frecuencies within their language gives them difficulties to pronounce several sounds... like the " J " or "R" in spanish, its IMPOSIBLE for them to do it, they need years of practice to do a noise that is near but not the same.
@edgarinv so the french are language-impaired, and that's why it's politicaly incorrect to mock their disability?
Well.. eventhough I don't agree with it, I can live better with "you are right, but you shouldn't say so" than "you are wrong, french are the friendliest, most foreignloving people in the world"....
@edgarinv Please don't use the word impossible so lightly. I've learned lot's of foreign weird sounds without needing that much time. I'm no genius. Other surely can do it too. You can argue that most can't, but don't say it's impossible please.
@raydredX You are right... IMPROBABLE then... but hey... i know a lot of french who where trying to learn english for 3 year and the couldnt make the sound "J" in spanish..... wich is this...
@edgarinv Hm? They call it a velar, but then they use the symbol for uvular and pronounce a uvular. O.o
Also I can do that, but I still don't exactly get where you define the line between the Voiceless Uvular Trill and the Voiceless Uvular Fricative.
The only sounds I have trouble with are vowels I think. Also fluent bilabial trills and non-glottalized ejectives are among the most challenging consonants. They're pretty easy compared to a fluent vowel use for me though.
@raydredX well.. hmm in Spain the "j" is very strong... here in Mexico, the "j" is soft with no vibration... you can do both, is the same.
Spanish vowels are easy I think... we just have 5 with no changes. French vowels are very hard to do it the right way, specially the nasal ones, that was the most difficult things I deal with in France xD.. and also the difference between V and B... mexican spanish has forgot the difference.
@eccothedancer yes, i saw... he does speak another language ... thats cool... I speak french and spanish also 3 languages like him... but Im not a douche!
@edgarinv Remember that you should be the one speaking Hungarian, next time you visit Hungary, or to learn German next time you visit Germany. Ever been to Iceland?
TED is international, you should to (I'll go out on a limb and say with this "to" you meant "too" and NOT call you a fucking ignorant whiny bitch for not being able to learn another language), learn another language!
@Zbenesch Im sorry for my errors while writing... Im not perfect nor my english... And YES when in Germany I tried to speak german, when in greece, greek, Italian in italy and so on (Ive failed to do that in Prague, Holland, and some parts of spain they have languages that are very hard to understand)... I mean a few words like food, toilets, water, how much it cost, you can easily find this words on google and its pronounciation, people actually like you more for just even trying.
Although I have no problems reading some subtitles I have to say this is the only TED talk that I've seen so far that is not in English, so it does seem like a novelty to me. Of course some people will take it badly, that is to be expected of those with lesser minds.
@liquidminds Wow petty little man, while the rest of the world hate on the English and Americans for the atrocious evils they perform against other people.
You simply hate other people merely for speaking differently than you. Very low!
@lordmetroid no I hate people for not speaking the common language which most of us non-french speak. To assume your language must be automaticly accepted is incredibly arrogant and self-centered. The french didn't even promote the study of english or any other foreign language untill recently. So yeah the rest of the world has a right to hate the french for only talking in french when everyone else tries to learn something of each other.
@SpookyFan Yes obviously Chinese has been the most used language all over the world for the past 100 years in commerce *rolls eyes* and yes TEDTalks is orientated towards chinese speaking individuals...
@lordmetroid not for speaking differently. For rejecting any other language than their own.
I speak 3 languages. (french not included) and I am continuing to learn even more.
That's why I hate people that believe their own language is the best in the world, and have the ignorance to demand everyone else to learn that language.
English is international, because it's so damn simple, that everyone can learn it in a very short time.
@liquidminds Just because English is one of the most common languages in the world does not necessarily make it superior and just because the French just made it necessary to learn other languages in recent times does not make them ignorant. Cultures are just different that way. Doesn't mean they're better or worse than one another.
Also, no one is demanding you learn French. That's why they have subtitles. If they really wanted you to learn French they'd just leave the video as it is.
Jeg kan nok sprog i forvejen. Hvis det er meningen TED skal appellere til et bredt publikum, så skal de snakke et fælles sprog. Hun kan da ikke regne med at nogen tager hende seriøst når hun ikke engang gider snakke engelsk.
The reason I understand and speak Dutch, English and French is the fact that in Flanders (wich is just half of Belgium and absolutely tiny) got taught French as a second language since the age of 10. And due to a strange historic turn of events, all our international media (sit-coms, movies…) get subtitled. Dubbed content (of any kind) just gives me the heebie-jeebies. I'm just lucky.
Derfor min kommentar.
We need to realise that we are humans and countries, borders, ideologies etc are irrelevant. Making war is the most pointless activity we as humans can do.
@Rundfunk90 Daniel Cohn-Bendit. A German/French politician and co-founder of the international Green Movement. Also, together with Joshka Fisher, one of the leading activists of the May 68 uprisings in Paris, West Berlin, Frankfurt and Milan. Once known as Dany le Rouge because of his socialist leanings, he is today the representative of the Greens in the European Parliament. All in all a pretty funky dude.
Great talk, her father really was a bad-ass (hell just being able to solve what other "great minds" failed to do with white-out is bril, and to save lives at it tops the whole thing off).

I'm not sure I could applaud a man who forged documents all his life, even for a good cause.
Khamomil 5 months ago
@Khamomil Either you are brainwashed useful idiot like your masters would call you or you are one of the authoritarian tyrants yourself.
Why do you side with evil?
lordmetroid 5 months ago
@Khamomil ?And what would your reason be?
psilocyberspaceman 5 months ago
@psilocyberspaceman I just can't give a blanket approval to criminal behavior. On TED ppl are used to approve and applaud and portraying this man as a hero is dangerous. What if he forged birth certificates to get illegal immigrants citizenship? Would you be happy to have fake citizens with the same rights as you even though all western countries are over-run with immigrants from distant places with different cultures and religions and languages? Where do you draw the line?
Khamomil 5 months ago
@Khamomil You initially stated that you couldn’t applaud the man’s actions, even if they were for a good cause. Now you are arguing your POV by presenting hypothetical actions of the man, which spirals into a fantasy of all western countries being overrun by immigrants. If you can’t approve criminal behavior, then obviously you are against all states built on death and violence, or maybe you have a different definition of criminal behavior.
psilocyberspaceman 5 months ago
@psilocyberspaceman I was only presenting 2 opposite viewpoints of the consequences of forging birth certificates: the POV of the exile and the POV of the citizen in the host country because right now, and this is FACT, not fantasy, Europe and the USA are being overrun by immigrants. All states have waged war so what? Are you saying all laws are to be ignored if the state that passed them has blood on its hands? The rule of law is what makes nations civilized my friend.
Khamomil 5 months ago
@Khamomil Funny, USA and Canada are both countries based entirely on immigration. However, when I mention states built on death an violence, this doesn’t necessarily mean from war. In fact, if I don’t agree to the public school system and decide not to pay tax to support it, authorities will enter MY home, initiate force to remove me from my home, if I resist, I might even be killed, is that what you refer to as a 'civilized' nation?
psilocyberspaceman 5 months ago
@Khamomil you can't applaud a man who saved peoples lives at great personal risk?
MrEddieChaos 5 months ago
@MrEddieChaos What if he denied help to all non-jews, or charged them a lot of money, while helping other jews for free? Would you like that? Would you still think he's a hero? And it is quite likely cuz most jews consider us goyim lower forms of life, not quite human, and they have no qualms in committing crimes against us for this reason. Plus his daughter is not a neutral reporter. And how do we know Adolfo is his real name and he's Argentinian, he could have fake documents too.

Is there a law in France, that they have to stay the only People in the world, speaking their own language, wherever they are?
It's TED... It's international... learn english like every other Speaker from every other damn country that ever spoke on TED....
no wonder noone likes the french....
liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds hypocrisy is great, isn't it?
Is there a law in TED that eveyone has to speak english? Or is it just an example for blind hubris on your side?
btw: learning french helps a lot :) and there are subtitles so what are you complaining about?
photographer85 5 months ago
@liquidminds Is there a rule at TED that requires all speakers to speak in English? I'd rather listen to her with translation than have to listen to half broken and heavily accented English. Besides, language isn't the point of TED talks...it's what each speaker has to bring and share with everyone. If all you care about is what language they're speaking, you're doing it wrong.
TheRipePunani 5 months ago 2
@TheRipePunani
I prefer native audio in any case, that way narrator shows more emotions.
And reading captions is not that hard (do you know that YouTube has a "pause" button? It helps a lot)
SEThatered 5 months ago
@TheRipePunani maybe I am just more sensitive to french ignorance, as it is a tradition there, not to speak any other language then french.
I prefer heavily accented and half broken accents. They show at least, that the talker cares about the audience.
liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds Seems more like the audience cares about the actual story than the medium on which it's presented.
Also, if you haven't noticed, this was recorded at TED Paris so it seems more like she's speaking to a French audience.
Besides, why is this such a huge deal to you? It's an international conference with international guest speakers discussing "ideas worth spreading", not "who speaks the superior language".
TheRipePunani 5 months ago
@TheRipePunani In some case you are correct... Just if the talker speaks in his own language, because his people are known for believing their own country is the best in the world, and everyone has to learn their language, I do have a problem with it.
Considering the ignorance to other countries, the french are the 1800s version of 20th century americans. Just that they seemed to have forgotten that there hasn't been anything good coming out of france for a few 100 years...
liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds Every country has people who still think their country is the best or their language is the best or their government is the best etc. It's a little bit of a broad generalization to just pin on only the French.
TheRipePunani 5 months ago
@TheRipePunani maybe it's just that it's one of the few countries, where I couldn't find a single person thinking differently..
I even know examples, where people asked a question in english, and the french answered in french, showing that even if they could speak english, they just reject doing so.
I know a french guy, who didn't learn the language in 10 years living in another country!!!
both examples, I never heard from any other country in the world!

liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds Amigo!... you are wrong! ... do you speak another language ??? I asume not... this is TED paris, why should it be spoken in english ? I hate you people who think everybody should speak english. I once saw a guy in France (the guy was from USA) asking for a whopper in a Mcdonalds, he was screaming and talking shit to the girl who didnt speak english, he should be the one speaking french since he is not in his country.
TED is international, you should to, learn another language!
edgarinv 5 months ago 38
@edgarinv I do speak 3 languages. My mothertounge isn't english.
As a matter of fact, France is the country in the western world, with the least people speaking foreign languages. The only people, that wouldn't talk another language, even if they could, just out of principle.
and the only ones, who act as if they didn't understand you talking french, just because your ponounciation isn't 100% perfect.
THAT'S why I don't like them!
liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds cool... i speak 3 also, and english isnt my mothertounge... but I could say to you that I've studied in France for a year... and.... you have to take two different language courses, english is forced to be taken, the other one you choose wich.
And YES you need to have a nearly 100% pronounciation when speaking french because the language demands it... for example is not the same "vite" and "bite" if you dont make the V sound you could be saying "Cock" xD
edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv so all you are saying is that french are so troubled with their own language, that they created a paranoid fear of misspronouncing other languages?
well if that isn't healthy....
liquidminds 5 months ago
@liquidminds Yes... but no... french are troubled just for being french thats for shure... but their range of frecuencies within their language gives them difficulties to pronounce several sounds... like the " J " or "R" in spanish, its IMPOSIBLE for them to do it, they need years of practice to do a noise that is near but not the same.
edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv so the french are language-impaired, and that's why it's politicaly incorrect to mock their disability?
Well.. eventhough I don't agree with it, I can live better with "you are right, but you shouldn't say so" than "you are wrong, french are the friendliest, most foreignloving people in the world"....
liquidminds 5 months ago
@edgarinv Please don't use the word impossible so lightly. I've learned lot's of foreign weird sounds without needing that much time. I'm no genius. Other surely can do it too. You can argue that most can't, but don't say it's impossible please.
raydredX 5 months ago
@raydredX You are right... IMPROBABLE then... but hey... i know a lot of french who where trying to learn english for 3 year and the couldnt make the sound "J" in spanish..... wich is this...
watch?v=3VoPgwKEUso
try it :)
edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv Hm? They call it a velar, but then they use the symbol for uvular and pronounce a uvular. O.o
Also I can do that, but I still don't exactly get where you define the line between the Voiceless Uvular Trill and the Voiceless Uvular Fricative.
The only sounds I have trouble with are vowels I think. Also fluent bilabial trills and non-glottalized ejectives are among the most challenging consonants. They're pretty easy compared to a fluent vowel use for me though.
raydredX 5 months ago
@raydredX well.. hmm in Spain the "j" is very strong... here in Mexico, the "j" is soft with no vibration... you can do both, is the same.
Spanish vowels are easy I think... we just have 5 with no changes. French vowels are very hard to do it the right way, specially the nasal ones, that was the most difficult things I deal with in France xD.. and also the difference between V and B... mexican spanish has forgot the difference.
edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv Spanish vowels are easy as hell. I'm Portuguese. We have similar languages but I think Portuguese is harder.
Your [β] is pretty cool though. :D Even though it makes it hard to distinguish [v] and [b].

edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv Remember that you should be the one speaking Hungarian, next time you visit Hungary, or to learn German next time you visit Germany. Ever been to Iceland?
TED is international, you should to (I'll go out on a limb and say with this "to" you meant "too" and NOT call you a fucking ignorant whiny bitch for not being able to learn another language), learn another language!
Zbenesch 5 months ago
@Zbenesch Im sorry for my errors while writing... Im not perfect nor my english... And YES when in Germany I tried to speak german, when in greece, greek, Italian in italy and so on (Ive failed to do that in Prague, Holland, and some parts of spain they have languages that are very hard to understand)... I mean a few words like food, toilets, water, how much it cost, you can easily find this words on google and its pronounciation, people actually like you more for just even trying.
edgarinv 5 months ago
@edgarinv
Although I have no problems reading some subtitles I have to say this is the only TED talk that I've seen so far that is not in English, so it does seem like a novelty to me. Of course some people will take it badly, that is to be expected of those with lesser minds.
TheUnchainedMind 5 months ago
@liquidminds Wow petty little man, while the rest of the world hate on the English and Americans for the atrocious evils they perform against other people.
You simply hate other people merely for speaking differently than you. Very low!
lordmetroid 5 months ago 22
@lordmetroid no I hate people for not speaking the common language which most of us non-french speak. To assume your language must be automaticly accepted is incredibly arrogant and self-centered. The french didn't even promote the study of english or any other foreign language untill recently. So yeah the rest of the world has a right to hate the french for only talking in french when everyone else tries to learn something of each other.
BrutusAlbion 5 months ago
@BrutusAlbion More people speak Chinese than English. Do you?
SpookyFan 5 months ago
@SpookyFan Yes obviously Chinese has been the most used language all over the world for the past 100 years in commerce *rolls eyes* and yes TEDTalks is orientated towards chinese speaking individuals...
Get real dude...
BrutusAlbion 5 months ago
@lordmetroid not for speaking differently. For rejecting any other language than their own.
I speak 3 languages. (french not included) and I am continuing to learn even more.
That's why I hate people that believe their own language is the best in the world, and have the ignorance to demand everyone else to learn that language.
English is international, because it's so damn simple, that everyone can learn it in a very short time.
liquidminds 5 months ago

Problem? Learn another language.
kebakent 5 months ago
@kebakent

TED: English or GTFO
Derfor min kommentar.
