  • Christopher Hitchens, whatever his religious views, was an idealist who, like the author Kurt Vonnegut, wanted to see a better world with more civility/decency exhibited. Rest in peace, Christopher. You fought the good fight.

  • @boxinghris You give me hope that religion and secular culture can one day find peace. I'm a American who was raised in the Catholic church and Catholic perochial school and I could never accept the dogma of the church. But at the same time I couldn't ignore the good acts and kind actions toward others that I saw from some priests, nuns and lay people.

  • My words currently fail to adequately convey my respect for Hitchens. Not just for his brilliant debating and writing... but because he had the integrity to defend the free speech of those he fervently disagreed with... and didn't bitch about it. And even more so that he used the very last days of his life to further our understanding of cancer and helped find a cure. For that, I feel that Hitchens deserves everyone's respect regardless of whether or not they agree with anything he had to say.

  • absolutely amazing

  • for the 19 who dislike this video, at least the atheists dont stop the ratings and censor comments like the cowardly religious you tube clips on here... the very fact you came on here to dislike the clip or post a negative comment just proves that your right to free speech is being upheld...

  • Loving his essays and debates made me adore him as a being; what a wonderful, clear, brave mind.

I hope his work will be as much of an inspiration to you, as it is to me...

Do not take anything on faith, question everything, and maybe one day you'll make sence of it all...

  • Only Hitchens would apologize for his voice when he has cancer, nothing but class

  • Hitch, you've done more for humanity then you think!

  • Hitch was a great man, he will live on through his works. He has inspired many people to take responsibility for their own minds. I try to watch and learn how to debate and answer the questions of theism.

  • @78alissa Where was his hand when children are raped or when an innocent person is tortured and murdered in cold blood or when an worm paracite burrows into a African child's eye ball making them blind??? Some God he/she is!!! IF YOU DON'T BOW TO ME YOU CAN BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY! But the good news is , he is not real so don't worry and enjoy your life cause it's the only one you get! PEACE!!!

  • @boxinghris I'm a atheist but I must say 'well said' your bang on!

  • Thank you God for you'r hand during life and death. I feel sad for those who do not realise they do not have to carry so much alone. Forgive them Father, For they know not what they do.

  • RIP, Christopher. You've led a wonderful, inspiring life.

  • this video makes me want to cry. im so sad people like this have to go. i get more desperate and desperate as our society gets taken into the manipulative future. But watching this video also gives me hope for myself and helps me stay focused on my goals. although i dont think society will change for the better, i believe the few freethinkers out there will all unite, help each other out, enrich each other's mind and listen to each other. i think it is already happening. i will miss Hitchens

  • All of life is a wager? Hardly. Really just the things that are beyond your control.

  • @vidfreak56 "All of life is a wager? Hardly." - Of course it is. There is no action that you will ever make that doesn't depend on events before, during and after it. Whether they are under your control or not means nothing.

  • @iLIKEtotallyL0VEit But a wager is dependent on whether or not you can perceive the outcome. It has nothing to do with past, present, or future. If in the present you can perceive what the future will be then the decisions you make will not be a wager (or at least so low of a wager that it doesnt matter). If I mitigate the risks to myself (all risks to future events) then what wager am I really taking?

  • @vidfreak56 "(or at least so low of a wager that it doesnt matter). If I mitigate the risks to myself (all risks to future events) then what wager am I really taking?" - The amount of risk is irrelevant, if there is any degree of risk. Also in the cosmic scale of things, the reward you are getting for those risk is also very small, the risks vs reward remain pretty equal. I think you are looking at the word "wager" in a cultural setting more than a strict definition of the word.

  • What is a "troll"?

  • Great Man... will be missed.

  • In terms of the whole religion v atheism debate in which Mr Hitchens is embroiled in, the main tenet of the whole argument which concerns me is that undeniable truth that theists and bigots who seem much more concerned and sometimes irritated by the notion that some people simply do not believe and seem to believe it is their divine right to impose their beliefs on other. Whereas athiests seem quite content with both aspects as long as they can live they life without outside religious influence

  • Bravo old chap, bravo.

  • I only just discovered you, and now you're gone :(

  • It seems the interviewer has no concern in life but his tie arrangement; It was very kind if Hitchens not to kick him out.

  • @avvvora they have done quite a few interviews together i think it was his way of not showing how it hurt him to see the hitch like that

  • Hitchens is a national treasure. Every book of his that I have read, and every interview and speech of his which I have heard, have been intellectually stimulating.

  • lotta view nice

  • Speaking as a christian, I always had the utmost respect and admiration for Hitchens, and his criticism of religious fundamentalism is entirely justified.

Athiests are welcome to their beliefs, and Hitchens never had any quarrel with those religious individuals who didn't feel they had to preach to others or try to 'save' them.

An outstanding writer and social commentator, Hitchens will be missed and shame on any zealot who feels compelled to take shots at him now he is unable to defend himself

  • Come on people. This kid's name is atheistspanker. He is so obviously a troll. Please stop feeding him the attention he so desperately lacks in "real" life.

  • Christopher Hitchens is no longer an atheist. There isn't a single atheist in hell. They are all now quite sure God exists.

  • @AtheistSpanker you're a pathetic person

  • @AtheistSpanker That's just about the dumbest thing I've read all day. Were you trying to be serious?

  • @CognitiveApprentice 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Hitchens used to think it was dumb too.

Another rich fellow died and Christ said in Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments...

There are no atheists in hell. They're all believers now.

  • @AtheistSpanker Got it. I understand completely now... that you haven't the slightest concept of reason or logic... and perhaps a bit of a sadist fetish as well.

There are no Christians in heaven. They're all atheists now. See, I can use bullshit logic to pretend like I know how to argue too!!

  • @AtheistSpanker ooooh atheistspanker! sounds sexy! will u pull me over ur lap and spank my bottom red?! ooooh, i'm wet baby! will u shout that bible shit at me whilst u discipline me?

  • @moria06 Matthew 15:18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean.

  • @AtheistSpanker it sounds like you're turned on....me too. ur place or mine baby?!!!

    :--)

  • @AtheistSpanker Shut the fuck up with your stupid fucking dumbass quotations from some stupid fucking book that nobody with half a brain takes seriously, you fucking useless servile piece of shit. Nobody gives a SHIT about your bullshit, stop wasting this YouTube space for your bullshit!

  • @martinbuzora Proverbs 12:16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

  • @AtheistSpanker does that mean you do or don't want to spank Moria06's sweet ass?

  • @killwill83 I don't visit the gay channels save by accident to see who's leaving me love notes like yourself. :D

  • @AtheistSpanker Oh really? I myself don't visit the gay channels at all. PERIOD. Because I'm not homosexual. I don't know why you even brought it up. Hmmm says quite a lot about your mental state.

  • @AtheistSpanker Thank you for taking the time to reply to my original overzealous comment though.

  • @killwill83 Ok Sir. Have a Happy New Year and may you and yours stay safe.

  • @AtheistSpanker You're probably a troll, but I'd remind you that Qu'ran 3:85 says that "If anyone seeks a religion other than submission to Allah (Islam), never will it be forgiven him, and in the Hereafter, he will be among those who have lost."

^^ This doesn't scare you, though, does it? You have reasons for not granting any credulity to the book it's sourced from. Likewise, it has been said that threatening non-believers with Hell is like a hippy threatening to "punch you in the aura."

  • @themediocrenontheist Save your nonsense for your boyfriend tinkerbell or whoever may be your designated significant other. G'day

  • @AtheistSpanker I'm not gay. If I were, it wouldn't be an insult. I debate in many forums online, but in public, I set up a whiteboard demonstration with verses, theological or philosophical questions, and I sit by it and read until people come up to converse, discuss, debate, et cetera. Your name-calling wouldn't get very far with me, or anyone in a professional venue. I also doubt you would be doing any 'atheist spanking' in person, I must say.

  • @themediocrenontheist Get lost.

  • @AtheistSpanker Does it hurt, seeing the world around you shrink away from the values you hold so dearly? Does it scare you, being so alone in a world that has thrown off your savior as just another silly belief from a time long-since-gone? Does it offend you, being ignored when you quote verses from a book you hold more dearly than life, when others recognize it as the fire-starting material that it is? Go kill yourself, fool. We're smarter in 2012, and we don't need your kind.

  • @beatonm198 So far no ignorant fool has been able to ignore me, including you.

  • @AtheistSpanker I didn't ask you that. You must be religious, with your ability to ignore what is asked, and tirade on about jack and shit.!

  • @beatonm198 You broke down, got angry and lost your cool. Don't look now but you've been spanked. It was for your own good to show you the error of your ways. Stop being foolish. ;)

    Your Teacher,

    Atheist Spanker

  • @AtheistSpanker Oh cute, just like religion, yet again. Asserting victory, rather than actually achieving it. So cute :-) Too bad you're just a troll with stupid beliefs.

  • @beatonm198 Aww, you poor little poopsie.

  • Stop making the wager and none of this will ever have to happen again.

  • Bunch of whiny little girls.

You're all queer for a corpse.

  • @1GodOnlyOne 0GodOnlyNone.

  • Comment removed

  • @EmeraldIsleStar I have no beliefs.

Hitchens is dead, and the world is a much, MUCH better place now.

  • Three words: atheist worm chow

  • @1GodOnlyOne that wasn't very Christ-like of you to say. R.I.P.

  • @clayfootz I'm not Christ, jackass.

The world is a much, MUCH better place now that this extremely ignorant buffoon is now worm chow.

You should prepare for a similar end.

  • @1GodOnlyOne Obvious troll is obvious.

  • @1GodOnlyOne There's a favor I'd offer you, though you won't see it this way. Google search "hierarchy of argument," and look for the image that looks like a Maslovian pyramid with colored tiers. You will notice that name-calling and argumentum ad hominem attacks inhabit the bottom tiers, whereas "refuting the central point" of one's opponent is at the peak of efficiency. If you ever wish to be taken seriously, this must be the map for any further discourse.

Go now, and sin no more.

  • What a true loss...The loss of this great man saddens me! RIP Hitch!! You were brilliant..

  • RIP Hitch. This is a truly sad day.

  • I hope one of these experimental treatments is successful. I'm sure Hitch will be happy to say that science saved his life, where "God" has saved none.

  • @wyndam71 LOLZ

Your hope has failed -- your atheist wet-dream is now worm chow.

    God: 1

    "science:" 0

    LOLOLOL!

  • @1GodOnlyOne Hitchens' fate is no different then yours will eventually be. The difference is he's left behind far more who respect him than you ever will.

    Reason: 1

    You: 0

  • @1GodOnlyOne What's up, are you jerking off at the thought of Hitchens death? Sure appears that way.

  • @1GodOnlyOne

    how very 'christian' of you.

  • i seem to detect a sincere respect and affection between hitchens and brian. especially coming from brian. i like it.

  • @lafontaine13 They were queer for each other. Now brian's queer for a corpse.

  • @JesusChristisMuslim Hahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahhahaa

  • @JesusChristisMuslim Keep your niqabs and corrupt politicians, and clitoris-mutilating populace.

  • Thinking of you Mr Hitchens. It breaks my heart to know you are suffering.

  • His last speech he made he could barely stand or speak and looked like he was 90 pounds. He is one of the greater humans around, that is for sure. I wan't him to recover so badly but I have never known a person who has cancer to bounce back from that state.

  • I cannot help but pray for christopher hitchens. God bless him. Cancer suckes.

i just buried my husband. I am so sorry and my heart is breaking for him. I am a Christian.

  • wow...

I hope Hitchens lives and all the people posting here (excluding me of course ;) ) get cancer and die to rid the world of all your stupidity (atheist and theist alike).

  • Christopher-there are doctors in USA curing ca. Chemo is a toxic waste of time except for certain lymphomas, leukaemias. Chemo is a big money spinner .

Get hold of Suzanne Somers-she will set you on the right course.

  • Christopher-there are doctors in USA curing ca. Chemo is a toxic waste of time except for certain lymphomas, leukaemias.

  • The beginning is so sad... How sad it is to be struck by a disease like this... may all of you have a great and healthy life :)

  • I really really really hope mr. Hitchens will recover. The world needs him badly.

  • @Gubbevares Unfortunately, he will not recover. At his stage of cancer, the best that can be hoped for is that he lives for as many more years as possible.

  • @ianman6 I dislike your post :( But I know it is true...aw... so sad...:(

  • "it is brian isn't it?"

  • @JesusChristisMuslim If you believe in God your an uneducated, self deluding moron.

  • @JesusChristisMuslim continue covering your women in ninja costumes haha the world mocks you

  • @JesusChristisMuslim lol muslims. The fact you consider naked women or naked any person as a negative goes to prove how backwards you are.

  • @Dionysus187 yeah off course naked is forward. Fuck off logic isn't it.

  • @JesusChristisMuslim Only people living in the real world, who are enlightened, are allowed an opinion. Keep your bronze age crap to yourself. Thanks.

  • Fantastic interview. On many issues, I don't know whether to agree with him or not... but he's clearly a great, great man. What a mind.

  • I watch Hitchens today, as an atheist, and still find he challenges my beliefs. We are better off as a people because such a brilliant writer and thinker existed, and I am better off as a person because I was fortunate enough as a person to be born in an age inhabited by such intellectual giants. Your philosophy has changed me, Hitchens - along with hundreds other men and women. The imprint you've left on us will make sure you'll live on far beyond your personal end.

  • WIFE AND I LOVE CHRISTOPHER! A FEW YEARS AGO CHRISTOPHER ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE WATER BOARDED TO PROVE IT WAS AND IS TORTURE: THE THROAT & BRAIN GOES INTO HIGH STRESS AND COLLAPSES DURING WATER BOARDING. DID THIS EXPERIENCE INFLUENCE THIS OR EXCITE AN EXISTING BURIED CONDITION:

  • Why put a video of a dead guy on your channel?

  • @1GodOnlyOne You're a moron, be quiet.

  • @1GodOnlyOne Everyone is dying, so by your logic, everyone is dead.

  • God bless him he has oesophageal cancer. No matter how much he hates my God I will pray for healing. He really needs to get it together real quick.

  • @onebadgs400 This is one of the things that disgusts me about religion. "Oh, I'll pray for you" That's just like saying, "Let me just sit back and do absolutely nothing helpful." Why not try donating to a cancer foundation instead of throwing money into the collection plates at church to line the ministers' pockets? Why not learn more about cancer so you can educate yourself and others about it? Two hands working accomplish more than a thousand clasped in prayer.

  • @plilgeberg Yep my ministry offers a free medical clinic every month for the needy in our community. We inform people about cancer and many other health issues. My money is going to good use. I even did the website to get the word out. Most mega churches have 24/7 free medical clinics. I will continue to clasp my hands as you say. Stop hating on Christians.

  • @onebadgs400 Yeah, there are tons of Christian charities, but what makes them any better than the Jewish charities, or the Islamic ones? You can have charities without having to lie to people about the man in the sky. Look at the Salvation Army for example, that denies help for homosexuals. Denying help to those in need because they don't share your beliefs or lifestyle doesn't sound very christian to me. Show me factual and scientific evidence supporting the idea that prayers get answered.

  • @plilgeberg nah I don't feel like scientifically proving something I can't. The salvation army may turn around gays but we don't care. They need help to. I show them love and they will change and hang out in heaven with me when we die. ;3

  • @plilgeberg

I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. I adore Christopher Hitchens, and I consider myself Christian. I think where many people go wrong is when they A. expect Christians -or any other people of faith- to be perfect. We're not, no one is and B. expect empirical data; neither side has empirical data. I can't prove that there is a God. No person knows that. If we 'knew' then faith wouldn't be necessary. A belief, a hope, in things not seen is essential to believing in God.

  • @plilgeberg

Also, far too many Christians love telling others what God likes, who He hates, and what He is or is not. This is arrogance. I try to live life based on the principles of the 4 main gospels. I go on what Christ said about Himself. I believe Soren Kierkegaard when he says that we will all stand to give an account of our own lives before God as INDIVIDUALS. I do not claim to know how or what God thinks about homosexuals, and I believe that that's because I personally do not NEED

  • @plilgeberg

to know the specifics. It's not my concern. As a Christian, I am commanded to treat others how I'd like -or expect- to be treated and to love others; others are just as imperfect as I am, whether they're gay, straight, asexual, or anything else. What matters to me, and what I believe matters to God, is where my heart is. I think it's important to try to look at others through the eyes of Jesus, without trying to make myself out to be Him. I believe we will be judged the way we

  • judge others, because God is just. I believe we can be forgiven for having passed harsh judgments, because God is merciful. More to the point of your comments, I believe many atheists, secular humanists, agnostics, and those whom are flatly indifferent to the existence of God are MUCH closer to actually treating others the way Christ wants people to treat one another than many, many Christians are. Christians are commanded to love their neighbors as they love themselves, and this is a major

  • problem because many, many Christians aren't willing to love themselves. Many Christians subscribe to living life with a guilty, self-loathing conscience. They choose to ignore Christ's offer of freedom, and they are hard on themselves for their own imperfections and this, sadly, translates into treating others as poorly as they treat themselves. Good thoughts, Plilgeberg. You make really good points; if I believed what Christians today told me to believe about God, I'd probably be atheist. too.

  • @plilgeberg

problem. Too many Christians basically hate themselves for not being perfect. They are some of the most unwilling to forgive themselves and often walk around doing nothing but berating themselves for not being perfect or for not being what they think God wants them to be. It's no wonder they treat others so poorly. They've missed the point. To be honest, if I believed about God what most Christians today ask people to believe, I'd probably be atheist, too.

  • I consider myself Christian, but I've also found that most of my atheist friends understand the heart of God better than most believers. Be good to others. Treat others with respect, how you'd like to be treated. Serve them, love them regardless of their 'sins', shortcomings. People matter. It's altogether inspiring and frustrating to see the most Christ-like behavior coming from atheist friends than I what see coming from those friends of mine who believe Christ to be their Savior.

  • @laffin2much Thank you so much for presenting a level-headed stance on this. I do not have any contempt for religious people who are open to the beliefs of others. I just think it's crazy that when it comes to being open about your beliefs it's pretty much a one way road with Christians. Christopher was once talking about how now that he's dying people try to 'save' him even more. He pointed out how disgustingly rude it would be if he were to go down to the Christian hospital and say

  • @laffin2much "Hey. you've led a religious life, but now that you're dying I feel obligated to tell you that your whole life has been a lie and there is no god. You don't have to worry about heaven or hell anymore." I have a lot of respect for people like you. Ghandi once said "I do not like your Christians, they are so unlike your Christ." Thank you for being so like your Christ, whom we can all learn a lot from regardless of whether or not we believe he was the son of God.

  • @plilgeberg Haahaa and Ghandi was a saint. Tell that to the young girls he molested.

  • @onebadgs400 Just a word of advice: ad hominem is a very poor and ineffective method of argument.

  • @plilgeberg

Ghandi had a love affair with a german bodybuilder

Look it up if you don't believe me

  • @sonykroket I just did look into it. There isn't any definitive evidence, only some speculation about his relationship with Hermann Kallenbach. Even if this relationship was sexual, I don't see why it matters either way. Sometimes men like to have sex with other men. It's a fact of life. Get over it.

  • @plilgeberg

I dont care about what ghandi did, its just i think he's pussy and his peaceful protest is a crock of shit

People idolize this man and i never figured out why. Besides, his name is abused and for the wrong reasons

  • @sonykroket I never said I agreed with the man's politics. There's nothing wrong with quoting people when it is useful to your argument. I could use this quote, also relevant to my point about Christianity: “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.” It doesn't really matter who said it. It just helps me get the point across.

  • Comment removed

  • No, it doesn't.

You have made zero points so far. All you came up with is anecdotal bullshit

  • After seeing the thumbnail i didnt want to see it because it would make me sad to see Chris in this state. But he deserves to still be heard especially now.

  • As naturally as two follows one & three precedes four, “atheism” accompanies an intellectual declivity in the populace-at-large.

  • Christopher, you have enspired me many times. get well.

  • The Hitch may die, but what het stands for will live on!

  • I can relate to the Chemo brain....Thanks for sharing this.

  • He is a hero. Great person. Never to be repeated again. Love you Hitchens.

  • Hitchens is the greatest!! We will be poorer when he is not around. He is a living Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain wrapped in one. Damn cancer!!

  • Jesus was nailed to a cross, Thor was carrying around a huge bloody hammer. You do the math.

  • have you tried canibus for the cancer yet? plz do

  • Heaven and hell are right here on earth. I don't want to talk right now of the hell, but I am happy to talk of the heaven. Heaven is a mind as brilliant and witty as Christopher Hitchens, whether the words he has written or the words he has spoken. Heaven is an orator as great as Hitchens to listen to on audio. The cancer may affect his voicebox - that is a CRIME - but it cannot take away his VOICE. I am of only average IQ, but I grow when I listen/read/hear/know of Mr. Hitchens. Peace.

  • @SimoneDeEngles You sound intelligent to me. This may be tired old ground to tread, but I don't think a Mensa test or what education you could afford is the be all and end all. I consider intelligence to be the ability of the mind to comprehend abstract data, be it along the lines of logic and reason, or this newfangled EQ that seems to put a name to something we have known all along. Don't sell yourself, down - you have the tools, to expand your minds horizons.

  • @difficultbastard ......thank you very much for your thoughtful words. I will look into this "EQ," as I like when things we have known all along finally have a name. Logic and reason keep hunting me down, no matter how in the past I have tried to escape them. I have given in. Thank you again. Peace to Mr. Hitchens and peace to all who are grateful to him as I am.

  • Anal goody goodies talk shit about drinking and smoking but they're going to die and rot too and most of them suck.

  • Your audience needs you Mr Hitchens.

As a fellow logical, free thinker i wish you with all sincerity a speedy recovery.

  • @jjoneil73 I nearly cried watching this, this man is a legend and no other can take his place.

  • Horace, an Egyptian mythical deity was: Born on December 25, Was born to a Virgin Mother, Healed the sick. I'm not trying to crap on anyone's ideas or anything, but really are they even their ideas? Or are they one of the billions of people who was subjected to one of the most popular takes on religion, told that it was fact, and made to believe that faith (which is the only way to make blind acceptance sound virtuous) is the only way to make their life worth anything? I think that's nonsense.

  • [Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"; Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it." — "60 Minutes" (5/12/96)]

  • He's going to crap out before Christmas 2011.

  • C'mon Hitch hang in there man... =S

  • if i were him, i'd be damn proud of all the enlightenment i'd spread

  • w/ regard to the Horace Mann quote "until you've done something for humanity...", Christopher Hitchens has ALREADY done so much for humanity that he need not concern himself w/ worry that he has not done enough.

He has taught me so much and I don't even care to think about this world w/o him.

  • @moria06 i'm with you. I give full credit for my world view to 4 people, Hitch is one of them.

  • I hate hearing him and seeing him like this.. :(

  • He was quite goodlooking in the 80s. Love yah Hitch.

  • @FearedAngel Hitchens was a total fox when he was younger and still quite good looking in the '80s and as he got older.

  • David Rockefeller's lickspittle Christ' Hitchens supports the Wilsonian model of "diplomacy" which includes, but is not limited to, expeditionary forces, permanent outposts (bases) and exporting/fomenting revolution by sabotaging local elections to depose popularly-elected leaders.

  • @YourUTubeMonitor well quoted douche-bag! drop your cut and paste elsewhere

  • @richardellipsis : Discover your inner-woman.

  • @YourUTubeMonitor I suppose you prefer pacification of murderous monsters. sell it somewhere else, Chamberlain

  • this is sad
