  • Love your videos. I am learning to play the mandolin just by watching your vids. Thank u :D

  • Instrumental tuition should be proactive. I teach every day, if I did this I'd be out of business in a week. Information is the key to good instrumental teaching.

  • Great if you want to play the notes you are shown, but fundamentally what are they? Some scale theory would be great. I play uke aswell as guitar, which is my primary instrument. I now understand the uke fretboard/technique due to a great online tutor. Regards.

  • I don't know what you guys is talking about at all. It's a great lesson and expertvillage dosen't "sux"

  • oh c'mon that was a simple little instruction, well-paced, and taught me tons in 2 mins. if u dont get it u obviously are not ready for it - its all about creating a rhythm and basing notes on it.

  • @eshaype Yes if you've ever played the mandolin before, it is after all a four course instrument, fingering is different even from a Uke or Banjo. Regards.

  • he was nervous at first maybe. But then good work!

  • lol.... i have no idea what is going on in this video!

  • get off this dudes nuts. hes good

  • lol I still don't get it.

  • this is too confusing!

  • Aaah such a beautiful instrument

  • FUCK EXPERT VILLAGE

  • Thanks for the clear lesson great for a beginner. I'm appalled by the snide comments- just nasty folk with nothing better to do. Ignore the low life my friend and keep teaching.Beginner

  • to add to everything everyone else has said,he's not playing two strings (as he said), he's playing two courses, each one containing two strings

  • expertvillage is a fucking joke.

  • Can I somehow BLOCK expertvillage from showing up in my search results PERMANENTLY? They've wasted too much of my time already...

  • press six and five two do the two string shuffle

  • Idiotvillage?

  • Who gave ashton kutcher a mandolin?

  • Expertvillage does not really have experts, in my experience.

  • This sounds like an untuned chicken.

  • i cant stand listening to him.

  • @MANDOLlN No one cares about you and your dad or how much or little you two allegedly rock.

  • Wasn't this guy a fucking Eskimo in Northern Exposure?

  • strings are G D A E. each note is two strings

  • Whats the string called? Like Guitar strings is: E A D G B/H E, really want to learn all about mandolins, love the sound of a mandolin!

  • Of course it's not going to be good, he's teaching... not playing a song.

  • stalone will beat ur ass on mandolin!!!

  • sounds like when september ends by green day

  • WIOIW

  • a money taught me that song last week

  • @jimmybomb11 hahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

  • Cool.... Wish I had a Mandolin... :D

  • @furfinsandfeathers rogue mandolin , 50$ , good quality. musicians friend

  • I'm just liking this because I just made a new friend who plays the mandolin and I find it extremely bizarre that mandolin themed things keep popping up in my life...it's kind of freaking me out a little.

  • Drugs are bad mmmmkkkkk. You shouldnt do drugs mmmkk!!

  • fuck your ADS YOURUBEQ!!!!!

  • @thema6ician it's still called youtube. not yourubeq.

  • I mixed the words ''sucker'' and ''expert''. Am i the only one?

  • I think he is a good instructor. At least his not going like "then you, uh, put your, uh, finger here, uh, and you ahve to land the E, and, uhm" .... thats a plus in my book.

  • Ayl sho ya da yer olde mandouleene, weee haaaw

  • The best part is how you can see his fingers.

    Oh wait.

Are you related to Conor from Bright Eyes? I think Bright Eyes could use some Mandolin. Anyway, thanks for the video. You are very easy to understand, though. You don't need those words there.

  • How do you get rid of the writing - it completely obscures the instrument / hands and makes it impossible to follow! This is an example of a good lesson spoiled.

  • look im an asshole i have nothing better to do than to criticize people that make videos on you tube (this guy knows what he s doing) TROLL

  • For some reason, I find it funny that there are subtitles to this video. If you can't hear, why the hell are you trying to learn to play a musical instrument?

  • 0:01 to skip advertisement

  • There's no such thing as a mandolin instructor

This is not a real job

He's just trying to steal your wallet while you watch him play

  • GDAE??

  • @abhammer21 I remember the strings with the phrase G-ood D-ates A-re E-asy.

  • how is a mandolin tunned?

  • @abhammer21 yes GDAE.

  • i just press F5 and i skip the commercials, that rules

  • Expertvillage= automatically sux

  • @DodgeCompany Man I don't think I've seen writing a bad as your as intentional as it might be since well grade 1 Kindergarden and no doubt the mandolin sound really cool

  • RyuAthlete shut your mouth atleast he has talent, I hate people like you that get on here to talk crap to people that actually have the courage to put a video up of something they have done. where's your talent A-hole

  • @dustindennis I agree completely.....his momma raised him wrong.....just jealous of talent no doubt.

  • @FMHammyJ fromRyuAthletes page...." I made this youtube account because there are a lot of talented people that post their work on youtube so don't expect any videos from me I'm just an observing kinda guy.

Who knows what god has in store for me lol."

    ......I rest my case

  • eres un instructor muy joven!!!

  • beautiful!

  • There is a Epiphone Mandolin coming out, if it ain't too expensive I think i am going to get it

  • MAMA MIA ! ! ! LA NOTTE E DEBILE ,, tutte force a sempre racione,,,,,,

  • are you of relation to Conor?

  • Thanks for teaching. I don't have a mandolin yet but I have played and taken guitar lessons for a few years and I wanted to suggest to the teacher that he gives a sample of what 2 Step Shuffle is before teaching the technique so that it presents a goal to be reached. Another option is to display tablature so people are certain of where the fingers should be placed. Thanks for posting the video.

  • i will be getting one soon can you suggest a good one yet budget style ?

  • i recently just got an epiphone mandolin at it was under $200. i like it a lot and it doesn't sound too shabby for the price. perfect for a beginner like myself.

  • I have a VIVI model v182 (i think. the maker had sloppy handwriting) mandolin that my grandpa gave me. its been sitting around for 5 years and i pulled it out and it still sounds great. Thanks for the vids!

  • I had a very unique 9 string guitar made by Alvarez for several years

  • Fun technique, thank you! :) I appreciate the lessons very much.

  • That's a sweet drum set he's playing there!

    :)

  • Drumset ?!

  • Or maybe it's a Les Paul.

  • Fail subtitling. Good video though.

  • I thought that it was a new way to play a new style fiddle. Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, soooooo, that's a mandolin.......welllllll, gir-r-done!!!!!!

  • Mommy are you talking about me or someone else?

  • I just hope there's no people thinking that a cello is a fender jazzmaster...

  • this guy is either high as fuck or an idiot. possibly both.

  • ITS NOT A FUCKING GUITAR, AND IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A LES PAUL. For gods sake, I understand how you could mistake it for a split second. But if you think about it after a while you realize that its too small to be a guitar and it sounds nothing like a guitar. A mandolin also has 8 strings where a guitar has 6 at the most. I dont know much about either but even I could figure that out.

  • Not trying to criticize your logic because you are quite correct in saying that a mandolin and a guitar differ greatly, but guitars can in fact have more than 6 strings. There are 7, 8, and 12 string guitars. The 12 string guitars string set up is similar to that of a mandolin because there are 12 strings that are in 6 courses, while a mandolin has 8 strings in 4 courses.

  • his teeth doesnt move when he talks..weird man

  • what kind of guitar is that and how much does it sell for?

  • It's a mandolin dude read the title

  • oh sorry i meant mandolin.... 0.0

  • Expert village is shit no one knows how to explain anything properly. Or Everyone is stoned.

  • Why is expert village...not so expert and professional most of the time. Most of the videos I've seen, the sound is either bad or the person doing whatever they are trying to show you is bad.

  • I fully agree; it's unbelievable how bad everybody involved with ExpertVillage really is. for instance; this guy looks and sounds like he's just picked up a plec for the very first time. Maybe it's all some weird scam!

  • u are so boring

  • "This is what it might sound if you throw in some other notes"

Stoned... without a doubt... high as a kite

  • its like a violin but its fretted

  • Violin? What are you smoking?Only thing in common with the violin is the tuning E-A-D-G and you can only strum or pick the mandolin, you cannot play it with a bow. The violin is mostly a bowed instrument, you can fingerpick it, but cannot strum full chords.Plus they don't even sound alike.

  • @senorbellaco give the man a break, he's virtually right!! i mean, i play both vioin and mandolin. have done for several years, but you can tell he meant it in terms of the tuning and not the bowing!! at least he isn't one of these people who thinks it's "a nice little guitar"

  • he is damn stoned ladies n gentlemans

  • the way this guy talks reminds me so much of Elliott Smith... i love it :D

  • Cool! You just convinced me to buy a mandolin.

  • i cant tell if this guy is high in every video or is having trouble reading a script.

  • easy stuff...

  • This guy cracks me up.

  • Why are you here?

  • THIS GUY CAN PLAY CIRCLES AROUND A MANY SO CALLED gods.

  • cool technique thx :)

  • run forest

  • The song he played at the very end reminds me of Kashmir for some reason :|

  • i love Kashmir <3

  • This guy is very talented, plays 10 different instruments. Kinda cool in his own kinda way. Thanks for the lessons dude.

  • I got my mandolin for free ^^, my uncle know a guy who makes and collect instrument so he gave me one ^^, so thank you fgor posting this video im finally learning some techniques ^^

  • I like his delivery.

  • The way he talks is like taking a lesson from Forrest Gump.

  • is that the gibson one?

theres one on the gibson guitars website that cost $25,000 that looks exactly like that,

  • I got my mandolin for under $100; it's a pretty instrument, probably not the best quality (it's a Lone Star), but I just wanted to try a mandolin out. I've played violin/fiddle for many years, so the notes are easy. I just want to learn picking technique. These videos are helpful.

  • should i get a 70 dollar one to start? i play guitar and drums already

  • i would like to know the answer to this also

  • I bought a $60 mandolin (Rhapsody) in the early 90's which I still have and it sounds great. I play it right now for one acoustic song in my band's set. I'm actually the drummer. I also play guitar and bass

  • so if i have like $400 dollars could i get a nice mando or should i save

  • got my mandolin for 335$.

but its badass and its custom made!

  • if yur lookin for a cheap instrument search for rogue they're cheap but good

  • LMAO, expert village, ERRRRR!!

  • I'm on ebay right now trying to figure out if i'm going to by a used mandolin for 75 dollars

  • spend 100 @ musicians friend and get the mando/uke kit both come with gig bags

  • Actually, I had been looking at that kit earlier. Its a really good price from what I can tell, but I really hate that shipping it to Canada costs over 40 dollars. That starts to get a little pricey for me. I'm considering it, though.

What do you know about them? Do you own them? Are they decent quality or are they not worth it?

I've never played either of these instruments so I don't know much about what to buy.

  • hey there! i just bought the rouge rm - 100a (one in kit w/ uke) and its great! u have to tune it, and i sugest an online tuner. once tuned, you can mess around with it! i hve had mine for a day and love it!

  • go on musican's friend they got good deals. the cheapist i see is $50 new

  • OMG that sounds stunning. Thank you so much for this lesson.

  • Nice one

  • he has got the most boring voice I have ever heard

  • Thanks for showing me how to play the halo theme song

  • lol

  • i want to learn da mandolin soo bad !

  • ^ needs mandolin

  • motherfuckin' badass mandolin!

  • the mandolin fuckin rocks!!!

  • mike oberst from ohio? conner oberst's brother?

  • I wonder.

  • that's an Ibanez mandolin - possibly a model 524 judging from the fancy inlay work all the way down to the body.

  • An Ibanez mandolin wouldn't be expensive, would it?

  • got an old hickory on Ebay for like 40 bucks

  • fender

  • coooooooooool Mandolinnnnnnnnnn

  • a god-damned expensive one!

  • What kind of mandolin is that?

  • Seems like a Gibson to me...or a very similar copy

  • if you play bass now, then the mandolin would be easy, but also extremely difficult. I know I tried going from mandolin to bass and found it extremely hard only because the HUGE difference in neck size, string size and spacing. My hands were used to one thing, and now they had to exaggerate every movement by 20x.

  • iv been playing bass for three years (i dont play with a pick.) and im wondering if mandolin would be an easy thing to pick up, or if not is there an instrument similar to the bass thats also easy to pick up.

  • I have an Antares one I picked up in a pawn shop a few years ago. It's not so bad, but I just haven't gotten around to learning to play it yet. Hope to get to it eventually

  • what kind of mandolin is that?

    (brand & modle)

  • i agree, u don't explain things 2 well...

  • but you do not explain which notes you pick up or down, and it is not easy to see

  • it's an alternate every time

  • im gonna be buying a mandolin soon, a cheap one just to spice up my musical horizon... i play guitar a lot, but how do you read mandolin? like is there tab for it or what?

  • Yes there are tabs with 4 lines. You can use guitar pro for mandolins, too.

  • oh ok good

  • the first thing i learned was mandolin moan. look it up youtube. it sounds nice, its pretty easy (especially since you play guitar) and it has tabs in the anotations!

  • k thanks!

  • Can anyone tell me if it is an easy transition from guitar to mandolin? I would like to flavor up my music.

  • I think it was. Of course Ive been practicing like crazy on guitar for the last 3 years that Ive played it, and Im still no good. I picked up mandolin in like 3 days. :) I can already play almost every chord Ive seen, and I can tune it by ear, and have already learned several songs by ear. They guy at the music store basically told me that a mando is the top four strings of a guitar upside down, if that helps.

  • Thanks. I've been playing for 3 years also so I hope it will be as easy for me.

  • Yes I played guitar for a couple of years too and was really struggling, then I tried a mandolin and loved it. Having played guitar helped a lot

  • please dont mention that song

  • is the mandolin like a guitar

  • It has four double-strings with similar tuning as violin (G D A E)

  • ...vio....lin?

  • no its like playing the high notes only on a guitar but picking more so yes kind of like guitar but not like violin at all

  • well not the playing but it has similar tuning so a violin player can also play mandoline quite well

  • Hey everyone who wants a mandolin go to amazon and look up "Rogue" mandolins it is an amazing little mandolin and last time i checked it was only $50 so if mandolin is an experiment for you as it was for me it is a great learning mandolin. Not to mention the quality is just as good as more expencive fender mandolins ive seen. I highly recomend it.

  • those mandolins are fucking expensive, a gibson mandolin is like 10,000 bucks worth!

  • my mandolin has groups of 3 strings. im confused ;(

  • what kind of mandolin is used in the song

    "losing my religion"

  • dunno man... but thats the reason i want to learn how to play it. (sorry, i didnt answer you xD)

  • Hi, thanks a lot, but I have a question. I cant see the right hand, do you go only down or up too? Hello from Berlin!

  • ok yeh ive found the tuning, GDAE, but I'm confused as there are 4 pairs of strings? Do you tune both strings in each pair to the same note?

  • yes both strings in the set are tuned the same pitch

  • thank you:)

  • ive just inherited a mandolin, could anybody tell me what notes each string should be?
