Vinyl is analog. The music is recorded as discontinuities of grooves.Everything about the sound waves is retained, at least approximately. In digital recording the sound waves are received by an electronic system which quickly turns the amplitude of the sound wave at any given moment into numeric values, at many cycles per second. I doubt that human ears are sensitive enough to tell the difference there. Possibly old transistor amplifiers were not satisfactory, while vacuum tubes were.

@MicroFarad2 The theory of psycho acoustics purports to tell us what the ears can hear whichbrought us the sound of mp3 players which most feel is not as good as vinyl. No one knows exactly what the ear/brain system can pick up. Vinyl is recorded in one continuous groove from the outside of the record right to the end - there are no discontinuities. Digital is actually discontinuouse - it samples the sound at any given moment and turns it into a number - it jumps from one sample to the next.

@thegasworks By discontinuities I meant that the groove is not smooth, it has the sound recorded in the modulations of the groove. You are essentially correct. However, my contention is that it may be the amplifiers, not the recording medium which makes the difference. Old transistor amplifiers were certainly crap, and some people prefer the sound of vacuum tube amps even today. They sounds from a tube amp certainly have a certain feel to them.

a way, way underknown record....really a mind-boggler. I'm kind of amazed that he did this record as early as he did - it was really a template of what was to come. Listen to that FUZZ bass - cool. A hint of the anthemic Bowie that was to come. THe lyrics are incredible, too. This dude is way too talented to be human. Thanks for a good video for the song. love that ANALOG VINTAGE SYNTH!!! Love the late 60s acid tripout jam and guitar. That shit needs to come back, too, at least in short bursts.

it's actually easy, and fun to play,what's hard is singing secret dimensions while playing!!! :) i have the original Mercury records album sleeve on vinyl record of course, the one with the sanitarium in the background with the man who sold the world!

I bought my album second hand in a Notting Hill record and tape exchange. The album is perfect (still have the vinyl) but the cover was missing. Didn't seem important at the time. : (..
