The Ulster Scots are historically connected by ancestory to Ulster - in fact it was Ulster people who settled the lowlands of Scotland thousands of years ago. @ulsterconfederate,Ulster is on the isle of Ireland, it’s the home of the (Irish natives) that have lived on the island of Ireland for 1000s of years, no flags government or religion will ever change that fact. Ulster Scots on the other hand are blowins starting from the 16th century, by your logic that Scottish settlers in Ulster are originally from Ulster that would make them of Irish stock not Scottish stock as Ulster is on the island of Ireland in the first place.

But the fact remains that protestant plantations by the British Crown (James et al) displaced the Catholic population that was living on the land when the ancestors of present occupants were sent there. The land was stolen from the O'Neill.

Having just recently gotten back from Belfast I have a different perspective. The Ulster people feel beseiged by the Republic to the south and in general receive little if any support from London. They are like us in many respects - a unique culture and people who aren't independent and have been historically pushed around by far off central governments. Most Southrons are at least part Ulster-Scots. Culturally we are very similar. There's a very strong connection between our two lands.

Scotland and Ireland will and always be linked culturally and geographically but not just Ulster/scots who seemed to be defined solely by religion. Living in Scotland I sensed a growing separation from "London politics." Southern England solutions have little to offer Ulster/Ireland or Scotland.

Ulster is historically governed by the O'Neill clan. All northern Irish protestants were exported by the British monarchs as part of a land settlement policy to extend British control. I'm afraid you're wrong. Ireland is already free of Britain. But Ulster is culturally and historically different from Eire. The IRA are Marxists. And they are terrorists.
