When I worked at the local Wendy's back in 2008, they used the same machines as that one, however newer (circa 2001 I believe), and they ran Windows XP, I know that for a fact, because frequently, the cash registers would freeze and have to reboot.
kzdavis1000: Yes, "NewPOS" SUCKS!! At least fix the damn "Make Meal" button, jjjeeeeeezzzzzz. Oh and watch the freakin "Quick Amounts" at the top, if you bump one by mistake and then take a credit card, your drawer will be short whatever that amount was. Its their new crappy Quick Tender backed with "Split Payment" getting in the way. PCPOS makes you press "Amount Tendered" after the "Quick Amount" button to CONFIRM thats what you want. Smarter! Happened once while recalling a DT Order. Ugh.
And my customer display does work. I'm more interested in using this terminal as a Touch Screen game machine (like an oversized Android), etc. I found a x86 built copy of Android and may actually attempt to install it on this register. I know the touch screen works well (when calibrated correctly), I've taken orders on this machine for about 8 years now. Oh and the register does cache the pricing. It doesn't ring up because its a DT-OT without a CCU. "Change Keystation" in MGR Menu to FC.
Anyhow, just clearing some questions for you about McDonald's PCPOS Software. I just popped up here to see about the model number or maybe someone who has found windows drivers for this workstation. For some reason the label on the bottom of both registers is scratched up and I couldn't read it. FYI, you should be able to access the "Customer Display" via Com 3 as long as the dip switches aren't redirecting it to the bottom port. I haven't accessed it directly, but thats what the config says
The CCU Software loaded onto Register 1 is there in the event of an emergency when the real CCU Computer crashes (which btw is a P4 computer (yes I have the CCU)). Pressing the "CE" button next to the numbers will reveil a secret set of options, including Manager Functions. However, without a user number/password, your not going to get far. I can search the data files for you, as I DO know the manager codes for the register I have.
Drive-Thru operation COMPLETELY depends on the CCU being in operation. In Drive-Thru mode orders are tossed between terminals for order taking and Cashier and those orders are handled through the CCU. I brought up the CCU at my house in order to test the units, however, the backup CCU software is ONLY available on Keystation 1, and while Keystation 1 is acting as the CCU, it can't be used as a register. The alternative is running the CCU on a dedicated machine like McDonalds does.
Okay, there is a few flaws with your video... #1> this Keystation is assigned as a Drive-Thru "Order Taker" station 12... It will only operate as a Front Counter Machine in Offline mode which is accessible from the Manager Screen. Also "S CHOC" means Small Chocolate Shake. I've worked McDonalds for 10 years and have 2 of these terminals sitting around my house. The back display doesn't display anything because the unit is in "Drive-thru" mode. It must be switched to Front Counter Mode.
Umm there's no way he could show you how to use it, because it's not hooked up so you won't be able to get anywhere. I work there, that's my favorite POS. I hate the new one
@bbishoppcm any chance you could upload a video of you getting this POS machine to be able to operate using a Windows OS? It would be cool to see. I like those POS machines with the touch screen. I am a self confessed technology junkie lol.
The S choc stands for small chocolate shake. I only know that cause Ive been doing it for Ten years and Ive gone through three different point of sale systems. :D
@joshy629 wow in ten years you have used three different POS systems? Sure goes to show how technology really updates quicky these days. Do you know what computer brand you use now at McDonalds replaced this Panasonic POS that is shown in the video? I am just a curious tech enthusiast.
@Tubetheweb Yes right now our company is using what is called or know as MP6 we call it new POS or new point of sale system which what it is. Instead of it being words like you see on this register in the video is shows the picture of all the items on the menu so it looks like the menu is pretty much on the computer screen. :D
Have you pushed the CE button and tried to enter a manager's code? If you can get into system management, do change keystation and set it to front counter. It should then allow you to take orders, but will give out error messages.
This would make a nice kitchen decoration. When you have guests over and they want something to eat, goto the POS computer, and pretend to ring them up!
@bbishoppcm ha well I guess that's a reason not to grab any. ;) We use them at work so I'm a little familiar with them. I think the ones you describe we don't use anymore, we have the white and silver ones that stand up.
MS-DOS 6.x doesn't recognize anything higher than 64 MB of RAM, so your upgrade didn't change anything unless you install different software on it.
I remember the old cash registers at McDonalds with the orange neon 7-segment displays, so the ones not in use would say "CLOSEd".
In some areas you can find Burger Kings that still have the cashier call out the orders to the kitchen over a microphone. I think McD's is more strict about requiring everyone to use the latest system.
The rj 45 port is a com port to drive the serial printer also know as a receipt printer. The bottom slot is for a MSR reader. The reset is on the bottom is a hard reset button if it gets locked up, The diag dir runs all the tests to find out if anything is wrong with it. It also lets you calibrate the touch screen. and test front
pannell in the I worked for NCR for 9.5 years until becoming totlay disabled in 2004. I had to work on those all the time I had 4 MCdonalds in my area to service.
I used to work at Shell, serving customers with one of those touch-screen things. I hated it. The hard screen really did my fingers in after a while and my wrist ached. It was running Windows 98, an OS not suited to a touch-screen. I often had to close the station down because the stupid thing would freeze up.
@hmerrett You are right; this is covered in the service manual. The third com port can be switched from the customer display connector to the external connector via dip switch setting.
It's very interesting that the machine uses a Pentium II, but only runs DOS, this means the USB ports cannot be used, because as far as I know there aren't DOS drivers for USB controllers. That hard disk appears to be rather noisey. I've not heard of the CR2045 batteries before, I've heard of CR2016, 2025 and 2032 which most computer motherboards use. I don't know if McDonald's in Australia use/used these same machines or not.
@Zagroseckt The "replaceable overlay" is exactly that; there is a thin sheet of plastic that protects the delicate touch screen membrane. This was a design feature that saves the cost of an entire display as a result of employee vandalism/wear and tear. The drive definitely sounds like it's going to grenade any time soon.
I'm so glad we use NewPOS
