To break resistance of Nato forces they made a desant from sea on Marseille and started new front line on South. But after US reinforcements arrived to Europe they failed and second front line in France collapsed. In revenge red army started effective invasion on USA but was stopped by nuclear strike. In middle time China joined war as soviet ally.

Also, i'm pretty sure there were only a relative few soldiers that assaulted the school (though that still doesn't make sense realistically, i'm pretty sure it was just done to demonise the Soviets from the outset).
