I am not sure why, but I hate being near one of those things. Even if im just swimming in a lake and im next to a docked boat I still freak out of im near one of those...
Remember the Indiana Jones movie Was it #3 ?)where Indy is fighting that guy, they are on the boats and getting closer to the prop that's out in the water, and it's chopping up the boat. I'm sure a few of us were moving back away from the screen during that part!
Shooting that scene they actually had to push the boat into the propeller. You see, normally the flow of water from the propeller pushed things behind it back, and this is how a ship gets its propulsion.
Hollywood teaches people a lot of faulty things, such as cars blowing up every single time somebody shoots at one.
The worst place to be is in the water at the side of the ship as it passes. The currents will force a person under and if unlucky straight through the propeller.
the really fucking scary part about this is sometimes they dont kill you instantly sometimes when you get sucked in you will just get thrown around in the water leaving you with just cuts and bruises and having that horrifying memory of that instance stuck in your head for the rest of your life. So if I were to get sucked into one I hope I go head first or atleast get chopped instantly
That looks fucking scary. Imagine, you're a scubadiver and just before you hit the surface, this fucking huge propeller sucks you into it and cut and slash you into pieces..very scary.
This gives me chills. Just imagine falling overboard on a huge ship and knowing that thing is coming towards you under your feet and you can't really see it.
Agreed, watching this gives me some serious heebeejebees. Never knew how common the fear of propellers is.
This was filmed at a propeller repair / test facility, right? It'd be tearing up sea walls and getting fouled with debris in the water all the time if this is how it were mounted to the Cuyahoga.
maaaaan!! being sucked towards that thing would just be HORRIBLE. i don't even want to swim under 50 meters near that thing, even when it's turned off!!! 0_0
@SkeetInTheHeat years ago...a friend of my parent was water skiing. agroup in another boat came along side of him to try to hand him a beer while he was up on waterskis. he wiped out and the boat ran over him. prop messed him up pretty bad....
@SkeetInTheHeat i totally agree!!! god, imagine just having to be in the water and looking at that thing as the ship is passing you!!! that is some scary stuff right there!
@SkeetInTheHeat The sound of large ship propellers while being underwater is the scariest sound in the world; you can even hear them from miles away... "whop whop whop whop" *shudders*
I remember when she layed up in Port Stanley for the winter a few years back. What a great ship and a great video Which lake were you guys on when you you took the vid? I fish on Lake Erie commercially.
The Bond movie A View to a Kill-Bond nearly gets sucked into the prop of a huge pump, but later someone else gets chopped up by it.

can you tell me in which perspective of a ship was it filmed?
How can you see a propeller, which is normally under the boat, because the shaft is not longer that the hull?
Why stands the propeller beside the hull?

I am surprised there wasn't any cavitation. Must be because it was close to the surface or is wasn't as fast as it appeared, not sure
