@bob3006 That's all well and good, but the point of this video is the multiple failed starts, or the repeated cranking, hence the word "crank" in the title!?
Thank you for wasting 3 minutes of your life by watching the beginning of my video, and for wasting another 1 minute bitching about it. I really appreciate that, and I will treasure your 4 wasted minutes forever! Or about 7 seconds after I press [Post], whichever comes first.
Nice and neat installation. We used the ladder rack too for organizing the wiring (350 MCM for our gen set) and it really tidys things up. By the way, the guy at the end hovering over the running engine is either deaf, or will be if he doesn't wear some ear protection. These things are LOUD!
@gabigowriel Uhh... do you know how many acres 200MW of solar would require? I do! I'm a founding member of and sit on the board of directors for a solar non-profit 501(c)3, working to become a 501(c)10, with plans to become a 501(c)8. I know for a fact that with today's technology you can effectively cram in about 100KW per acre. So, you're talking about procuring about 2,000 acres for solar -- at a hospital that has 64 separate buildings across roughly 260 acres. How, exactly, would that fit?
@ 3:55 seems like the entire room rattled once it got started. Very impressive machines, almost scary to think of 2MW not to mention there are more powerful generators.
I used to manufacture and Assemble these at Global Manufacturing in Ladson, SC but the ones we worked on were the ones inside of a tractor trailer box I used to get a big ass smile on my face when we would test one and it would run oh so perfect
@dylan8495 That's a smaller version of the compressor engine we use to push natural gas down a pipeline and ours runs on natural gas so ether will not work.
This one sounds like its a diesel so maybe ours sounds like a drill trying to start and the starter also runs on natural gas. Its like a impact ratchet but for starting the engine.
@idontcare80 I think there's something wrong with your calculation. This is a ~2500hp Cat 3516 diesel engine driving an electric generator motor rated at 2000KW at 480VAC 3-phase, 60Hz. Check your numbers again.
This is probably a gs generator and not diesel so if you think starting one is like turning a big key then think again. Thats why LPG cars need to start up on petrol first. A) it's inefficient and B) what you see before you
@W7ENK Fair enough. I used to build generators for a company called Stephill generators in the UK but nothing on the scale of this. It's an awesome engine I am very impressed. Does this have a decompression valve or is it straight combustion???
I have also encountered amazing foul ups straight from the factory. Am also amazed the factory will sign off on what is clearly a poor engineering decision
W7ENK I think it's time to give up your argument and just admit that things could have been done a bit differently to make it start up easier. Come on dude.

@W7ENK Great, I was just about to ask the same question. I love anything diesel like that. It's extremely loud! I must go and google for the type of battery to see what it is.
@W7ENK Damn near flattened them too with all that cranking. Takes about 1300 CCA for these to start. sounds like one cylinder fires way before the other 11. START DAMN YOU!!!
@TheToddy30 the starter moter runs off 24 volts dc coming from the battery. The generator is paralled to the power grid so it is ready to run in case of a blackout.

@W7ENK there is a primer mounted above the five horizontal fuel filters. I test generators for a company that builds generators and I have ran several of these 69 liter 2 MW cats. If you crack the bolt loose on the bottom left of the primer and prime until you get pure fuel coming out of that plug she will fire right up and if it doesn't run out of fuel you will never need to prime it again.
I love your videos! Do you know anyone who needs help with their handwriting? Just google "Chrissy Handwriting" and go to the videos page. Every letter of the alphabet is demonstrated on my channel. Thanks for friending me!
@amit79ful That's why we do annual PMs on these machines, start/run them once a month, and load test them once per year. Apparently, they don't do that at nuke plants? o_O
@W7ENK i was kidding, ur PM proves good preparedness, however CATs are good gensets, back home in my country India, CAT is now emerging as big competition to home grown (read govt. supported) earthmoving and power generation equipment industries.
@yamahonkawazuki From reports initially in MSM shortly after the Fukushima disaster started, I read that their records indicated they hadn't been serviced or even fired up in over a year. Bad maintenance practices, too. All around bad deal!
@W7ENK aye. the gen room was underground. and flooded. the earthquake, the flood from tsunami etc was a recipe for disaster. evrythign together = a mess for the japanese people :"(
@yamahonkawazuki Don't be fooled by rumours of Japanese technological know how. Mostly they are mindless drones. I worked for a big global Japanese company for seven years.
@Nomoreidsleft as have i. in one way shape or form. as far as fukushima goes. im just guessing that it was bad design all around. room being underground PLUS hte tsunami plus the quake etc. = the perfect storm if you will. if it HAD to be underground, should have been somehow waterproofed
@W7ENK Fair enough. Maybe it had an electronic primer, coz the C27 and C32 engines in the F series off highway trucks have them, i do realise this isn't an OHT LOL. That's really weird not having a primer pump, Coz i'm guessing that's a 3516 B series engine. They could always call up CAT and get them to jump on SIS and get a new secondary filter base to accommodate the hand primer. Or they could have cracked off the return line from the block and bled it up that way??
i think that if i was a patient in a hospital, with this generator , i would be dead , before the generator kicked in , adios!!!!!!!! amicos.!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a good thing this engine wasn't needed in any kind of an emergency. Things would have been pretty crazy if that power was needed. Things like this should always be looked over by the hands on maintenance techs , the guys with practical experience in how stuff should work.
W7ENK: Don't Let all the rude comments bother you. I've been in the same boat with one similar to it. Yes it is disgusting when they mount the filters horizontally.(Slap the guy in the mouth that did it) LOL.. Felt like pulling ALL my hair out starting it. but it finally took off. No damage to the starter and absolutley no starting fluid like others said to use that posted on here. They can't figure out that ether can cause SEVERE damage to them eventually.. Great Job!!
diesel standing in the lines, by a backup system? i even drain my bike when i know that i dont drive the next 8 weeks! a Lanz Bulldog will never have problems to start with old diesel, its one zyl with a hell of compression. but standing diesel? for the first or emergency start, it need to come in direct to the cyl. air in the fuel filter! man, dont you fill the filter before you replace it?
I find the comments on this video amazing. It seems to me they had just finished doing maintenance on the engine. You know .... they replaced the fuel filter. This allowed air into the lines. The engine will not run with air in the lines. They said there was no way to bleed the lines. I bet they know what they are talking about. After this start there would be fuel in the lines. On the next and following starts the engine would start normally. Think People!!!
@TeslaMe2 there s a hand operated pump to get the pressure back and the air out after opening an outlet ... if it s covered with oil/fuel (and closed again) you will first try to start ... for a backup system which is normally not running you have to check daily that there´s no air or dust in the systems fuel lines ... I don t think the crew is bad - they re just showing a weak system!
@1974motorhead indeed they should better order two Leopard 2 diesel engines MB 873-Ka 501 or MB 838 CaM500 from Daimler Benz (Leopard 1 bit cheaper) they will always start immediately after the mystic words: "Auspuff - Kette - Frei!!!" are spoken ;)
Man you cant tell me that this engine had no bleed capability. I look after two eight cyl versions of these with Duplex filter systems and have never had a problem with the bleed. Try clamping the return next time and when it fires remove the clamp quickly. Those injectors need fuel for lube also so you need to keep fuel in the heads for start up.
In my former company we used to put a secondary fuel line with a manual pump for priming engines either if not built-in by the manufacturer. Just because if you have a 4-gallons fuel filter complex you seriously risk to blow starting motors and batteries
All the talk about reading the description, but maybe the description is not accurate. Seems illogical that anything would be designed in such a way to be this difficult. I am no expert, but it seems like there must be an easier way.
Clearly it's not too much cranking because the cranking speed is the same at the beginning of the video as it is at the end. Usually when things are over cranked, the batteries tend to go flat
Im just wondering...did you ever think about trying to start the engine with Ether (starting fluid)? I work for a Cat dealer and if we can't get a engine started after a few tries we just shoot some Ether to it. It'll run on the Ether until it sucks the fuel to the cylinders.
I have 3 3516's running on lfg and have 80,000 hr on them and the starters get 10 times the thrashing the ones in this video have and they are the same ones the engines came with.. You have no clue about big bore engines and how it is to start one.. How many times in a week do you start your car? Maybe you should replace your starters once a week ?
@CATlfg1 That seems highly unlikely, that after 80,000 hours your still running the original starter....not saying its impossible but I would be shocked if it were true, if so I need to find out where you get your starters from.
@kenneth0211 Not really, With CAT 3500 and 3600 series engines running on NG or LFG or even Digester gas the "starters" take far more of a beating then what is in this video.. Ask any plant operator that run big bore engines. CAT, Jenbacher,Waukesha.. They will all tell you the same thing. 90% of bigger engines have a "over crank shutdown" and will not let you burn the starters up.. As far as the starters I am running, They are CAT ( built by someone else I'm sure) and crank just fine!!!!
if i was in this hospital undergoing an operation, i would definitly not like to be reliant on this generator to give power to the equipment that would be keeping me alive, this seems like bad bad maintanence to me,
-sigh- I remember a tractor I had that was like this engine.. The engineers must have had a group meeting and plotted how to make my life difficult. In the end they decided "Hay!! Lets put the fuel filter on tip of the engine and face it upside down!" How long did it take you to get it going? everyone else that is crabbing can go pound sand, clearly they never worked on diesels before! Some times you just have to work through it! There are times no amount of priming will help you!
Cat's suck these days...no provision for priming the fuel system after filter change??? WTF???! The old D-349s had a hand pump for doing just that, but I'm sure management at Cat felt that was too expensive. Cat 3500s are junk, anyway.
I found a cat generator at an abandoned hospital. We tried to start it, but couldn't figure it out due to time constraints, and not really knowing what we were doing. I'm in love with this thing and want to give it one last hurrah before it gets sold for scrap or parts. The batteries seem a bit low (30v IIRC), but we couldn't get anything to happen. It is 8 cylinders, has two turbos, and I didn't see a radiator near it. Any advice for starting it?
New Cat 3512s and 3516s suck. They were designed by management, due to Big Strike at Cat. The D-series engines were MUCH better machines than these junkers.
We have 3512 1500KW as prime power for our 200 acre sand/gravel and blacktop yard. Sounds just like home! Ours is the same as to difficult to start with air in the system. Our unit runs 8-12 hours a day during yearly production. This unit run 2 starters, and are very inexpensive compared to what whole does in yearly output.
as far as medical equipment in operating rooms i would think that in a modern hospital that equipment would be powered via ups systems that is uniterruptedpowersupllies that instently swiitch to battery power that is good for 30 minutes or more so there is plenty of time for the emergency generators to come on line and from there to power everything and recharge the ups batteries
@MF11283 Umm, no. It's not the main backup generator. It's a backup to a set of 3 x 1.75MW generators that serve as the backup to the hospital. This was the first start after it's first annual PM on this engine. Did you even bother reading the description?
Isn't it bad for the injector pump to run dry like that ?

@redreaper2020 They lowered in into the tunnel, moved it into place, and built the room around it.

Great Job!!

TeslaMe2 9 months ago

TheBlazen001 10 months ago
In my former company we used to put a secondary fuel line with a manual pump for priming engines either if not built-in by the manufacturer. Just because if you have a 4-gallons fuel filter complex you seriously risk to blow starting motors and batteries

All the talk about reading the description, but maybe the description is not accurate. Seems illogical that anything would be designed in such a way to be this difficult. I am no expert, but it seems like there must be an easier way.
wantapgt 11 months ago
Clearly it's not too much cranking because the cranking speed is the same at the beginning of the video as it is at the end. Usually when things are over cranked, the batteries tend to go flat
wantapgt 11 months ago
Im just wondering...did you ever think about trying to start the engine with Ether (starting fluid)? I work for a Cat dealer and if we can't get a engine started after a few tries we just shoot some Ether to it. It'll run on the Ether until it sucks the fuel to the cylinders.
reece700xx 11 months ago
I have 3 3516's running on lfg and have 80,000 hr on them and the starters get 10 times the thrashing the ones in this video have and they are the same ones the engines came with.. You have no clue about big bore engines and how it is to start one.. How many times in a week do you start your car? Maybe you should replace your starters once a week ?
CATlfg1 11 months ago
@W7ENK my comment is directed at the people who think this is to much on the starters for a industrial engine.. They have no clue...
CATlfg1 11 months ago 2
@CATlfg1 That seems highly unlikely, that after 80,000 hours your still running the original starter....not saying its impossible but I would be shocked if it were true, if so I need to find out where you get your starters from.
kenneth0211 8 months ago
@kenneth0211 Not really, With CAT 3500 and 3600 series engines running on NG or LFG or even Digester gas the "starters" take far more of a beating then what is in this video.. Ask any plant operator that run big bore engines. CAT, Jenbacher,Waukesha.. They will all tell you the same thing. 90% of bigger engines have a "over crank shutdown" and will not let you burn the starters up.. As far as the starters I am running, They are CAT ( built by someone else I'm sure) and crank just fine!!!!
CATlfg1 8 months ago
if i was in this hospital undergoing an operation, i would definitly not like to be reliant on this generator to give power to the equipment that would be keeping me alive, this seems like bad bad maintanence to me,
onekeypianoplayer 11 months ago
People make mistakes and none of us know it all.CAT is one of the finest engines in the world, bar none.
MrJoseph1157 11 months ago
-sigh- I remember a tractor I had that was like this engine.. The engineers must have had a group meeting and plotted how to make my life difficult. In the end they decided "Hay!! Lets put the fuel filter on tip of the engine and face it upside down!" How long did it take you to get it going? everyone else that is crabbing can go pound sand, clearly they never worked on diesels before! Some times you just have to work through it! There are times no amount of priming will help you!
MiscCheetah 11 months ago
Cat's suck these days...no provision for priming the fuel system after filter change??? WTF???! The old D-349s had a hand pump for doing just that, but I'm sure management at Cat felt that was too expensive. Cat 3500s are junk, anyway.
DeserTBoB93535 11 months ago
I found a cat generator at an abandoned hospital. We tried to start it, but couldn't figure it out due to time constraints, and not really knowing what we were doing. I'm in love with this thing and want to give it one last hurrah before it gets sold for scrap or parts. The batteries seem a bit low (30v IIRC), but we couldn't get anything to happen. It is 8 cylinders, has two turbos, and I didn't see a radiator near it. Any advice for starting it?

On each side there is something that looks like it would be a starter motor, they have thick cables running to a battery pack.

joemana121212 1 year ago
New Cat 3512s and 3516s suck. They were designed by management, due to Big Strike at Cat. The D-series engines were MUCH better machines than these junkers.

We have 3512 1500KW as prime power for our 200 acre sand/gravel and blacktop yard. Sounds just like home! Ours is the same as to difficult to start with air in the system. Our unit runs 8-12 hours a day during yearly production. This unit run 2 starters, and are very inexpensive compared to what whole does in yearly output.

shouldn't there be a hand pump and bleed screw on the filter housing to prime the filter? there is on mine.
jerktrucker 1 year ago
as far as medical equipment in operating rooms i would think that in a modern hospital that equipment would be powered via ups systems that is uniterruptedpowersupllies that instently swiitch to battery power that is good for 30 minutes or more so there is plenty of time for the emergency generators to come on line and from there to power everything and recharge the ups batteries
bernard240vdc 1 year ago
kinda scary when you think this is a hospitals main backup generator
MF11283 1 year ago
@MF11283 Umm, no. It's not the main backup generator. It's a backup to a set of 3 x 1.75MW generators that serve as the backup to the hospital. This was the first start after it's first annual PM on this engine. Did you even bother reading the description?
