I'm a American who was raised in the Catholic church and Catholic perochial school and I could never accept the dogma of the church. But at the same time I couldn't ignore the good acts and kind actions toward others that I saw from some priests, nuns and lay people.
My words currently fail to adequately convey my respect for Hitchens. Not just for his brilliant debating and writing... but because he had the integrity to defend the free speech of those he fervently disagreed with... and didn't bitch about it. And even more so that he used the very last days of his life to further our understanding of cancer and helped find a cure. For that, I feel that Hitchens deserves everyone's respect regardless of whether or not they agree with anything he had to say.

I think where many people go wrong is when they A. expect Christians -or any other people of faith- to be perfect. We're not, no one is and B. expect empirical data; neither side has empirical data. I can't prove that there is a God. No person knows that. If we 'knew' then faith wouldn't be necessary. A belief, a hope, in things not seen is essential to believing in God.
Also, far too many Christians love telling others what God likes, who He hates, and what He is or is not. This is arrogance. I try to live life based on the principles of the 4 main gospels. I consider myself Christian, but I've also found that most of my atheist friends understand the heart of God better than most believers. Be good to others. And as I state before, only the things you can't control are the things you take risks on or that you gamble with. I can say right now that my risk of dying of diarrehea is 0 (knowing my body first). I therefore am not always gambling my life. The reason is healthcare.

In terms of the whole religion v atheism debate in which Mr Hitchens is embroiled in, the main tenet of the whole argument which concerns me is that undeniable truth that theists and bigots who seem much more concerned and sometimes irritated by the notion that some people simply do not believe and seem to believe it is their divine right to impose their beliefs on other. Whereas athiests seem quite content with both aspects as long as they can live they life without outside religious influence

Speaking as a christian, I always had the utmost respect and admiration for Hitchens, and his criticism of religious fundamentalism is entirely justified.
Athiests are welcome to their beliefs, and Hitchens never had any quarrel with those religious individuals who didn't feel they had to preach to others or try to 'save' them.

You can have charities without having to lie to people about the man in the sky. Look at the Salvation Army for example, that denies help for homosexuals. I think where many people go wrong is when they A. expect Christians -or any other people of faith- to be perfect. We're not, no one is and B. expect empirical data; neither side has empirical data. I can't prove that there is a God. No person knows that. If we 'knew' then faith wouldn't be necessary. A belief, a hope, in things not seen is essential to believing in God.

problem. Too many Christians basically hate themselves for not being perfect. They are some of the most unwilling to forgive themselves and often walk around doing nothing but berating themselves for not being perfect or for not being what they think God wants them to be. I consider myself Christian, but I've also found that most of my atheist friends understand the heart of God better than most believers. Be good to others. Treat others with respect, how you'd like to be treated. Serve them, love them regardless of their 'sins', shortcomings. People matter. It's altogether inspiring and frustrating to see the most Christ-like behavior coming from atheist friends than I what see coming from those friends of mine who believe Christ to be their Savior.

Heaven is a mind as brilliant and witty as Christopher Hitchens, whether the words he has written or the words he has spoken. Heaven is an orator as great as Hitchens to listen to on audio. The cancer may affect his voicebox - that is a CRIME - but it cannot take away his VOICE. I am of only average IQ, but I grow when I listen/read/hear/know of Mr. Hitchens. Peace.

@SimoneDeEngles You sound intelligent to me. This may be tired old ground to tread, but I don't think a Mensa test or what education you could afford is the be all and end all. I consider intelligence to be the ability of the mind to comprehend abstract data, be it along the lines of logic and reason, or this newfangled EQ that seems to put a name to something we have known all along. Don't sell yourself, down - you have the tools, to expand your minds horizons.

w/ regard to the Horace Mann quote "until you've done something for humanity...", Christopher Hitchens has ALREADY done so much for humanity that he need not concern himself w/ worry that he has not done enough.
He has taught me so much and I don't even care to think about this world w/o him.
