the anime itself is great, it is deeply phisophical, complex. Somehow i get also the impression that it is hermetical, as if it was not meant to be completely understood. Art (if we call say that an anime can be considered art) is not really meant to be understood and put into comprehensive words.

I know exactly what you mean. What annoys me even more is when the chosen song has absolutely nothing to do with the programme, or game supposedly being showcased. Mad World fits in perfectly with Lain, but what the hell does Linkin Park's "Numb" have to do with, say, a Pokemon battle?!

But no doubt said video would get 5 star ratings off anyone that likes the song, without actually questioning what it adds to the video other than some backing noise.

yeah NGE is like the father of pyschological animes, along with GITS and Cowboy Bebop; but let's not forget Akira. That's THE Grandfather of this kinda stuff. Now we have Elfen Lied (half akira and NGE), an anime that reminds me of each of those above listed. It's like the Neizche of anime. I highly consider having these specific animes viewed in Philosiphy class.

Agreed, I have also watched NGE. I found SEL impossible to swallow. I started denying all things, philosophies, religions, takes on life, etc. I turned into a critic. I see everybody's weaknesses, and they've started to bug me. I've been trying to find the "real" reality. I haven't been able to let it go. It's been about 2 months since I watched it. I cannot cry anymore, no matter what kind of emotional turmoil I go through.

Now maybe it's because I saw Donnie Darko long before I ever saw Lain, but I've drawn some interesting parallels between Lain and Donnie Darko. The whole deus ex machina theme, the way lain uses 'time travel', And there even seems to be insurance traps for Lain, which lead her to make her final choices, for the good of everyone..

Anyone else see these parallels?

this video and song are well matched. the show is very thought provoking but I wonder why so many have a strong emotion for the character lain. Why do folks love lain? She's lonely at the start and uncertain of herself then in the middle she does a few questionable things she ends up.... (don't want to reveal the end). What is there to love about this character? Does she ever connect with anyone besides Alice who feels sorry for her?

Okay i see what you admire about Lain. I didn't think her father loved her. He was as stiff and cold as her mother only he interacted more with her. I think he knew who Lain was and admired the truth about who or what she really was. Even when he says he loved her was it really him who said it or Lain's projected wish that he said it? He doesn't say this in the "real" world but in the world where she is most powerful.

Hey Shika maru, Of course lonely, uncertain people deserve love, we all do. it's just that loneliness doesn't attract, Confidence does Uncertainty only attracts psychopaths. Lain lacks emotions and unresponsive. Most characters that are loved are more dynamic. It's difficult to have a connection with an unresponsive entity. It's like having a rock as one's best friend. I enjoy the nihilism introduced in Lain's story but i suspect she mirrors alot of her admirers and that gives me pause...

its about a girl who never goes on the wired wich is similar to the internet. one day when some classmates invite her to a club they say she was there the day before but was acting the opposite. finally Lain (who is the girl they invited) goes onto the wired and finds out that her name was allways mentioned. As the story unravels more and more one question comes to mind. "who is Lain?"
