Go look at a Swedish snowblower instead, like the "Snöslunga 77", a Scania SBA111 with a 220 bhp engine for the movement, and a Scania DS14 V8 @350bhp for the snow-blowing. :D
I don't think they sold too many of these machines. They had them at the Lowes here in Syracuse, NY last season but not this season. For that much money, I would rather go buy a garden tractor with a snowblower attachment or, even, an old truck with a plow.
@STBRetired1 They didn't sell many this year either Today 01-24-12 was the first real snow we've had all year and by Fri 01-27-12 it will be gone in the valley
Auger gear box looks tiny and fragile for the size of the machine. I've seen it in person. It's big, but built cheaply. I would stay away from it, don't get fooled by the monster looks.
I have disagree with you folks my 3090xp troybilt took the abuse of the 23+inches we had here in chicago in febuary workin for 10 1/2 hours straight with out a gear box problem the only problem that did happen was the chute control pin fell out and my dealer fixed it that day but since then i have not had a major problem and it ate five foot drifts for lunch
Garbage. The Troy-Bilt brand name is completely diluted. Plastic chute on a $2400 blower! It's just for show. Little ice and the plastic teeth turning the chute will shear right off. Engines suck too. There are some OK Chinese engines, this is not one of them. This is MTD with Troy-Bilt badge.
I own a Troy-Bilt pressure washer but it has a Honda engine. The pump is so-so but it's OK, the Honda engine makes it.
I work at a repair shop in on LI NY and these things are just to sell. The engine is complete trash. The needle and seat valve always corrodes(We stock 50 kits and they always go) and the auger gear box is the same as the 24" units. You's be better off buying a Toro powermax or a Snapper 30". Atleast the Snapper is an All american product. Both the big Snappers and Toros use grade 5 carbon steel bolts on the axle, not butter bolts
@chevy668 I wish I could make a video showing everyone how many of these Troy Bilts and Craftsman snow throwers we have in for repairs. They are in the shop because of broken gear boxes and bent up auger housings lol. I have never had to bend back so many auger's and auger housing before. The older models with Tecumseh engines were still junk but they were no were near as crappy as the new models with the chinese engines.
If you look closely at this machine, the auger gear box looks too small and a plastic discharge shoot on a $2300.00 snowblower!! Not what I'd expect on such a big unit. Better off going to an Ariens Dealer and buy one there. Lowes and Home Depot Snowblowers are not as good as the ones you get from the dealerships.
Looks all impressive, but it's got a garbage Chinese LCT engine on it....that engine will be dead in 5 years, due to inferior quality components, then you can put a big B&S or Tecumseh on it, and have a real snowblower.
MTD holds most (if not all) of the patents for snowblowers and most lawn tractors and mowers in the U.S. and are purchasing more each day. No matter what you get, look for better sheet metal, best engine and how well they are built. If not maintained properly they will fail and fail quickly no matter what "brand" it is.
Honda or Toro for blowers all the way! WAYYYY more reliable and better in performance than this huge clunky scrap metal pieces of shit!
What good is a huge piece of shit like this? Maybe for long driveways? And even then I'll bet money it won't throw throw farther than 10 feet. You'll be needing to double back with this hunk o' junk.
Bet if comes with a toolbox and road hazard lights.
if that machine was built to last it would easily cost twice that much, it is a 30" machine with a 45" auger on the front and the motor is extremely underpowered, over time the struts that stabilize the augerhousing bend and then break, it's fine for clearing 4" of snow quickly but is not intended for even serious homeowner use
I say good for you if money is not much of an issue...how ever you guys out there buying any new "toys...how many times did you later catch yourself thinking the smaller unit would have just done fine?...right...thought so...power to weight ratio is what it boils down to in this case. Also for non professional use...a walk behind should be the width of a 3ft sidewalk and have about 12 to 17 hp. Need a supplier and otherwise don't buy "her".
I own one. Don't buy one of these Troy Bilts. It eats auger belts, the 13 hp motor is too weak and it weighs over 700 lbs. It's huge and impressive to look at, but spend your money on a smaller 32" Ariens or John Deere.
I have an ariens 524 and its wonderful it has a tecumseh engine and it has to high of compression. Any help on lowering the compression would be great.
@GarrettJDB, untrue. That's just what people like to believe. I have one with similar engine and it works great. Also it's not really MTD. I forgot where I read it, but it's a pretty good company that makes them.
@onetwonine2 I dont want to argue but yes its built by MTD Google it. I'm in the small engine repair business and i can tell by the design of the chute and auger. I have worked on many of these because of the Chinese engines having float and needle problems. Also the belts throwing off. MTD should of stook to the Double belt designed auger.
Too heavy, not worth it. Stick with something smaller. People think they need something this big and usually they dont. No city person would ever need something that big.
Does anybody know if this maching is reliable? I currently have a 26" Ariens and the Ariens is reliable, just takes too many passes to do the driveway.
your kidding me right? MTD now owns troy built. mtd makes some of biggest piece of shit products ever built. for less than half the price of that piece of junk you can get yourself a older garden tractor from the 70's or 80's that will perform much better and last allot longer. i have both a 71 IH cub cadet 147 and a 1971 jd 112. my jd 112 has a 37a blower and my cub cadet has a qa42. the cub cadet garden tractor will eat this piece of crap and spit it back out
@kd7fqd Technically it made by MTD. MTD owns Troy-Bilt,Cub Cadet,White,Bolens, and Yard Machine. So what you see is the same crap you find at Wal-Mart. But if you shed it after every use and do maintainance it should last a long while. It is NOT for commercial use and would fail fast if used that way.
Its not made by troy-bilt, its made by MTD products smartass, and Ariens is a much better unit. This is a snowblower with dual wheels, all you need is a set of tire chains. Plus the Ariens have a 5 year guarantee on the auger gearbox! MTD is NO GOOD!
@needlenitz18 I have an MTD E640F bought it at Costco in 1995 about $600.00, it's a 26" unit with an 8hp Tecumseh Snow King Engine, The machine has been a workhorse for 16 years now with some routine maintenance (yearly oil changes, new belts when needed, friction rubber etc.). Unless there quality has diminished significantly I would go out of my way to buy another one.
@BourneAccident there is no troy built any more. there all made by mtd. the engine is way under powered for the size, and it is cheaply made compared to your ariens. your ariens will out live this thing for many years after its crushed and shipped back to china.
@colbycous01, ariens is over rated. Also ariens is also using some of the same engines this year on some models.. Look it up. I don't know about MTD, but the a thrower doesn't have to be built by ariens to be good. Actually their past prices is what makes them junk in a way. It's like paying the repair bills ahead of time. Your wide sweeping assumptions and attitude are over exaggerated. As much as we all hate stuff made in china, they make some good stuff.
@BourneAccident no it is a piece of shit stay with areins they have bigger ones and troy built is sold to some cjina company and it is a piece of shit that compred to ariens if it braks you might have to wit two months for parts
