I like this waltz. It has a bittersweet flavor. I imagine a decrepit ballroom with very old people dancing, reminiscing the good times of their youth. Why is that.? I must find out the background on how Shostakovich came to compose this waltz. I wonder if he had the same feeling?
I just watched Rieu version which was lovely and thought I would check out other versions. This one is so lifeless its putting me to sleep. It DOES matter how you do render it.

I got interested in this piece after hearing it done by - oh my god! - Andre Rieu. Just another case of the good ambassador work he does for music that doesn't exactly get a lot of airplay these days most places. And you can't expose literally millions of people to good music if there aren't millions of people eager to LISTEN to you, and to get THAT, yes, you have to be a little marketing savvy. The common alternative is "welfare classics" played by subsidized musicians to damn near nobody.
@BedBugAcres Exactly right, my friend. If Rieu is what it takes to introduce people to great music, then he is doing great work. I won't dismiss him as a musician until I hear him give a serious performance with a world class orchestra. He is fine at what he does, no denying.
people always complain that this kind of music is superior to sth that others think. I believe that they totally ignore this kind of music. Share this video with them with just a smile and you'll find out!!
Above all only smile with tears can this kind of music bring.
Please dont compare.--- Eagles doesnt have a point with this pieces of music. Eagles is rock and pop ..this is pure and wonderful instrumental music. I love this music, but I also like Eagles very much, but both have different, I dont think that someone had the crazy idea choosing between them. However, if someone ask me what type of music would you prefer between this opera instrumental music or rock I would sure choose this one.
@JOZEPAL I sort of agree. As a classical musician who loves Shostakovitch+Rachmaninov etc,I do think that comparing rock/pop to classical works is just pointless. They are like oil and water. It is like comparing a Rembrandt to a cartoon comic. Both are very skilled but neither is comparable. I often listen to Beethoven+Debussy in the car-but then sometimes feel a bit of Elton John! Elton+ the Eagles- don't pretend to be 'great art' like Beeethoven. But they still have artistic credibility.
You know, I know some old folks who like Rieu because he is the opposite extreme of classical music's unwritten rules and snobbery, not to mention delusions of grandeur. They're just farmers and hoi polloi who cherrish him. If it makes them happy, I am happy for them. Personally, I don't favour either extreme.
And if I may quote from another side of "the classics"...
'Clowns to the left of me... jokers to the right...
If it wasn't for Andre, I would have never found this gem of a melody....Thank you, Andre, you led me to love and discover classical treasures! He is not the stuffy musician I sometimes avoid....
@AnautumnsDay-I disagree.Actually he does it in a way that's a bad advert for Classical! He makes it into a cheap clappalong Walmart muzak product. If anyone who does'nt know any Classical thinks Rieu represents real Classical than that is bad news! Note Rieu himself in interviews is mocking of 'pure' Classical concerts as 'dreary' etc and fans are encouraged to avoid these! Even pop classics like Hebrides Overture,Holst Planets are ignored so his fans never hear the real depth music can bring.
@blueyedboy84 First of all, this is not classical music, It is instrumental but is not considered classical. If he makes people enjoy this music, isn't that a good thing? Or are people just supposed to sit and be bored to death hearing music. This song is a WALTZ, Thus is meant for people to WALTZ to!
That is an extremely cruel and harsh thing to say about Andre Rieu and his music. The man brings some of the most beautiful tunes ever written, into the public domain for all to hear. He also does it in such a fashion as to break down the barriers of elitism and snobbery that wrongly or rightly is associated with classical music . Surely, this can only be of benefit to all who play and listen to classical music ?
Why are we discussing Rieu? NO pro musicians take him seriously-as you said he's businessman of the year.Certainly not musician of the year!
Why do you say everyone loves him?? He is not respected at all by Classical players as he turns Art into commercial pap.
If u really want to hear Shostakovitch hear a real orchestra do symphony 5 or 8 (you will NEVER hear Rieu play any of his symphonies as they can't be reduced to clappalong pulp).
Dont you think there is so much sadness in the world today with war, starvation, recession it is a relief to see people from all walks of life joining together with Andre to sing and dance and be happy for a couple of hoursx
@cheamverdi sorry but andre rieu made a lot of people listen to shostakovich, strauss, etc. ok is a businessman, but i'm glad that many people will listen to classic music ( sorry for my english )
@cheamverdi You are accusing Rieu of not doing what he is not trying to do. Johann Strauss II never programmed a Brahms symphony (although both men admired each other greatly).
@cheamverdi The thing about Rieu is that he dropps everything you just said about true art and stuff to the level of "commoners". Art is for everybody, not just "Classical players" and "pro musicians". Music isn't for them it's for the people who listen to them. I wish things were like old times, when professional musicians had to scrape a living... they were humble, if not modest, they were at the "commoner's" level, they knew what they felt, and hence wrote music accordingly.
Well, he has set this all up on his own. In the beginning, everyone was laughing at him, and now everyone loves him and he is not for nothing the bussisnisman of the year! His orchestra is also very good! But he started everything! André, you have done it great and you have chosen your orchestra well!

I can't even begin to explain how beautiful it sounds. I can see a huge ballroom or a masquerade and everyone dancing in concert with one another! =)
