Frusciante isnt big on blues so how could he? He isnt close to Derek or John. Speed doesnt do much for showing talent anymore. If you watch, hes kinda confused on what to do.
john f. got that soul....maybe the 2 other guitarist are more technical in their approach to playing but as for the playing style...the 3 are incomparable....they cover different spheres as much as their guitar playin is concern....but for my personal taste....i'd go for frusciante....coz he's funky........

I have alot of respect for these musicians. They all have alot of talent. I probably listen to Frusciante' the most, though, i think that Derek did the best job here. Trucks and Frusciante' are very talented and kind. Mayer is talented but he's really full of himself and it makes me enjoy him less.
John Mayer is a great standard blues player, and has wonderful technique. Trucks has the best sound, and has such a beautiful tone. Mayer hit it on the head when he said it sounds like a chick from the 60s belting it out. He is incredible with the slide (and pretty damn good w/o it as well if you have listened to him). But my favorite is Frusciante, who, imo, is the most creative, best rhythm, and doesn't settle for anything standard. He is extremely versitile and makes beautiful music.
But come on, there is no BEST guitarist here. First off, different people have differnet standards of "best" which automatically takes away the option of appointing just one guitarist as the "best". I think they are all standout at different things, so its whatever suits your kind of music. Depending on my mood I listen to all three.
As for me personally (like I said earlier) Frusciante has the biggest influence on me because when you study him, you don't have to learn certain kinds of music from different players (you should though) because his style (specially live improvisation, which is where he is at his best) incorporates it all, from rhythm, to lead, to phrasing and effects (which are a huge strength for Frusciante). From Funk, to Blues, to rock, to acoustic, to experimental, to whatever... That is what I think.
John frusciante shouldn't be classified with these guitarists. He is a prodigy at the guitar, and a musical savant . People are most definently intitled to their opinions and i guess you can call me ignorant or close minded when it comes to watching the other guitarist play their different styles. But they just don't compare to him. i don't care what you say of their technical abilities. You will never see another John frusciante.
john mayer is a phoenominal player all around, john frusciante is probably one of the best rhythm players to pick up a strat, and Ive simply never heard anyone rock the slide guitar like derek trucks. all of these guys are amazing in their own respects!
Good players, all three, and I like their styles (Trucks is my fave, incredible live) and the other two are great as well. Don't want to offend anyone here but does anyone else think that Mayer was kind of hogging this shoot? He seems to be the only one soloing for the whole thing until Trucks busts out some beautiful slide playing.

so,i watched this video,and i looked at the "guitar gods" list of the rolling stone. seriously, exept for adam jones of tool and tom morello,i cant find any guiatrist on this list who are amazing. no real inovation,no good riffs and not great technial abillities. where on this list are peolpe like john petrucci,mike romeo, rusty cooley, buckethead, johny page, steve vai,paul gilbert, joe satriani, gus g. or dimebag. those are guitar gods.

GermanJohnFru is right actually...I have a few of his solo albums and they show no signs of funk or rock. Mostly experimental and acoustic and that ill work..Better than trucks in my opinion though.
Totally agree with Gitterplaya, blues isn't John's cup of tea, he's a funk/rock guitarist.Personally I prefer Frusciante's style of playing, but Mayer and Trucks are still way up on the scale.:)

I agree in a less condescending way. The blues is old...sorry to say because I love it so much but there's no progression in blues. It did what it had to say. And it's funny because John Frusciante is a lot older (7-9 years) and has done more for music than the other two put together and has more progressive ideas than both of them put together.
yea trucks is a great guitar player. i've been to some of his concerts as well. the only problem with him is that he is too stiff when he plays! it would be much more exciting if he put a little emotion into it

If you don't believe me the Covered in Rain solo is amazing. Mayer really has a presense, he is great, but Trucks and Frusciante are really from out of this world. Mayer's Music to me is one of the best though, his new stuff.
I've never been a Mayer fan. Since this article came out I've been listening a lot to his recorded music as well as tons of live stuff. He does perform well but he doesn't have an individual sound. He sounds more like a modern day SRV than John Mayer the individual. His tone, his licks, his everything belongs to someone else.

Mayer is a cross of Dave Matthews and SRV. His licks, tone, everything has been done before, he isn't pushing it to any limit. He is a hell of a player, mixing in some pop here and there.

yea, its true that i haven't seen people combine his pop and blues and his jazz. separately they have all been done before, but i can't quite put a finger on anyone who has combined them.
It is just when i listen to him it sounds generic, and very predictable in my eyes, but it is just an opinion. Again, i find Mayer to be as good of a guitarist technically as anyone, its just personal preference.
My 2 Favorite of this era (so not counting Vai, Beck, Clapton, SRV) would be Froosh and Trucks. I enjoy listening to 'em, and i haven't heard it before. Trucks has a chance to be the best slide guitarist ever, he is workin' toward that.
But like i said, its personal preference, if someone thinks mayer is the best goin', who am i to say he isn't? ya know?

yea i agree....my only problem with trucks is that he is very repetative when it comes to solos...they all sound the same to me. i also cant really tell him apart from duane allman when i hear him. i also cant stand how stiff he is when he plays. he is definately a great player, one of the best of today, but in my opinion is slightly unoriginal and sort of boring to watch.
Frusciante is my favorite of the three. And while i think Trucks is a better guitarist by a little, i find Mayer to be a better overall musician. His music is awesome, and he has soo much time ahead of him, unless he tragically dies, he is definitely on his way to legendary status. He is just beginning to show what he can do, in my opinion.

Mayer is definitely one of my favorite to listen to. Frusciante is my idol though, i don't know what it is about him. Maybe his life story and what he overcame, and how happy he is, and absolutely killin' it on stage. He just has somethin' about him.

yea i understand what you are saying. they both get into it, and it makes every1 else get into it. when they get into their zone, its just incredible. they put so much emotion into it, that when ur listening to it u can feel happy and pissed off all at the same time. even just a few notes. music isnt about shredding up and down the fret board as fast as you can, its about feeling the music.
100% agree. If the guitarist can't feel it, and doesn't put passion and emotion into his/her playing, then i can't feel their music either.
Froosh and Mayer both do that, and that is why i like listening to them. They show how much they love what they do, and their playing reflects that. It is hard to explain what i mean when i say "emotion in their playing" but if you've listened to Frusciante you will probably get it. Mayer is a lot like Froosh also. can't really go wrong with either.

Stop comparing apples and pears. Frusciante is a funk/rock guitarist who wrote killer riffs and licks and lots of innovating material. Mayer is equally brilliant at blues. His songwriting is amazing and his technique and timing is spot on. Trucks is great at slide guitar and fast pentatonics.

Trucks and Mayer can play their show's on lawnchairs..but Fru live is like a wild beast on stage has the most energy and soul onstage of the three for Damb Sure!
The fact that Derek Trucks can play slide that beautifully and fast just amazes me. I'm not saying that John Mayer and John Frusciante are bad at guitar, they are both great. Frusciante is able to write great songs, I love the RHCP, but his leads just seem like he is playing the pentatonic scale as fast as he can with tons of effects. I think I have made my point.
Duane used it for the most part with a bluesy sound. I would like to see John Frusciante pick try to play slide. You'll notice that the slide goes all the way across the neck, so when you go to play one note and slide it up or down, all of the other strings are going to make a lot of noise, you wont just hear the single note you wanted to play. You have to mute all of the other strings.
john played slide with his broken pinky on his scar tissue solo's. again do your research, your posts are all gibberish, goin no where. im sorry you had to write an essay to prove our point, when me and some other people proved it a while back. and dont get angry, its everyones OPINION who is better or whatever, depends what style ya like.

I love Duane Allman, but I have to say that Derek is utilizes the slide more then Duane did.

It's just that not everyone likes jazz. Where as John Mayer and John Frusciante stick to the pentatonic scale and added blue notes, Derek Trucks uses the scales that you actually have to understand music theory to learn, such as the Jazz Minor scale, the Melodic minor scale, the Major scale and its 7 modes, on top of that he uses tonal notes that differ from whatever chord is being played. That all sounds easy enough to learn, right? That's what separates Derek from the other two.

Maybe the video of him playing statesboro blues with the ABB when he was 13 years old is blues. But he plays all kinds of music. His music with the ABB is going to sound somewhat bluesier than not because thats just how the ABB sounds. His work with the Derek Trucks Band is amazing. They lean more towards soul, jam, jazz, and all of those great styles. Coming from a musicians standpoint Derek Trucks is by far the best musician.

so,i watched this video,and i looked at the "guitar gods" list of the rolling stone. seriously, exept for adam jones of tool and tom morello,i cant find any guiatrist on this list who are amazing. no real inovation,no good riffs and not great technial abillities. where on this list are peolpe like john petrucci,mike romeo, rusty cooley, buckethead, johny page, steve vai,paul gilbert, joe satriani, gus g. or dimebag. those are guitar gods.

but john mayer is something else. people like to marginalize him and place hiim in the "pop/rock genre" and they completely avoid the fact that he can totally shred the guitar!
some people treat the guitar like a lady and caress it, some allow the guitar to become part of their anatomy,

I just feel he lacks originality to compete as a great guitarist. there is no question about his skill, and what he can/and has done with his guitar.
If you don't believe me the Covered in Rain solo is amazing. Mayer really has a presense, he is great, but Trucks and Frusciante are really from out of this world. Mayer's Music to me is one of the best though, his new stuff.

I've never been a Mayer fan. Since this article came out I've been listening a lot to his recorded music as well as tons of live stuff. He does perform well but he doesn't have an individual sound. He sounds more like a modern day SRV than John Mayer the individual. His tone, his licks, his everything belongs to someone else.

i think the problem isn't me not listening to him, but you not having listened to enough of other blues artists.
Mayer is a cross of Dave Matthews and SRV. His licks, tone, everything has been done before, he isn't pushing it to any limit. He is a hell of a player, mixing in some pop here and there.
I would never say Mayer isn't an excellent guitarist, but to me, he isn't a guitar god by any stretch of the word.

yea, its true that i haven't seen people combine his pop and blues and his jazz. separately they have all been done before, but i can't quite put a finger on anyone who has combined them.
It is just when i listen to him it sounds generic, and very predictable in my eyes, but it is just an opinion. Again, i find Mayer to be as good of a guitarist technically as anyone, its just personal preference.

My 2 Favorite of this era (so not counting Vai, Beck, Clapton, SRV) would be Froosh and Trucks. I enjoy listening to 'em, and i haven't heard it before. Trucks has a chance to be the best slide guitarist ever, he is workin' toward that.
But like i said, its personal preference, if someone thinks mayer is the best goin', who am i to say he isn't? ya know?
Anyone who is bringin' the guitar back into mainstream music is alright with me.

yea i agree....my only problem with trucks is that he is very repetative when it comes to solos...they all sound the same to me. i also cant really tell him apart from duane allman when i hear him. i also cant stand how stiff he is when he plays. he is definately a great player, one of the best of today, but in my opinion is slightly unoriginal and sort of boring to watch.

Frusciante is my favorite of the three. And while i think Trucks is a better guitarist by a little, i find Mayer to be a better overall musician. His music is awesome, and he has soo much time ahead of him, unless he tragically dies, he is definitely on his way to legendary status. He is just beginning to show what he can do, in my opinion.

Mayer is definitely one of my favorite to listen to. Frusciante is my idol though, i don't know what it is about him. Maybe his life story and what he overcame, and how happy he is, and absolutely killin' it on stage. He just has somethin' about him.
To me, Froosh and Hendrix were and are the only 2 artists, that just seem like the purest forms of music. Its hard to explain though.

yea i understand what you are saying. they both get into it, and it makes every1 else get into it. when they get into their zone, its just incredible. they put so much emotion into it, that when ur listening to it u can feel happy and pissed off all at the same time. even just a few notes. music isnt about shredding up and down the fret board as fast as you can, its about feeling the music.

100% agree. If the guitarist can't feel it, and doesn't put passion and emotion into his/her playing, then i can't feel their music either.
Froosh and Mayer both do that, and that is why i like listening to them. They show how much they love what they do, and their playing reflects that. It is hard to explain what i mean when i say "emotion in their playing" but if you've listened to Frusciante you will probably get it. Mayer is a lot like Froosh also. can't really go wrong with either.

Stop comparing apples and pears. Frusciante is a funk/rock guitarist who wrote killer riffs and licks and lots of innovating material. Mayer is equally brilliant at blues. His songwriting is amazing and his technique and timing is spot on. Trucks is great at slide guitar and fast pentatonics.
There is no such thing as 'the best guitarplayer' because they do different things. Can't you just like them all?

The fact that Derek Trucks can play slide that beautifully and fast just amazes me. I'm not saying that John Mayer and John Frusciante are bad at guitar, they are both great. Frusciante is able to write great songs, I love the RHCP, but his leads just seem like he is playing the pentatonic scale as fast as he can with tons of effects. I think I have made my point.

Duane used it for the most part with a bluesy sound. I would like to see John Frusciante pick try to play slide. You'll notice that the slide goes all the way across the neck, so when you go to play one note and slide it up or down, all of the other strings are going to make a lot of noise, you wont just hear the single note you wanted to play. You have to mute all of the other strings.

. Notice that I didn't even mention the fact that he plays slide. All of you people that think that playing slide guitar is the same as playing regular guitar with a slide on your finger are completely out of your mind. Slide guitar is a lot harder than it looks. When someone said that there are a lot of people that play slide and that Derek is not the best slide player ever, they were wrong. I love Duane Allman, but I have to say that Derek is utilizes the slide more then Duane did.

It's just that not everyone likes jazz. Where as John Mayer and John Frusciante stick to the pentatonic scale and added blue notes, Derek Trucks uses the scales that you actually have to understand music theory to learn, such as the Jazz Minor scale, the Melodic minor scale, the Major scale and its 7 modes, on top of that he uses tonal notes that differ from whatever chord is being played. That all sounds easy enough to learn, right? That's what separates Derek from the other two.

Maybe the video of him playing statesboro blues with the ABB when he was 13 years old is blues. But he plays all kinds of music. His music with the ABB is going to sound somewhat bluesier than not because thats just how the ABB sounds. His work with the Derek Trucks Band is amazing. They lean more towards soul, jam, jazz, and all of those great styles. Coming from a musicians standpoint Derek Trucks is by far the best musician.

it doesn't matter at all who hes played with when your trying to prove to people that hes as good as you think he is. you can only prove that with specific examples from what he has played. thats just a lost cause anyway.
