Instrumental tuition should be proactive. I teach every day, if I did this I'd be out of business in a week. Information is the key to good instrumental teaching.
Great if you want to play the notes you are shown, but fundamentally what are they? Some scale theory would be great. I play uke aswell as guitar, which is my primary instrument. I now understand the uke fretboard/technique due to a great online tutor. Regards.
oh c'mon that was a simple little instruction, well-paced, and taught me tons in 2 mins. if u dont get it u obviously are not ready for it - its all about creating a rhythm and basing notes on it.
@eshaype Yes if you've ever played the mandolin before, it is after all a four course instrument, fingering is different even from a Uke or Banjo. Regards.
Thanks for the clear lesson great for a beginner. I'm appalled by the snide comments- just nasty folk with nothing better to do. Ignore the low life my friend and keep teaching.Beginner
I'm just liking this because I just made a new friend who plays the mandolin and I find it extremely bizarre that mandolin themed things keep popping up in my life...it's kind of freaking me out a little.
I think he is a good instructor. At least his not going like "then you, uh, put your, uh, finger here, uh, and you ahve to land the E, and, uhm" .... thats a plus in my book.
Are you related to Conor from Bright Eyes? I think Bright Eyes could use some Mandolin. Anyway, thanks for the video. You are very easy to understand, though. You don't need those words there.
How do you get rid of the writing - it completely obscures the instrument / hands and makes it impossible to follow! This is an example of a good lesson spoiled.
For some reason, I find it funny that there are subtitles to this video. If you can't hear, why the hell are you trying to learn to play a musical instrument?
@DodgeCompany Man I don't think I've seen writing a bad as your as intentional as it might be since well grade 1 Kindergarden and no doubt the mandolin sound really cool
RyuAthlete shut your mouth atleast he has talent, I hate people like you that get on here to talk crap to people that actually have the courage to put a video up of something they have done. where's your talent A-hole
@FMHammyJ fromRyuAthletes page...." I made this youtube account because there are a lot of talented people that post their work on youtube so don't expect any videos from me I'm just an observing kinda guy.
Thanks for teaching. I don't have a mandolin yet but I have played and taken guitar lessons for a few years and I wanted to suggest to the teacher that he gives a sample of what 2 Step Shuffle is before teaching the technique so that it presents a goal to be reached. Another option is to display tablature so people are certain of where the fingers should be placed. Thanks for posting the video.
i recently just got an epiphone mandolin at it was under $200. i like it a lot and it doesn't sound too shabby for the price. perfect for a beginner like myself.
I have a VIVI model v182 (i think. the maker had sloppy handwriting) mandolin that my grandpa gave me. its been sitting around for 5 years and i pulled it out and it still sounds great. Thanks for the vids!
I thought that it was a new way to play a new style fiddle. Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, soooooo, that's a mandolin.......welllllll, gir-r-done!!!!!!
ITS NOT A FUCKING GUITAR, AND IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A LES PAUL. For gods sake, I understand how you could mistake it for a split second. But if you think about it after a while you realize that its too small to be a guitar and it sounds nothing like a guitar. A mandolin also has 8 strings where a guitar has 6 at the most. I dont know much about either but even I could figure that out.
Not trying to criticize your logic because you are quite correct in saying that a mandolin and a guitar differ greatly, but guitars can in fact have more than 6 strings. There are 7, 8, and 12 string guitars. The 12 string guitars string set up is similar to that of a mandolin because there are 12 strings that are in 6 courses, while a mandolin has 8 strings in 4 courses.
Why is expert village...not so expert and professional most of the time. Most of the videos I've seen, the sound is either bad or the person doing whatever they are trying to show you is bad.
I fully agree; it's unbelievable how bad everybody involved with ExpertVillage really is. for instance; this guy looks and sounds like he's just picked up a plec for the very first time. Maybe it's all some weird scam!
Violin? What are you smoking?Only thing in common with the violin is the tuning E-A-D-G and you can only strum or pick the mandolin, you cannot play it with a bow. The violin is mostly a bowed instrument, you can fingerpick it, but cannot strum full chords.Plus they don't even sound alike.
@senorbellaco give the man a break, he's virtually right!! i mean, i play both vioin and mandolin. have done for several years, but you can tell he meant it in terms of the tuning and not the bowing!! at least he isn't one of these people who thinks it's "a nice little guitar"

I got my mandolin for under $100; it's a pretty instrument, probably not the best quality (it's a Lone Star), but I just wanted to try a mandolin out. I've played violin/fiddle for many years, so the notes are easy. I just want to learn picking technique. These videos are helpful.
I bought a $60 mandolin (Rhapsody) in the early 90's which I still have and it sounds great. I play it right now for one acoustic song in my band's set. I'm actually the drummer. I also play guitar and bass
Actually, I had been looking at that kit earlier. Its a really good price from what I can tell, but I really hate that shipping it to Canada costs over 40 dollars. That starts to get a little pricey for me. I'm considering it, though.
What do you know about them? Do you own them? Are they decent quality or are they not worth it?
I've never played either of these instruments so I don't know much about what to buy.
hey there! i just bought the rouge rm - 100a (one in kit w/ uke) and its great! u have to tune it, and i sugest an online tuner. once tuned, you can mess around with it! i hve had mine for a day and love it!

Hey everyone who wants a mandolin go to amazon and look up "Rogue" mandolins it is an amazing little mandolin and last time i checked it was only $50 so if mandolin is an experiment for you as it was for me it is a great learning mandolin. Not to mention the quality is just as good as more expencive fender mandolins ive seen. I highly recomend it.

ok yeh ive found the tuning, GDAE, but I'm confused as there are 4 pairs of strings? Do you tune both strings in each pair to the same note?
